  • Eyes that see the good in things- Soup Cafe

    Allison Lindgren|Mar 11, 2019

The cold weather that North Dakota has been experiencing has generated its fair share of jokes, complaints and Facebook posts. I’ll admit— I have been one of the complainers, and would love to have a few more days at average March temperatures. However, this winter has also taught me to be careful what I wish for. It seems like every time I think it’s going to warm up, we get high winds or snow. I’m not sure which of those I would rather have. Yes, I sometimes feel a twinge of guilt when I...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- March 4, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Mar 4, 2019

Facebook certainly gets me thinking; I see a story there and I wind up looking other places to find more information. You may have seen this story on Facebook, too. The story takes place in an area near Franklin Square in Washington D.C., about two blocks from the White House in an area that is inhabited by many people without a home. A typical morning will find area homeless dressed in layers of donated clothing to stay warm. Finding food and shelter is their work for the day. It’s also the a...

    Allison Lindgren|Mar 4, 2019

Senate Bill 2037, which addresses the transportation, storage and disposal of nuclear waste in North Dakota passed the Senate on Feb. 18. It was initially heard by the Joint Energy and Natural Resources Committee on Jan. 4, 2019, and several amendments were made before it came to the floor. Now it’s headed to the House.  Proponents of the bill say it is necessary to clean up outdated language in existing state law, set guidelines and define a process for the state to respond if the federal gover...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- Feb. 25, 2019

    ALlison Lindgren|Feb 25, 2019

I saw a video on Facebook yesterday that made me go in search of this story, just to see if the story was real. The story is a wonderful example about making a difference to just one person. You’re probably aware of the actor Zach Galifianakis, who was in the movie “The Hangover,” back in 2009. “The Hangover” was a comedy and the first of three movies in what it called the “The Hangover Trilogy. It tells the story of Phil Wenneck, Stu Price, Alan Garner and Doug Billings, who travel to Las Vega...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- Feb. 11, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Feb 11, 2019

I have to confess that I’ve always been a little cynical about Valentine’s Day celebrations. It was never one of those important holidays to me and one that I wouldn’t be heartbroken if it was forgotten. Although, honestly, with all the hearts, flowers, cards, stuffed animals and decorations that are displayed in stores, it would be pretty hard to forget Valentine’s Day, wouldn’t it? Don’t get me wrong— I wouldn’t be very happy if my birthday or anniversary were forgotten. And I’m all about m...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Feb. 4, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Feb 4, 2019

Winter has finally decided to show up, hasn’t it? Just when I had lulled myself into believing that we might miss out on our typical North Dakota winter, Mother Nature decided to make things a little more interesting. This week’s snow, blizzard and bitter cold has reminded us that North Dakota winters are not to be taken lightly. The upside to this story is that January is now behind us and we really only have February and March to get through. Winter is definitely the toughest time of year for...

  • Eyes that see the good things in things: Jan. 28, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Jan 28, 2019

Have I told you about the 21-day Gratitude Challenge that I accepted on Facebook? It was something that was right up my alley and I’ve enjoyed the daily thought-provoking questions and reading material the leader has been providing. The first day of the challenge, we only had to list three things we for which were grateful. One day, we all posted pictures of something for which we were most grateful. It was the challenge on the sixth day that got me thinking though. The moderator of the group to...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Jan. 21, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Jan 21, 2019

I am a master procrastinator. It’s true. It goes all the way back to junior high, but I got better at it as I got older because I practiced a lot. If you’re also a procrastinator, you understand what it’s like to put off an assignment for days or weeks at a time. Then, when it comes down to the wire, you put in an all-nighter, only finishing half an hour before it’s due. All the while, you tell yourself that you thrive under these conditions and that you do your best work under pressur...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: January 11, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Jan 14, 2019

This weather, with its polar extremes is getting a little difficult to live with. We go from beautiful sunny skies with warm temperatures one day to freezing temperatures the next day with wind gusts that take your breath away. And not in a good way. So, I know that you can also relate to the winter story on Facebook written by a Californian who moved to North Dakota. Those of us who live in the Northern Plains can all relate to the snow days where getting stuck is inevitable for those who dare...

by Allison Lindgren As we move forward into a new year, we reflect back on the some of the headlines of 2018. This is the first of a two-part series, with stories from January through June. January District 23 Senator Joan Heckaman of New Rockford was one of 14 statewide leaders appointed by N.D. Governor Burgum to serve on his Task Force for Higher Education Governance. • Eyes that see the good in things - Jan. 7, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Jan 7, 2019

Something that touched a chord with me this weekend while I was with family was noticing how quickly children change. We can look in those little faces and see so much of our family written in them. Yes, there is the occasional child that looks like the OTHER side of the family, but usually we can pick out many of our features. As I talked to those nieces and nephews of ours, they all talked about how fast time was going and how those little ones grow faster than you can ever dream. Anyone who...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Dec. 31, 2018

    ALlison Lindgren|Dec 31, 2018

New Years was one of those few times of the year that as children, we got to have a Coke— and that made it a party! In our eyes, our New Year’s Eve parties were just as fun as Christmas, but the celebrations were very different. The Christmas celebration was a more quiet, worshipful celebration. New Year’s celebration was just to have fun. They were game nights, with contests and competitions. We had always gotten new games for Christmas and New Year’s was a great time to try them out. The games...

  • County Commission prepares for a new year

    ALlison Lindgren|Dec 24, 2018

The Eddy County Commission wrapped up its final meeting for 2018 with some old business on the agenda, deciding that the roads the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) Traffic Count operation had scheduled for Eddy County were adequate for the county. They will not add any more than the state has already stipulated. The county had two properties that did not sell at the Delinquent Tax Property sale. The commissioners agreed to abate the taxes on both and turn them over to the City...

  • Eyes that see the good in things- Dec. 17, 2018

    ALlison Lindgren|Dec 17, 2018

I certainly love the change that’s taking place in my mailbox these days when I stop to get the mail. It was just last month that election mail was filling our mailboxes. But with the election over, those mailings ended and we are left with our normal mail. Which in our case is normally a not-so-fun blend of bills and junk. Then Christmas came, and suddenly, getting the mail became fun again! Cards with beautiful wintry scenes, depicting that “Silent Night,” meaningful to those of us who under...

  • Longtime county road supervisor Loe retires

    ALlison Lindgren|Dec 10, 2018

In a move that marked the end of an era, long time Eddy County Road Supervisor Irvin Loe hung up the keys to his old blade for the last time on Nov. 30. Loe began his career in the 1950s working for Campbell Construction Company, where he worked for 20 years. It was the kind of place, Loe described, that "(you) started out picking rock and then would kind of work your way up, running the packer, the water truck and then finally, the blade." In Loe's job with the Campbells, he traveled with them...

The Eddy County Commission meeting on Dec. 4 signaled change. Neal Rud took his oath of office, something that each of the elected officials do on an annual basis. Commissioners Neal Rud and Glenda Collier said that Dave Gehrtz, newly elected to the commission, will attend the next county commission meeting and take the oath of office at that time. Gehrtz will also begin representing Eddy County at the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center meetings. Ashley Lies, Eddy County State’s A...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: Canadian Pacific Holiday Train

    ALlison Lindgren|Dec 10, 2018

The snow and the Christmas music wafting from the Rockford Theatre are definitely setting the scene for another holiday season. Our Christmas to-do lists are already long, but there is one item that is being added to mine this year. Although the Holiday Train comes very close to our area, making stops in both Carrington and Harvey, I must confess that I have only seen it once. The magical Canadian Pacific Holiday Train is back for its twentieth year of raising money, food and awareness for local...
