Hello to all. We have just finished the statistical worst period for suicide. National statistics show the holidays are when a higher percentage of suicides occur. Part of the mission of the Eddy County Community Cares is suicide prevention. This is the reason for us in the ECCC to promote the formation of a support group for suicide attempt survivors. One of the worst statistics of survivors of a self-attempt of suicide is that only one out of four die a natural death. This does not mean the three die by suicide. It shows that these three pers...
January is here! This means statistically we the citizens of New Rockford have cleared a hurdle notorious for suicidal behavior. National statistics show more suicides are carried out over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Now why am I writing a Presidents Point on suicide? Since the winter of 2016, New Rockford City Commission joined with other cities throughout North Dakota to take part in a program titled North Dakota Cares. This program was initiated by the former First Lady of North Dakota Mrs. Dalrymple. The programs intent was t...
The death of Senator John McCain has me thinking about the word, perspective. I was once asked, how many sides to a coin? The answer is three: the head, the tail and the rough edges. The point is this- there is your perspective, the other person's perspective and the truth. Perspective is the reality of the holder, and may not be 100 percent all factual, because there are these things called feelings that get involved in perception. To most, Senator McCain was an honorable man and military...
The annual Life Savers in the Park event, the beginning of school and also the start of harvest are all things we associate with August here in the New Rockford and Sheyenne community. First we have the Life Savers in the Park event on August 9, which is sponsored by the Community Ambulance Service of New Rockford. School starts on August 21, bringing the appearance of young children around the school. They may be walking safely to and from school or be darting between cars and busses. Please drive with care and diligence when near the school....
There is a lot going on in New Rockford as of late. We were fortunate to have two new stores open this year. Casey's and the Dollar General are two new additions to our business community, and we welcome them. The road construction on U.S. Highway 281 is scheduled to begin this year as well. We have a special meeting for the community of New Rockford concerning the proposed water project which will involve the replacement the water lines throughout the town, a repainting of the water tower’s interior and exterior and the modernization of the w...
As I thought about what to write this month, several thoughts ran through my head. I could have written about why our country appears to be so divided on issues such as anti-gun vs. pro-gun, pro-choice vs. pro-life, big government vs. small government. If you mention any of these topics to a room of 50 people of voting age, you will likely find 50 percent taking a stance against the other half. This gave me a light bulb moment for my topic for May: Are you part of the problem or part of the solution? Name a problem, any problem. Let’s say h...
This year, the first day of A will bring Easter celebrations. For many folks, Easter means time with family! Easter is a time of renewal, and it is also a time to reflect on one’s life. We in New Rockford are lucky to have a community that continues to give back. Be it our volunteers in the Ambulance Department or the Fire Department, or the civic organizations such as the Lions, Eagles, American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. Each one has done something to strengthen New Rockford. The most recent example being the fundraiser at the E...
March is here and although winter seems to be gone, an ice storm or even late blizzard can still hit us. This point is made not to further depress those who are looking forward to spring, merely to caution all from putting away the winter survival equipment. Items you may have at home and at the ready in the event of a power loss should include: a flashlight, spare, charged batteries, candles with matches, at least three gallons of drinking water and at least three days of ready-to-eat foodstuff. Examples of these foodstuffs would be canned...
