  • Look ma', no hands!

    Amy Wobbema|May 30, 2022

Rocket Wash, New Rockford's first automatic, touchless car wash, is coming soon. Zach and Lauren Fleming of New Rockford and Eastern Eddy County residents Mark and Lisa Becker are the owners, and they're ready to bring locals a new solution to get the grime off their car, pickup or SUV. Plans have been in place for months, and they've waited patiently for the right conditions to break ground. "Obviously, weather has really impacted that, and is still impacting that," Zach Fleming said. "We need...

  • Good things come in good time

    Amy Wobbema|May 23, 2022

It was about this time of year, 22 years ago, when I was on the precipice of my future. There I was, in my second semester of university, and my roommate had an epiphany: we should "go away" for the summer, she surmised. She had a poster in hand from the Ponderosa Ranch, an amusement park on Lake Tahoe, Nevada, that was built to celebrate the legacy of the popular western TV show, "Bonanza." Now this is where many of you, dear readers, will go down memory lane. How many of you watched...

The NRABC seeks an individual or entity interested in operating a private childcare business and leasing the Club Room in the Brown Memorial. The space should be able to accommodate a “group 20” or “group 30” license to begin Hegland reviewed with commissioners some of the upgrades needed to open a...

  • Make your communication handwritten and heartfelt

    Amy Wobbema|May 9, 2022

One can make the argument that communication may be the single most important aspect of human existence. I couldn't agree more. As a professional communicator, I strive daily to communicate as effectively as possible. I've found there's no better way to connect with those who aren't close enough to visit than through handwritten letters. From soldiers and their sweethearts corresponding during wartime, to close friends spread across the country keeping each other up to date on their lives, there...

One of the movement experts at Peak Performance Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine, PLLC, was named the Employee of the Month for April. She communicates with her doctors and truly cares about the bigger picture," Hegland said. "She is so good with Piper, figuring out...

  • Grant program provides street trees at no cost to residents

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 18, 2022

More new trees will be planted along New Rockford’s streets this spring. A $10,000 award from the North Dakota Forest Service’s Community Forestry grant program will put an estimated 50-60 trees in the ground, as well as allow local officials to clean up street trees damaged by the 2018 wind storm. The grant requires a 50/50 match with labor, cash or other in-kind donations. For part of the $10,000 match, the city public works crew has agreed to remove some remaining street trees that were dam...

  • Bids for street project come in under budget

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 11, 2022

At a time when the cost of everything appears to be going up, the low bid for New Rockford’s street improvements came in $1 million less than engineers anticipated. Six companies submitted bids for the paving portion of the project, which was estimated at $7.3 million last fall. Wade Senger of Interstate Engineering reported at the Monday, April 4 city commission meeting, “There was a lot of interest in this project.” The bids had been opened earlier that day. Bituminous Paving of Orton...

  • Word games are my daily therapy

    Amy Wobbema|Apr 11, 2022

I’m a word nerd. Words are fun and games to me, a lifelong writer. I enjoy searching for the right synonym or phrase to spice up an otherwise ordinary article. At the newspaper office, crafting headlines is another form of “word game” to us. From puns and alliteration to acronyms and homophones, we try them all to get readers’ attention. I will say, headlines still aren’t my strong suit, even after seven years in the newspaper business. In the annual North Dakota newspaper contest, we usually g...

  • Opinion: Ready to say goodbye to the time changes

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 28, 2022

If I could, I think I'd wake up with the sun. There's nothing better than rising with the sun as it streams through the west window of my bedroom. This time of year, I'm usually still in a stupor from the time change, as the first weeks of Daylight Saving Time have me waking up and preparing myself for the day in darkness. After a long winter like we've had this year, those early mornings of pitch blackness zap the energy right out of me. That's why I'm watching the bill before Congress to elimi...

  • With bids in, commissioners seek public input on recycling

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 14, 2022

Three waste disposal companies submitted bids to the New Rockford City Commission Monday. While there was a clear low bid for the garbage removal portion of the contract, the recycling options were a bit murkier. All three companies that had appeared before the commission in recent months as they evaluated options did submit bids: Waste Management, the current contract holder; Cathay-based Double M Sanitation and Recycle North Dakota, headquartered in Jamestown. As for garbage removal services,...

  • Comedy on tap at DPRCA with "I'm Just Wild About Harry"

    Amy Wobbema|Mar 7, 2022

It's time to go way back to the turn of the century, the 20th century that is. Dakota Prairie Regional Center for the Arts (DPRCA) presents "I'm Just Wild About Harry," opening Friday, March 18 at the Old Church Theatre in New Rockford. This exciting musical romp based on a late-1800s play features nostalgic favorites such as "Daisy Bell (A Bicycle Built for Two)," "Aba Daba Honeymoon," "You Made Me Love You," and, of course, the title tune, "I'm Just Wild About Harry," written in 1921 and...

    Amy Wobbema|Feb 28, 2022

Next Monday, March 7, New Rockford city commissioners will review bids for garbage collection services in the city. Besides the obvious goal of getting the lowest possible price on an essential service (garbage collection) without sacrificing service or quality, officials have another target in mind– recycling. Therefore, companies interested in bidding have been asked to include a quote for recycling services. Amanda Hegland, executive director for the New Rockford Area Betterment C...

  • Winter is planning season

    Amy Wobbema|Feb 28, 2022

Amid all this wonderful wintery weather we’ve been experiencing, it may appear that no work is getting done. To the contrary, winter is what I refer to as “planning season.” Whether we gaze out the window from our warm offices or hunker down by the fireplace in our homes, our wheels are turning thinking about the months ahead. What kind of a year will we have? When and where will we travel? How many weddings and graduations are on the calendar? Do we have proper attire for them all? Here at the...

At their regular meeting on Feb. 7, Hegland reported that she received 59 responses from a childcare survey they distributed online last month. • Archery: Where everyone gets the same shot

    Amy Wobbema|Feb 14, 2022

Both Carrington and New Rockford hosted their annual archery tournaments over the past two weeks. As a parent of three teenagers, who all compete in archery and several other activities, I must say archery is among my favorites. Why? Well, as Jamie Risovi, retired head coach and founder of the Rocket Archery program at New Rockford-Sheyenne School once told me, “Everyone gets the same shot.” It’s absolutely true. Archery is a sport for the tall and the small. Each person is responsible for h...
