  • Eyes that see the good in things: August 20, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Aug 20, 2018

Has anyone else noticed that the plants in your garden are unusually large this year? That’s something that would normally concern me because it seems that when the plants are impressive, the harvest is not. That doesn’t appear to be the case this year. Even with the lack of moisture, our tomato plants are huge, but they’re loaded with tomatoes. The cucumbers are producing far more than we can eat and the squash plants are going crazy. Winter squash gets planted in our garden every other year....

After a long wait, Eddy County has been granted an Interim Special Use Permit by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as they await final paperwork to be completed by the regional office. The permit will allow work to begin on the Lake Washington Road Project CNOC-1427(058), according to Stacy Whipp of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Allison Lindgren|Aug 13, 2018

Tracey (Weber) Miller, a New Rockford native and daughter of Todd and Lori Weber, was recently featured in the July issue of the Union Farmer, a magazine published by North Dakota Farmer's Union (NDFU), in their WILD (Women in Leadership Development) Spotlight. The writer, Brittany Lipetzky, discussed Miller's upbringing in Eddy County and her involvement in both the Farmer's Union EPIC day classes and the Farmer's Union Camps that she attended throughout high school. Miller and her husband, RJ...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: August 13, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Aug 13, 2018

Meeting up with a high school friend not long ago brought memories back that I hadn’t thought about for a long time. My friend and I went to the same school, the same small country church and belonged to the same 4-H club. I remember the early mornings and late nights I spent on the sun porch working to get my sewing projects ready to be exhibited. I even remember some of the items I made. Even though my parents let us each raise some calves one year, I didn’t show them at the fair, but I do...

  • Illustrated history of Sullys Hill National Game Preserve is a storybook unfolding before your eyes

    Allison Lindgren|Aug 13, 2018

Where did the summer go? With school starting next week already, this will be the last of the Regional Recreation road trips for the season. If you’re busy getting your kids ready for school, though, you may not have a free weekend before school starts. That’s what makes this trip perfect. It gives you a little time to get the kids settled into the school routine before you get ready to take another little day trip. Plus, it’s practically right in your own backyard! Sullys Hill National Game...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: August 6, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Aug 6, 2018

It’s been awhile since I’ve shared a story like this one. You may have seen it on Facebook or one of many other media outlets that covered it. Thirteen-year-old Haylie Wenke, her friend Ashley Dayton and her 6-year-old brother Raegan were biking home from a nearby park in Aurora, Colo., when they spotted a wallet underneath a car in Jamie Carlton’s driveway. The wallet not only contained the owner’s personal identification and credit cards, but it also contained $700 in cash. The possibi...

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 30, 2018

With an August 10 deadline looming, Eddy County commissioners combed through the annual budgets of county departments at the special meeting on Tuesday, July 24. As reported in last week’s New Rockford Transcript, the commissioners had also reviewed budgets at their last regular meeting. All submitted budgets included the cost of living adjustment and step increases that the commissioners had previously approved. The budgets reviewed at this meeting included the following:  • The Clerk of Court...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: July 30, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 30, 2018

“Happiness is not about getting what you want all the time. It’s about loving what you have and being grateful for it.” This message that my cousin posted on Facebook earlier this week really hit home for me, because I’d come to the same realization in my garden the weekend before. Sometimes people need to keep re-learning the same lessons repeatedly. Unfortunately, I might be one of those people. Have you ever noticed how many magazine articles and books use gardening stories when the message...

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 23, 2018

A benefit has been planned to help defray medical and travel costs for her continued treatment, and will be held on Saturday, July 28 at the New Rockford Eagles Club with a spaghetti dinner starting at 4:30 p.m. According to her daughter, Amber Horejsi, Semmens underwent an eight-hour surgery to remove a large tumor about a week after her initial diagnosis. The...

  • Eddy County Commission meeting dominated by storm recovery

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 23, 2018

Storm recovery was the topic of conversation at the recent Eddy County Commission meeting on Tuesday, July 17. Jess Earle, Emergency Manager for both Eddy and Foster counties, reported on the recent storm damage and recovery efforts. Earle is still tallying the numbers of companies, contractors and equipment that came into Eddy County to help with cleanup, as well as the damage dollar amounts as they are reported to her. New Rockford resident Deb Belquist stepped in to coordinate volunteers and...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- July 23, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 23, 2018

We don’t have to look far to see the good in things this week. First of all, there was no one hurt in the July 8 storm that caused so much damage. However, the effects of this storm will change the looks of New Rockford’s tree lined streets for a long time to come. The calm after the storm came Sunday morning and was the beginning of a flurry of activity for the people of Eddy County, New Rockford and Sheyenne. I woke up to wind damage in my own yard, but it wasn’t long before I was getti...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- July 16, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 16, 2018

Did you see the recent online article by ABC News about how “glamping” (short for glamor-camping) has become available on Governor’s Island in New York City? It’s part of an offering of options made available by Collective Retreats, a company that offers glamping options around the nation. Collective Retreats offers Summit Tents and Journey Tents. For a more luxurious stay, the hands-down choice would be the Summit Tents, dubbed “The Elevated Getaway” with 1,500 thread count sheets, complimenta...

