  • Eyes that see the good in things- June 4, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Jun 4, 2018

Many years ago, I was shopping in the Jamestown Mall, which at that time, held some of my favorite stores. Do you remember On the Countryside, a shop with lots of dishes, pottery, and home décor in little themed rooms? They also had a cute little coffee shop that served coffee drinks, teas, Italian sodas, soups, salads, sandwiches and desserts. Directly across the hall from On the Countryside was Warehouse Fabrics, a place that I could easily spend hours. The front of the store had bolts of...

  • This Memorial Day we honor the caretakers

    Allison Lindgren|May 28, 2018

This time of year, when you travel U.S. Highway 281 just north of New Rockford, you'll likely catch a glimpse of hundreds of light pink flowering crabapple trees contrasted against dark towering evergreens. It is like an invitation of sorts for passersby to stop and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of over 200 flowering crabapples planted at the St. John's and Prairie Home Cemetery, especially now as we come to remember the fallen this Memorial Day. Driving through the expansive cemetery grounds,...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- May 28, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|May 28, 2018

Like most of you, I’ve been remembering family members this week, preparing for Memorial Day. When I read this story, it reminded me of a young me, listening to my great-grandma tell stories about the young son who lost his life while serving his country. She would share something she about him and then, with her smile becoming a twinkle in her eyes, she would reach out and touch my little brother’s dimples. The dimples that would flash whenever he smiled and the same dimples she had seen when s...

  • Eyes that see the good in things

    Allison Lindgren|May 21, 2018

I remember hearing a speech a while ago that made me think. The speaker asked if people view you as a safe person to talk to. Then, she said that with the number of people who are affected by this current opioid crisis, if you don’t know someone affected by it personally, you may want to look within yourself to see if you are someone that your friends and family feel safe sharing their struggles with. Because we all probably do. Then a book I recently underscores that message. In her book, S...

Sarah Smith Warren, a local artist and community advocate, has recently purchased and renovated a portion of the former American Legion building on Central Avenue in New Rockford. Smith Warren is using the space for her newly relocated photography studio. While the exterior updates have been very visible for some time, the interior improvements have happened behind the curtains this winter. As shown in the photo below, the space is bright and beautiful, befitting of an artist. On Saturday, May 1...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: May 14, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|May 14, 2018

It could have started when I was watching the Norwegians rule the day in the Winter Olympics and the Norwegian athletes were doing so well. It could also be that my siblings and I are planning a Norwegian 60th wedding anniversary for my parents. Or maybe it’s just because we just passed Cinco de Mayo and I know that Syttende Mai will be here very soon. Whatever the reason, I have been thinking about my Norwegian roots and wanting to learn a little more about their customs. The more I learn a...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: May 7, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|May 7, 2018

Did you remember Mother’s Day is just around the corner? Not this Sunday but the next, on May 13. While the Mother’s Day that we celebrate is a recent development in the world of holidays, the basic idea goes back to ancient mythology—all the way back to the long-ago civilizations of the Greeks and Romans. The Greeks paid homage to Cybele, the mother figure of their gods, and the Romans dedicated an annual spring festival to the mother of their gods. In 16th century England, there was a speci...

Schuster, a New Rockford native and the New Rockford Transcript's graphic designer and photographer, displays a series of five butterfly photographs that can be viewed during the library's regular hours. • Eyes that see the good in things- April 30, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Apr 30, 2018

This week, while listening to Ashley Schuster speak about her love of photography, I was struck by how her face lit up as she talked about the places she had photographed. I also happened to read an article in Feature Shoot by Jenna Garrett called "The Inspiring Stories of Five Photographers Determined to Make a Difference," about inspiring photographers who have found a way to give back to their community through their art. Nick Brandt: Big Life Foundation. One of these photographers is...

A benefit is set for Thursday, April 26 at the New Rockford Eagles Club from 4 - 7 p.m. to help raise funds for her continued treatment. Taylin's mother Karla said that the diagnosis was stage 3 because the cancer was found in more than one area of her body, both in her neck and in her abdomen. Here in Eddy and Foster Counties, NDSU Extension Service partnered with local banks, credit unions and schools to provide a lesson to first grade students on earning, spending and saving. The goal of the partnership is to teach positive money behaviors at an early age. As a part of the lesson, each student was provided with a piggy...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: April 23, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Apr 23, 2018

It seems to be a little gloomy today, although if the sun can burn through the fog, I think we might have the start of one of our first spring days. It seems fitting that it’s a little overcast as I sit here and think about former First Lady Barbara Bush. I don’t know if you’ve read many of the articles, and I’m not sure you can back the statement up, but some are saying that she died as the most popular First Lady ever. Like I said, I don’t know if that’s true, but she was certainly someone I a...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: April 16, 2018

    ALlison Lindgren|Apr 16, 2018

I barely saw his face out of the corner of my eye as he poked his head around the wall of the school commons area. He disappeared in a flash of blonde hair when he saw his curly haired senior nemesis rising to his feet. The chair hit the wall, as the seventh grader was chased down the hall. The pounding of tennis shoes and the laughter of the lanky basketball player echoed in the otherwise silent hallway. The longer legs of the older boy allowed him to quickly overtake the younger one, as he...

  • Crack sealing on county roads slowed by weather

    Allison Lindgren|Apr 9, 2018

The Eddy County Road Department is still working on sealing cracks on Eddy County’s paved roads, according to Eddy County Road Superintendent Irvin Loe. Although March is usually the best time for crack sealing so the tar sets up quickly, the wind and snow has slowed their progress. They have received some complaints about the tar, but doing it now will help it to set up much faster than if they waited until it was warmer. A complaint was received from a township that had been billed for snow r...

  • Eyes that see the good in things

    Allison Lindgren|Apr 9, 2018

Occasionally, I find myself thinking about Baby Jessica and I wonder what became of her. If you were an adult at the time, you'll remember the Baby Jessica story. I think I was so emotionally tied to it because I had a daughter who was about the same age. I also operated a home daycare at the time. I couldn't imagine the pain that either the parents or the daycare provider were experiencing. Yesterday, I decided to do a little research and thought I'd share my findings with you. I discovered...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: April 2, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Apr 2, 2018

As much as I complain about Facebook and threaten to close my account, I never do. The truth is, I would really miss the features that I have grown accustomed to having access to. When you don’t live close to your family, it’s nice to be able to see pictures of great niece dressed so cute for her first day of school, see that lost tooth, share the excitement of your nephew passing his driver’s test and taking the car out for the first time or watching my sister and niece record their girl...
