I thrive on deadlines. I get a sense of accomplishment every time I can check something off my to-do list, flip through the pages of a newspaper fresh off the press, or see a finished project come to life. I even had shirts made for the staff in New Rockford that said, “Just Duck It.” The “duck” represents the file transfer software, Cyberduck, that we use to send our newspaper pages to press. When we are ready, we “feed the duck” with .pdf files, one for each page in the print edition. Th...
I have a song by Kenny Chesney in my head right now, “The Boys of Fall.” “Standin' in the huddle listenin' to the call “Fans goin' crazy for the boys of fall” Yes, it's Homecoming, and this time of year, I drift back to the autumns of my youth. I’m a football fan to the core. It’s one of the only things I actually like about the fall season, in fact, other than the beauty of the leaves changing color. If I’m home and there’s a game to watch, it’s probably on the flat screen in my living room. Th...
“Not everyone is going to be happy; everyone has to pay,” New Rockford City Commission President Stuart Richter told a crowd of about 75 property owners Tuesday evening. His remarks came at the beginning of the Special Assessment Committee (SAC) hearing held to hear objections from property owners. The committee had released the amount of special assessments to be applied to each of the 978 parcels in Special Assessment Districts 2021-1 and 2022-1. SAC chairman Jerry Seibold said the com...
We’ve had some heavy news weeks this summer. Burglaries, fatal crashes, residents fighting cancer, and a suspected murder-suicide were among the hard news headlines of the summer 2022 news cycle in our area. That said, we’ve also celebrated a lot. Our communities have a way of coming together when we really need to, don’t we? When I reflect on this past summer, a song by The Byrds comes to mind, “Turn, Turn, Turn.” We’ve had “A time to dance, a time to mourn,” all in the past few months. Ple...
As the old joke goes, there are only two seasons in North Dakota: winter and road construction. If there was a year where that is more true, it would be 2022. Our area saw snowstorms in late April, and as soon as the white crap melted work was underway on numerous construction projects. This construction season our pages have been filled with updates on the various projects underway. We're "under construction," folks, "a work in progress." Three major highway projects are underway, according to...
Another chapter of community garden history has been written. In observance of the New Rockford Community Garden's move across the street into Centennial Park, I did a little research on the origins of New Rockford's downtown gem. It all began thanks to the efforts of one man: Edwin Horning, a 1940 graduate of NRHS and longtime resident. Horning was a rural mail carrier for nearly 30 years, as well as a Boy Scout leader. He first planted the garden in 1985, on the land upon which the old...
I was excited for the Mini Market in Carrington City Park last Tuesday, as it was a chance to see the next generation of movers and shakers in business, in action. I unfortunately couldn’t make it, so reporter Erik Gjovik was my eyes and ears at the event. Erik visited four young entrepreneurs, and there was a common theme among them. They were all inspired by an enterprising adult, in most cases their parents. Liza Steele from New Rockford sold custom greeting cards. Her business was aptly n...
The Sheyenne community will gather once again this summer to support one of its own fighting cancer. On Thursday, Aug. 11, volunteers will host a benefit spaghetti supper and silent auction for Sharon Whitmer. Whitmer was diagnosed with a fast-growing form of breast cancer in April. What led to the diagnosis, Whitmer says, was pure "divine intervention." She had her annual mammogram in January, as she has faithfully done for years. However, something abnormal showed up on the scan. So...
City officials approved the first change order on the street project, which involves installation of curb and gutter, as well as additional improvements to the gravel road in Watson Addition. The cost is estimated at $86,990. The change order was presented by Travis Dillman of Interstate Engineering. He noted that the concrete crew also installed a new sidewalk on the north side of the 600 block of Central Avenue. Commission President Stu Richter said it was due to the condition of the existing...
Today I’m noshing on a summer salad and sipping raspberry tea from inside the Garden Gate, Carrington’s downtown gathering place. The exposed brick walls, tin ceilings and beautiful barnwood details, as well as the wireless internet and music in the background, are all things I appreciate about it. In fact, I suggested that one of my newspaper colleagues spend time here when she came to town a couple of weeks ago. She had a little work to do before our meeting, and I told her it was the ide...
A Sheyenne man was killed in an early morning ATV crash on Saturday, July 23. According to a report from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Keith Drake, 60, of Sheyenne was traveling northbound on 2nd Street North in Sheyenne around 2:25 a.m. The 2013 Can-Am Outlander he was driving hit a parked commercial motor vehicle north of the intersection with Riverside Avenue. Drake was ejected from the ATV, and he was provided medical attention at the scene. Drake was taken to CHI St. Alexius Carrington...
North Dakota’s taxable sales and purchases for the first quarter of 2022 were up 13.2 percent compared to the same timeframe in 2021. Taxable sales and purchases for January, February, and March of 2022 were $4.7 billion. “It’s encouraging to see continued growth in taxable sales and purchases for the beginning of 2022, a reflection of buying activity by consumers and businesses across the state,” State Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus said. “This is the fourth quarter in a row that the state has...
