  • Tri-County Social Service Board updated on new state and district plans

    ALlison Lindgren|Dec 3, 2018

Teresa Fetsch, Director of the Eddy, Foster and Wells Social Service Boards updated the Tri-County Social Service board at their Nov. 19 meeting. Fetsch began the update by discussing pilot projects that have begun throughout the state as part of the Social Services Redesign, a result of the legislative passage of North Dakota Senate Bill 2206. The North Dakota Legislature passed SB 2206, which relates to the transition of funding responsibility for county social services from the counties to...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Dec. 3, 2018

    ALlison Lindgren|Dec 3, 2018

Every year at this time, I am amazed at the amounts of money raised for charities during this annual season of giving. I’ll admit that I’m a bit of a strange bird when it comes to these kinds of fundraisers. Growing up, the Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy certainly fostered my interest in fundraisers. Even so, I’m a little surprised that I never clicked on the announcement my college friend makes every year about the annual RDO Caters Taters for Charity. As a longtime employee of RD...

  • County approves tax incentives for CenDak fertilizer facility

    ALlison Lindgren|Nov 26, 2018

Representatives from CenDak appeared before the commission on Tuesday, Nov. 20 for a hearing on their application for property tax incentives. CenDak is building a 60-by-100 foot structure that will house a 2,200 ton fertilizer plant with 2-16 ton blenders on the south side. The facility will be built on land near the New Rockford Municipal Airport. The commissioners approved the tax incentive for a period of five years on the building, noting that CenDak would still pay taxes on the land. The i...

This week, I share a true story with you that inspires the gift of giving in me during the holiday season. I hope it will make you smile and inspire you as we move into the holiday season. Jack woke early that Christmas Eve morning, thinking about a conversation he’d had the day before with one of his co-workers. Although he didn’t know him well, Jack knew that Manny’s family had been through a tough year. Both families had three-year-old boys and baby daughters, but Manny’s daughter had bee...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- Nov. 19, 2018

    ALlison Lindgren|Nov 19, 2018

My heart is full as we approach Thanksgiving, and this year thankfulness comes easily. As I was thinking about something to share for Thanksgiving this year, I came across a heartwarming story written by Charles Rogers. The story is a beautiful story that reminds us that, while we are sharing our holiday with family and friends, there are many people who are spending their holiday lonely and hurting. People who won’t necessarily have a Happy Thanksgiving and may even feel lonelier because of the...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Veterans Day 2018

    ALlison Lindgren|Nov 12, 2018

While researching the history of Veterans Day, I ran across this story about two World War II veterans on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website, a story about a couple who met in a Navy chow line and ended up spending the rest of their lives together. Kathy Cummins was doing her part to help with the war effort as one of the original “Rosie the Riveters.” She left home at the age of 18 and was trained in riveting and fabrication at a defense factory and worked there for two years. As...

  • New Rockford-Sheyenne ACT scores trending above state average

    ALlison Lindgren|Nov 5, 2018

North Dakota State Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler announced on Oct. 19 that North Dakota's most recent high school graduates had the fourth highest average composite scores on the ACT, a widely used college entrance exam. The rankings compared student scores in the 19 states that require all high school students to take the ACT. In that group, North Dakota students finished in the top five in ratings of students who were considered college-ready in English, reading,...

    ALlison Lindgren|Nov 5, 2018

It was a local food drive that had me shopping in my local grocery store yesterday, using my best judgement on the types of items that I should buy. I tried to be sensitive to the fact that I needed to purchase complete meals, in recognition of the fact that their own pantry may not have the items needed to prepare a boxed meal. However, I didn’t research what food pantries actually need, until after I had purchased and delivered the food items we donated. Carol Kent told the story about a w...

  • Eyes that see the good in things

    ALlison Lindgren|Oct 29, 2018

Almost two years ago, we ran a story where we talked with Joleen Thomas about her daughter Jocelyn’s death by suicide. She and her family had recently started speaking out about the mental illness issues they lived with prior to her daughter’s death.  That article concluded with this quote from Joleen, “I don’t know how far we’ll go with this or what we’ll do after this, but I do know that we are committed to keep going and keep trying to do something positive to make something good come fro...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: The big strong fireman

    Allison Lindgren|Oct 22, 2018

Teresa Risovi has been spending more time than usual at the New Rockford-Sheyenne school these days, going every two hours to help her son Lincoln. You see, shortly before his sixth birthday, Lincoln had an accident on his bike, leaving him with a bone break and postponing his sixth birthday party. His injury also started his parents, Teresa and Jeremy Risovi down the dealing with a child’s special needs. Initially, Lincoln was in a great deal of pain. Teresa said that she cried along with h...

