Volunteering is the ONE way to make a BIG investment in your community without spending a DIME. All you need is a little TIME. The value of that “little time” is more than you might think, too. Volunteers are worth on average $24.14 an hour according to an Independent Sector Study. When you think about it that way, if every resident in Eddy County volunteered for just one hour, the value of that time would be more than $55,000. That’s quite a boost for any rural economy. Add to that the impac...
The honorable work of the Women’s Auxiliary Cemetery Association is never done. In 1960, this group of women, representing all of the churches in the area, planted new shelterbelts on both the north and west side of the grounds. Now, nearly 50 years later, those trees have all had to be removed, leaving both the Prairie Home and St. John’s cemeteries longing for new growth. After the July 8, 2018 wind storm, the association rallied to clean up and take care of the cemeteries. Combined with the g...
“It’s not as dramatic as we first thought,” Commissioner Dave Gehrtz said of the clean-up work required at the former Mill Pump property. He reported on his follow-up discussion with officials from the Department of Environmental Quality at the commission’s regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 19 Gehrtz said he learned that the fuel tank in question was installed in 1997 or 98 when the business was operated by the Guthries. The agency sent a letter to former tenant Trevor Lesmeister in 2017 request...
On Thursday, Nov. 14, the National Honor Society at New Rockford-Sheyenne High School inducted 15 new sophomore members. In a 30-minute ceremony, each new inductee was recognized individually after the group collectively recited the pledge. New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation Executive Director Amanda Hegland delivered an inspiring address. A former National Honor Society member herself, she issued challenges to the students for each of the four pillars of the organization: scholarship, ser...
There is no doubt about it, ranching is an unpredictable way of life. Regardless of wind, rain, blizzard, drought or flood the animals have to be cared for and the crops need to be managed. This year's heavy fall rains followed by the early October blizzard has left farmers and ranchers across the state in a tough situation. As the weeks pass by it has become quite clear that area farmers and ranchers are tougher than anything that has been thrown their way. Among the tireless efforts to face...
Eddy County Emergency Manager Jess Earle stressed the importance of taking photos before, during and after repair work is done to the damage caused by flooding. All receipts for work completed should be kept as well, she said during the Eddy County Commission’s Nov. 5 meeting. “(The state) is looking at us to provide the damage assessments for them,” she noted. “They can’t get anybody out here.” In a call with state officials last week, Earle learned that it will likely be January before a feder...
Alexander Lail of New Rockford has filed an appeal with the North Dakota Supreme Court on his 2018 attempted murder conviction. On Aug. 1, 2018, Lail was found guilty of two counts of attempted murder for allegedly offering to pay two separate individuals to murder his then-wife and a former employee. At trial, Lail argued that his actions did not constitute a substantial step toward the commission of the alleged crime. The jury disagreed and found Lail guilty of two counts of attempted murder....

Last weekend’s early October blizzard continues to weigh heavily on the county and township roads. County Road Superintendent Todd Weber noted several areas of concern during the Eddy County Commission’s Oct. 15 meeting. There is water over the road leading to Walfords in Lake Washington Township, and County Road 6 by David Allmaras’ farm have trench washouts that need to be filled, as does County Road 1. Weber planned to inspect County Road 3 as well, as apparently the water was within a foot o...
An early October blizzard brought much of North Dakota to a screeching halt last weekend. Light rains began as early as Wednesday, turning to snow by Thursday. Area schools released classes early and folks made that much needed trip to the grocery store. Then just when it seemed that the snow was letting up, winds came in full force, pushing the heavy white stuff into towering drifts. With roads impassable and activities cancelled, most folks opted to spend Friday and much of Saturday morning...
The city water main replacement project is 8% complete, that’s according to Wade Senger of Interstate Engineering. He gave the city commission an update on the project during its Oct. 7 meeting. The lead contractor, BEK Consulting, has requested its first partial payment for work done thus far, a total of $436,318. Senger said that approximately 12% of the water main has been installed, or 3,000 ft. of the 27,000 total planned for the project. Paving is on hold however, Senger added, due to t...
The Eddy County 4-H program is ready for a renaissance. Over the past 10 years, two of the program's four facilities have been torn down, and its membership has dropped considerably. As far as NDSU Extension Agent Donna Anderson and the Eddy County 4-H Council are concerned, that trend ends now. This summer they embarked on a capital improvement plan, first by engaging Weisenburger Construction to pour a concrete floor for the 4-H auction barn at the Eddy County Fairgrounds. Then, using the hole...
The Eddy County Commission has decided to hire a full-time extension agent. Former NDSU Extension Agent Tim Becker opted to participate in the college’s voluntary separation incentive program and leave his position as of May 15. However, the commission hired Becker part-time to assist during the summer to ensure that the 4-H program and Steam Threshers event would have coverage. Now commissioners say it’s time to move on. ”I think a county agent is critical to our organization, our farming commu...
It was a milestone moment for CenDak Cooperative on Friday, Sept. 20. The first truckload of fertilizer was unloaded into the cooperative's new fertilizer facility that day. Now farmers can look forward to faster loading, custom blending and better supply right here in New Rockford. Planning began during the summer of 2018, and cooperative officials approached the City of New Rockford last September with a proposal to buy land north of the airport, adjacent to the company's propane yard. The...
Even though heavy rain on Friday night put a kibosh to the traditional weekend parades and threshing demonstrations, there were still plenty of learning opportunities to be had at the 61st Annual Central North Dakota Steam Threshers Reunion last weekend. Over 200 students from area schools walked the grounds on Friday, known as Education Day. There they got to see the steamers up close and spent time among the seven historic buildings in Pioneer Village....

On Monday, Sept. 9, Bruce and Colleen Hagen both got a big surprise. Colleen may have known that Bruce was to receive the "Grocer of the Year" award from the North Dakota Grocers Association that night (and she had been working hard to both get Bruce to the banquet and organize a congratulatory event at the store), but there was one thing she didn't know -the award was actually presented to the couple, 2019 Grocers of the Year! It was an honor well deserved, as for the past 38 years they've been...

The pool log showed 450 more visits throughout its season this summer than last. New Rockford Park District Manager Dennis Nybo reported that and other details about the agency’s activities at the Sept. 3 city commission meeting. Annual swim passes were also up a fair amount, from 56 last year to 89 this year. The pool was open more than 80% of a possible 68 days, as they were closed 2.5 days due to staffing shortage and another 9.5 days due to weather. Nearly 100 youth participated in summer l...
As the water in the swimming pool empties after a great summer season, New Rockford Park District Manager Dennis Nybo is there. He’s knee deep in his rubber boots, making sure that every valve is open and each line is completely drained. This is his 34th year working with outdoor pool structures, and his experience is evident. So is his way of working with people, scheduling baseball and softball games, ensuring that the diamonds are in shape for play, and inspecting facilities to identify m...
