  • Letter to the Editor: Explanations and thoughts

    Calvin J. Packard, New Rockford, N.D.|Nov 8, 2021

Open letter to the New Rockford, N.D. public at large. First and foremost I do believe in God, I support and defend the U.S. Constitution, am pro-life and I am an anti-Communist! I participated in the Cold War. I personally chopped some pieces out of the Berlin Wall. I am such an anti-Communist, I fired my red blood cells for being red! Side note, for those who do not know, I have been fighting low blood pressure for 44 months and finally found out it is due to my red blood cells not...

  • Thoughts can become action

    Calvin J. Packard|Jan 25, 2021

A few New Rockford residents have inquired about the United State Flag that is being flown with blue field down in my yard. In article 4 of the U.S. Flag code this action is recognized as an international symbol of distress. I chose to take this action on 12 Nov 2020 as a result of thoughts of self harm that arose following the election on 4 Nov. I have not had these thoughts since 2010. The stem of this problem was my realization America is now headed to a full Socialism form of government....

  • President's Point: Holiday driving safety tips

    Calvin J. Packard|Dec 3, 2018

December is here! This means Christmas music in the air being played by the Rockford Theatre. It also means street decorations have been put in place by the New Rockford street crew— a thank you to them. December also means colder weather, cold vehicles and frosted windows. Please scrape all your vehicle windows to ensure complete visibility while driving. Speaking of driving, please drive for the three C's. 1) The Car. Your vehicle might be a 4 wheel drive, front wheel or rear wheel drive. A...

  • President's Point: November 2018

    Calvin J. Packard|Nov 5, 2018

November is here, and that means Thanksgiving. This often means travel, either for family coming home or going to visit family. Please plan road trips with weather in mind. Give yourself plenty of time to get to destination safely. Also plan for an unexpected stay if weather gets so bad you cannot continue to drive. Numerous roadway injuries and fatalities occur due to a driver trying to push his or her limits when fatigue and weather are against them. It would be better to arrive a day late...

  • President's Point: October 2018

    Calvin J. Packard|Oct 1, 2018

This month I want to talk about responsibility and personal perception. To quick cap my point, the New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation (NRABC) has come to the New Rockford City Commission with a preliminary proposal to purchase or build a facility for day care services, with a request for matching funds up to $50,000 from the city. Previously said in other editions of the President’s Point, there are three sides to any coin or any issue. MThere is the head side being one person’s point of...

  • Eddy County Museum to highlight military history with guest speakers

    Calvin J. Packard

Each year the Eddy County Museum creates a featured exhibit with a defined theme. This year’s theme is military history, and the exhibit features various items such as attire, memorabilia and service awards that date as far back as the nineteenth century.   To complement the exhibit, the Eddy County Museum board of directors plans to host guest speakers from within the community, as there are several area citizens who served during significant events in U.S. military history. These special gue...

  • Efforts to address bullying, mental health ongoing

    Calvin J. Packard, Eddy County Community Cares|Jun 11, 2018

This submission is being done on behalf of the Eddy County Community Cares (ECCC), the suicide prevention group active in the New Rockford and Sheyenne communities. Although school is done, the topic of bullying is not a done deal. We often think of bullying as a school issue, yet this act is evident among adults as well. Many psychologists state that experiencing bullying, particularly in adolescence, affects the sense of self-worth, also known as self-esteem. So when a child who was bullied...

  • President's Point: February 2018

    Calvin J. Packard|Feb 5, 2018

This is used from my February 2017 Presidents Point, yet it is still relevant.   February is the shortest month, so I chose a short story to emphasize my point for this month: communication.   This story starts in Somalia on December 4, 1992 when U.S. President George H. Bush ordered American forces into Somalia. The units landed, and there were questions about the use of force and what our forces could and could not do. The question and answer session lead to a policy known as the rules of eng...

  • President's Point: January 2018

Calvin J. Packard, President, New Rockford City Commission|Jan 1, 2018

January is upon us. We still have a few months of cold and snow ahead. Many will enjoy the outdoors by either ice fishing, snowmobiling or other winter activities outside. Please be safe.  Let us all start this new year off with a mindset of peace and friendship towards one another. We each have at our disposal to be nice or to be mean towards our neighbor. I ask that we as New Rockford citizens help our neighbor. This can be as simple as opening a door for him or her. It can involve a phone c...
