  • Snowmageddon: 5-day blizzard piles on snow, paralyzes state

    Nathan Price and Amy Wobbema|Dec 26, 2022

For nearly a week, from Dec. 12 through Dec. 16, Foster County and much of the Great Plains endured one of the most severe and long-lasting blizzards in recent memory.  Most of North Dakota was effectively shut down, as crews worked around the clock to clear city streets. Meanwhile, Monday's freezing rain and the near-zero visibility that followed often made county roads and highways impassable.  Both the New Rockford-Sheyenne and Carrington Public Schools, and many more throughout the state...

  • A resolution worth keeping

    Amy Wobbema|Dec 26, 2022

New year’s resolutions - who actually sticks to them anyway? I’ve said for years that there is no reason to make one if I don’t plan to keep it. Thus, I haven’t made any resolutions for some time.  Readers, this year is different.  So many people I love and respect have told me that I have “too much on my plate.” “You’ll find a way to get it all done,” I keep telling myself. “Just finish these three (or 10) more items on the to-do list and you can rest.” The trouble is, the list keeps getting...

  • Wishing you grace and peace this Christmas

    Amy Wobbema|Dec 19, 2022

Through all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I have to keep reminding myself to take work and life one step at a time. “Do one thing well, and then move on to the next,” I think.  From workforce shortages and winter storms to shipping delays and sick days, we are all dealing with a lot.  A colleague of mine missed a meeting a couple of weeks ago, and after learning that it was totally out of her control, I understood. “We all need a little grace and peace this holiday season, tha...

  • Commission resolves to renew Renaissance Zone program

    Amy Wobbema|Dec 12, 2022

An incentive program designed to encourage investment in New Rockford is slated for renewal. Amanda Hegland, Executive Director of the New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation, appealed to the New Rockford City Commission Monday to renew the Renaissance Zone program. The Renaissance Zone is a state program designed to help revitalize communities. • Finding joy in the local experience

    Amy Wobbema|Dec 5, 2022

A fledgling caterer lands a foundation gala and falls for her client's nephew, who is assigned to make sure the meal goes perfectly. An owner of a farm and home goods store tries to convince a reporter for a magazine that her friends who help run the store are her family. A reporter moves to a small town in Alaska and takes over the local newspaper at Christmas time. Yes, I am a sucker for sappy Christmas movies. From Thanksgiving to New Year's Day (with a few other days sprinkled in the rest...

  • Mom pride at courtside

    Amy Wobbema|Nov 28, 2022

As I write this, I’m preparing to sleep in my own bed for the first time since Wednesday (and it’s Sunday). Armed with my media pass, new Rocket gear and Erik Gjovik’s Nikon camera, I spent the last three days soaking up all that North Dakota Class B sports has to offer. As reported in the Nov. 14 edition, this was New Rockford-Sheyenne’s first trip to state for volleyball. Now, I’ve attended state tournaments before, i.e. archery and the Dakota Bowl in 2012, but this was a whole new ball game...

The holiday season is upon us. For some, the tree is already up and a slew of gifts have already been purchased. For others, all their holiday planning is shoved into a few weeks, or even a few days.  Regardless of where you fall in that spectrum, you know that it's a little chaotic between Thanksgiving and the new year.  Need a break from the frenzy? • Tradition with a twist

    Amy Wobbema|Nov 7, 2022

My husband and I started our relationship on a gravel road in rural Wells County (somewhere between Barlow and Cathay, if my memory serves me correctly) exactly 22 years ago this past weekend. At that time there were over a dozen Wobbema family members out for the opening day of deer gun season. I remember the sea of blaze orange and caravan of pickup trucks. That was my first adult experience hunting, and I will carry it with me for life. Since I didn’t have a tag, I walked treebelts in my p...

  • Bringing art to life

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 31, 2022

This week Transcript Publishing brought a new publication into existence. My sister, Victoria, is an artist. Ever since she was a little girl, she has drawn and painted and brought things to life with her imagination. Recently, she drew a series (26 in total) of sketches related to witches, and then she brought me her sketchbook with a project in mind. She wanted me to publish her sketches into a coloring book she could launch just in time for Halloween. Welcome "Witch, Please!" to the list of...

  • New trees, landscaping among improvements to cemetery

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 24, 2022

Another season of outdoor work has ended for volunteers and caretakers of the St. John's and Prairie Home Cemeteries north of New Rockford. Among the highlights of this year's work is the new landscaping around the Veterans Memorial. Paid for by the Post 30 American Legion Auxiliary, the landscaping adds life to the memorial in the middle of the grounds, which is blanketed by St. Johns to the east and Prairie Home to the west. Tree planting efforts continue, to replace the many lost in the 2018...

That’s according to an Oct. 3 letter sent by NR-S Superintendent Jill Louters to parents/guardians of students along the route. • All Things October

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 10, 2022

We turned the calendar over to a new month this past week, at seemingly record-breaking speed. It has now been one year since I became publisher of two newspapers, and I just don’t know where the time has gone. I must be having fun! October is a month of transition. We move into a new season, one much colder than the season before it. Bundle up in a cable-knit sweater or wrap a cozy blanket around your shoulders and come along with me! I’m looking ahead to all things October, because before I kn...

  • Community rallies to support Ellingson family

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 3, 2022

An outpouring of support for the Cayler Ellingson family was on display this past week, evidence that in rural North Dakota communities residents step up to help whoever is in need. Family friend Nicole (Clifton) Geiszler started a GoFundMe account on Monday, Sept. 19 in support of the Ellingsons. As of Thursday (Sept. 29) morning, the GoFundMe campaign had raised more than $52,000 from over 1,300 individual donations. That is more than five times the amount originally requested when the fund...

  • It all takes balance

    Amy Wobbema|Oct 3, 2022

Lifestyle changes are hard, especially when it comes to food. About two months ago, my husband and I decided to make a change in our diets. Since he doesn’t like it when I talk about him in my columns, I’ll focus on what we’re doing and why I took the leap. In a nutshell, it’s the Wobbema low-carb diet. We simply eat more grams of protein, and fewer simple sugars and carbohydrates. I’m doing it because it makes me feel better. I don’t need all that bread, baked goods, pasta and potatoes. I...

  • Life is a series of volleys

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 26, 2022

I attended an NR-S vs. Carrington volleyball match as publisher of both newspapers for the first time on Thursday, Sept. 15.  I saw administrators and school board members of both schools at the match, not to mention plenty of readers and advertisers, a good crowd overall. My daughter is a varsity starter for the Rockets, so that added another element. Of course, I was wearing columbia blue and black, but I was paying close attention to both teams that night.  The match was intense, proba...

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 26, 2022

  • City aware of water quality issues, working to identify the source

    Amy Wobbema|Sep 19, 2022

The public works department continues to work with contractors to finish the punch list for the water plant project. Public Works Superintendent Bruce Hirchert told city commissioners at their Sept. 7 meeting that he tried different filters as recommended, but they are only lasting six days rather than 14. He is checking into the price difference to see which ones are more efficient long-term. The reverse osmosis treatment system is running, yet residents still have colored water at the tap....