  • Celebrating 85 years of peace: International Peace Gardens

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 9, 2018

"Living a peaceful legacy. We're celebrating 85 years of peace on July 14 and 15." These words welcome visitors to both the International Peace Garden website and to the 85th anniversary celebration. This weekend would be a great time to visit the Peace Garden, especially if you haven't been there for a while. The International Peace Garden's 2,400 acres straddle the border between the United States and Canada, about 110 miles northeast of Minot. The Peace Garden was opened to visitors in 1932...

  • Map of German Free Church cemetery plots now available at Eddy County Auditor's office

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 9, 2018

At the Eddy County Commission meeting on Tuesday, July 3, Eddy County Auditor Patty Williams told the commissioners that New Rockford resident, Shirley Packard, recently informed Eddy County officials that she found a map of the German Free Church cemetery, while going through some of her mother’s things. The map includes where the burial plots are and who is buried in them. People sometimes come to town, knowing that they have family buried there but people hadn’t known where to send them. The...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- July 9, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 9, 2018

“Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.” Oprah Winfrey Restore, Refresh, Renew, Recreate, Rejuvenate, Rediscover, and Relax. These are just a few of the “re” words that caught my attention this week. Have you ever noticed that adding the prefix “re” to words, can result in words with powerful, almost spiritual meanings?   “Re” words were all over the first page of my favorite spa’s website, as you see from this example. When you read this paragraph from their website, notice how...

  • Supreme Court ruling allows states to collect sales tax from out-of-state retailers

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 2, 2018

The United States Supreme Court ruled on Thursday, June 21 that states can now assert nexus (connection) for sales and use tax purposes without requiring a seller to have a physical presence in that state.   This decision by the Supreme Court in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. overturns the Supreme Court decisions that set precedent in Quill Corp. v. North Dakota (1992) and National Bellas Hess, Inc. v. Department of Revenue of Ill. (1967). Both of these decisions required retailers to have a p...

  • Eyes that see the good things

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 2, 2018

The yellow finches that have provided me with so much entertainment over the years are back at it again! Although they are noticeable in the garden, they most frequently catch my attention when I’m sitting in the TV room located on the southwest corner of the house. There, a corner window provides both a southern and western view, and the branches of three tall evergreens provide birdwatching entertainment for both me and my indoor cats. My recliner sits right in front of that corner window, a...

    Allison Lindgren|Jul 2, 2018

Located in the Turtle Mountain area, Lake Metisgoshe is a natural lake on the border of the United States and Canada and is home to the Club de Skinautique. Skinautique is a French word for "club of waterskiing and is pronounced "ski-noh-teek." The Club celebrated their 60th season last year. With a history going back to the late 1950's, the club's first performance occurred in 1958, when the Lake Metigoshe Improvement Association (LMIA) asked the club to perform as entertainment for their annua...

  • Where the food is Farmtastic

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 25, 2018

Mirek and Julia Petrovic moved to an abandoned homestead near Anamoose, N.D. in 2011, with a dream to bring their family up, living off the land. They wanted to teach their children where their food came from, and they found that the garden also provided their kids with a valuable work ethic. Soon, they were producing more than the family could consume, and Julia started selling produce at local farmer's markets under the name Slavic Heritage Farm. However, she was attending markets three days...

  • County still awaiting permit to raise Lake Washington Road

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 25, 2018

The Lake Washington, County Road 8, Site 4 Project was once again the topic of discussion at the Eddy County Commission meeting on Tues., June 19. The county has yet to receive a decision on its permit application filed with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on July 15, 2017. Even though nearly a year has passed and despite repeated calls and e-mails to USFWS from Steve Thompson of Interstate Engineering, the agency has still not granted the permit needed to proceed with the...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- June 25, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 25, 2018

When I went to Anamoose to visit with Mirek and Julia Petrovic about their food hub this week, it made me think a little more about my own garden. Prior to the visit, I had checked out their Facebook page. They’ve posted the most beautiful pictures of salads and desserts made with local ingredients and have been garnishing salads and desserts with the petals of Bachelor Buttons. They are so delicate and just lovely. So, when I drove out of my yard that morning, I looked at the bachelor buttons g...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: June 18, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 18, 2018

It seems that spring is finally giving way to summer. I enjoyed the spring flowers like I always do. The flowering crabapple trees are always amazing to me. The short-lived lilacs have always been my favorites. The early blossoming flowers and fruit trees have faded now though, and I am happy to say that I still have lilacs on a couple of my new lilac bushes. They started flowering early and they are still going strong. I hope that’s a sign of things to come. I would love to have lilacs that l...