    Allison Lindgren|Oct 15, 2018

Several years ago, after her son started ziplining, my sister-in-law dared my almost 80-year-dad to zipline on Fremont Street in Las Vegas, on the trip they were planning to be taking there together. She even told him that she’d do it if he did. If you’re not familiar with a zipline, it consists of a pulley suspended on a cable, mounted on a slope. It is designed to enable a user to attach to the pulley and be propelled by gravity to travel from the top to the bottom. Zipline tours have bec...

The registered nurses, paramedics and EMT's who were chosen for deployment to North Carolina were part of a group of medical professionals who have made themselves available to respond to large-scale emergencies through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC). EMAC is a mutual aid agreement among...

  • Eddy County Commissioners approve 2019 budget

    Allison Lindgren|Oct 8, 2018

Budget seemed to be the word of the day at the Eddy County Commission meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 2. A conference call was held with Benson, Eddy, Pierce and Ramsey county commissioners to approve the final budget of the Lake Region District Health Unit (LRDHU) for 2019. Alan McKay, LRDHU administrator, had previously appeared at each of the county commission meetings to present the budget to them separately. This meeting was solely for the four county commissions to approve the budget as he had...

How is it that the busiest people seem to get the most things done? Have you ever noticed that? I have a cousin who works a full-time job, traveling across country. She’s away from home a lot. While she’s gone, she makes the most of these trips and soaks in the places and things that she hasn’t seen before. Her Facebook posts are always interesting, with pictures of new and interesting “roads less traveled” types of places. Not long ago, she posted pictures of a mama bear with cubs just across t...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: October 1, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Oct 1, 2018

I learned a few things the other night when I took my husband to the Emergency Room again. The first thing I experienced was that familiar sense of relief, when we knew the medical professionals were now in control. The second thing I learned was that Google really isn’t all that helpful in self-diagnosis, and that it can make things much scarier than they really are. The third was that I really do need to stop trying to eavesdrop on conversations that are not intended for me, especially when I...

  • National Guard proposes Camp Grafton South expansion

    Allison Lindgren|Sep 24, 2018

Eddy County landowners filled a meeting room at the Eddy County Courthouse and spilled out into the hallway on Tuesday, Sept. 18 as they came to hear a proposal by the North Dakota National Guard (NDNG) to expand the Camp Grafton South training area located in eastern Eddy County. A letter sent to landowners living or farming close to the training area said that since Sept. 11, 2001, NDNG has transitioned from a Strategic Reserve to an Operational Reserve. Historically, the NDNG has been a...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: September 17, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Sep 17, 2018

Colorado is one of my favorite places to go. First of all, it’s my birthplace, but until six years ago, I had never been there. It had always been on my list of things to do. My parents planned a family vacation to go to Colorado and show me the place where I was born. Unfortunately, a comic scene of unfortunate events kept it from happening. I wonder if my parents still see any comedy in those events? My siblings and I were discussing that trip and compared it to one of the Chevy Chase v...

  • County Commissioners discuss emergency preparedness and ongoing maintenance

    Allison Lindgren|Sep 10, 2018

September is Disaster Preparedness Month, and Jess Earle, Emergency Manager for Foster and Eddy counties, presented information at the Eddy County Commission meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 4. First, Earle reported on her task of working the assessment figures for July 8 storm damage. She did not have final totals available, as she is waiting for some of the numbers to come in as work is completed throughout the county. In addition, she informed the commission that the Joint Powers Agreement between...

I have to tell you that I was the recipient of an act of kindness last week. While standing in line at Wal-Mart, I wasn’t really paying attention and my bottle of Coke Zero evidently tipped, falling past the divider on the cashier line and into the purchases of the woman in front of me. The cashier rang it up, but when the other woman realized she had been charged for my bottle of pop, she turned and handed it to me and told me to have a Coke on her. I tried to pay her as she turned and w...

Anyone who has read this column since it started, has read about my parents and the respect I have for the love they share and the way they live their lives. On the day this paper will come out, our family will be gathering to celebrate this couple on their 60th wedding anniversary, with a Norwegian themed party. These two people have set the bar high for their kids and grand-kids and their example is one that we all strive for in our own relationships. Their journey started with a blind date...

  • County: Road crews ready for fall, statewide recount underway for Reimers

    Allison Lindgren|Aug 27, 2018

Eddy County Road Superintendent Irvin Loe reported at the Eddy County Commission meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 21, that the road crew has replaced many signs and are still identifying other signs in need of replacement within the county. The Commissioners told Loe about signs that were faded or otherwise in need of replacement. Loe said they will start mowing ditches in a week or two. Commissioner Glenda Collier told Loe that she had ordered more of the culvert markers they had tried last year that...

    Allison Lindgren|Aug 27, 2018

It was an eye-opening few days, that’s for sure. One day I listened to someone with “liberal” views share that, for the first time in his life, he didn’t feel like he could honestly share his political views because of the business ramifications that came with being honest. Two days later, I listened to the same type of complaint, except this time it came from a political “conservative,” who shared that she could no longer even share her views with her family. Personally, I wouldn’t have entered...