I had the privilege of inviting newspaper colleagues of mine from across the state to central North Dakota recently. This was one of the "perks" of serving as president of the North Dakota Newspaper Association that I looked forward to the most. I know our communities are pretty great, and I couldn't wait to show them off. We met under the "Big Chief," a central North Dakota landmark in Carrington. We dined at the Chieftain Sports Bar & Grill, which serves bison ribeye processed locally at...
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes…including you.” – Anne Lamott For the first time since I became a newspaper publisher, I “unplugged” for three days. I left my phone and my laptop in the room where we were staying, and I took a break from the constant emails and phone calls that generally fill my days and enjoyed being fully present with family. I have my in-laws to thank for the opportunity. They booked this trip for us a year ago, as a Christmas p...
With a local provider on staff and a great New Rockford location in the works, an area medical center has plans to expand into Eddy County. Cooperstown Medical Center (CMC) has announced plans to open the New Rockford Satellite Clinic on Aug.1. The clinic will be located in a wing of the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd. The entrance will be near the Chapel, along 13th Street. This entrance allows people to access the clinic without having to enter the long term care facility, as well as enhan...
A relic was reduced to rubble recently. The two-lane bowling alley turned storage area behind Hanson's Bar was torn down last week. Robbie Lies, who spent nearly six decades behind the bar at Hanson's, told the Transcript Wednesday that former owner Irvin Hanson said the bowling alley was in operation in the 1930s and '40s. When Lies began working there in 1960, it had been closed for about 10 years. It was likely the only operating bowling alley in town for a time, when the property was known...
Five years have passed since the City of New Rockford's application for water system improvements was first submitted to USDA-RD. Yet, work still remains at the city's water treatment plant. Wade Senger of Interstate Engineering, the project manager, told city commissioners during their Tuesday, July 5 meeting that he had gone through the plant that afternoon and identified several punch list items yet to be completed. "Hopefully throughout the next two weeks we will work on getting those...
Independence Day is my favorite holiday. Since I was little, I have looked forward to the annual mid-summer celebration. I mean, what’s not to love? The weather is warm, the sun is bright, and there’s plenty to do and many people to see. As a girl, I remember going to get firecrackers, smoke bombs and ground blooms from the local fireworks stand. Family barbecues, and the parades in New Rockford, Carrington and Sheyenne were often on the list for the holiday. My aunt Carrie (Schimelfenig) Krause...
She's a mail carrier many New Rockford residents see six days a week, and who celebrates 25 years with the United States Postal Service (USPS) this year. A timely recognition, as Debbie Rost was selected as the New Rockford Chamber's Employee of the Month for June. Rost started her career in 1997, with part-time status as a clerk in Carrington. As she explains, she often worked six days a week even as a part-time employee. Hired as a clerk in the Carrington post office, she was often sent to...
Publishing public notices is our civic duty as newspapers. From the Abstract of Votes that officially reports the results of a recent election (as published in the Transcript this week, page B3, and in the Independent on page 7), to the minutes of city, county and school board meetings, we dedicate on average a full page per week or more to protecting the public's right to know by publishing these important community messages. You may have read articles and editorials stating that newspapers...
It's just your average downtown flower shop, the place you go when you need a bouquet for someone you love or a corsage for a special occasion. Or is it? DPRCA presents "Little Shop of Horrors," where the music is familiar and fun, and the storyline holds a bit of a surprise. "Little Shop of Horrors," is a comedy rock musical with music by Alan Menken and lyrics and book by Howard Ashman. The story follows a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that subsists on a very specific and...
The City of New Rockford has secured financing for the street project. Auditor Becki Schumacher and President Stu Richter negotiated the terms with the Bank of North Dakota this past month. Interstate Engineering prepared an updated opinion of probable cost, which they presented at the city commission’s Monday, June 6 meeting. The total is $7,692,000. Wade Senger of Interstate Engineering noted that the contingency budget had been increased, but overall the project is expected to cost $1 million...
This Thursday evening, downtown New Rockford plays host to the first Summer Street Market of the season. Grab a bite to eat from the Mexican Munchies food truck or the Cities Service Luncheonette. Coffee, tea shakes and other beverages will be available from the Happy Camper. Then wander around Centennial Park and shop from among 17 vendors: • Hawkes Homestead • In the Dog House Custom Designs • Daisy Bake Shop • Hardy Salsa • CLB Soaps • Cacti and Cows • Birtsell Farms • Tupperware • He...
If you are like me, you were waiting for the release of “Top Gun: Maverick” for a while. A product of the ‘80s, the original 1986 film was among those I could watch over and over again. I had “Top Gun” on VHS as a teenager. When I was a junior in college, I rented an efficiency apartment in Moorhead. It was basically a one-room suite with a tiny kitchenette. A futon doubled as my couch and bed. At least it had its own bathroom. The laundry room was next door, which was also a plus. With no funds...
Lynnae Lies was named the 2022 New Rockford-Sheyenne Teacher of the Year by Bank Forward. Since graduating from Mayville State University, Lies has committed 28 years to NR-S. In addition to her roles as an elementary, Title 1 and personalized learning academy teacher at NR-S, Lies has participated in leadership developments, accreditation review teams, coaching, advising and more. "She is a true servant leader and team player, with a drive to serve the ever-changing needs of our students,"...
