  • Woodchucks hand NR-S first loss

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 14, 2020

As advertised, the early-season matchup between Nine-Man Region 2 title hopefuls NR-S and St. John lived up to its billing. But for the Rockets, it didn’t end up being a question of how many points they scored, but when they scored them. A first-half track meet gave way to the Woodchucks’ defense stiffening up in the second, and the home gridmen got the two touchdowns necessary for a 42-36 win over the Rockets in the foothills of the Turtle Mountains Friday night, Sept. 4. Both teams, rec...

  • Rockets lose one, win one in week one action

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 7, 2020

by Erik Gjovik NR-S went 1-1 in a pair of matches to begin the volleyball season on August 31 and Sept. 1, taking on Thompson and Medina/Pingree-Buchanan. The Rockets had some tough sledding against the Tommies, falling in straight sets at home (11-25, 12-25, 14-25), but rebounded for a three-set win against the Thunder in Pingree, 25-18, 26-24 and 25-16. Senior Kayahna Hopfauf was the leader in kills both nights, hitting down four against Thompson and 13 versus M-P-B. Chloe Heinz added eight...

  • Dynamic duo leads Rockets over Bearcats

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 7, 2020

If one blinked in the second quarter of NR-S' second game of the season against the North Star Bearcats, they might have missed three touchdowns. A 56-point quarter output for both teams livened up what was a 6-0 score after the first 12 minutes, but in the end, it was the Rockets who prevailed, 50-34, in Cando Friday night, August 28. For the Rockets, now 2-0 in both Nine-Man Region 2 and the overall standings, it was the "Johnny and Kaden Show" starting in that wild second stanza. After...

  • Rockets roll over Benson County in debut

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 31, 2020

The return to high school sports, at least as it happened at Jim Johnson Field in New Rockford Friday, August 21, couldn't have been better for the team playing within its boundaries. In their first NDHSAA-sanctioned sporting event since the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March cancelled all school activities for the remainder of 2019-20, the NR-S Rockets rolled to a 62-0 shutout over the Benson County Wildcats. Even with the graduation of reigning 9-man Senior Athlete of the Year Bo Belquist,...

  • Heinz opens cross country season with top 10 finish

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 31, 2020

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets ran in their first official cross country race of the season, the Hillsboro Invitational, on Saturday, August 22. With three runners, NR-S had one top 10 finisher, that being Chloe Heinz in the varsity girls' race. Heinz took seventh with a time of 21 minutes, 14 seconds. In additional varsity results, Katie Allmaras took home 34th place in 24:53. Both varsity competitions were 5,000-meter races. The Rockets' one boy runner on the roster this season, Vinnie...

  • Guidelines for return to sports in fall presented to NDHSAA

    Erik Gjovik, Foster County Independent|Jun 15, 2020

by Erik Gjovik Foster County Independent Nearly three months have passed since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of all high school extracurricular activities across the country. As a result, state sports governing bodies throughout the country are weighing their options to get their athletes back in the game in time for the fall season, but with better protection against the spread of the potentially-deadly virus. The North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) was...

  • Schaefer takes second in Fargo golf tourney

    Erik Gjovik, Foster County Independent|Jun 15, 2020

New Rockford’s Ben Schaefer, a recent NR-S graduate, was deprived of his final high school golf season this spring. But he didn’t let his swing get too rusty. Schaefer, who will play the sport at the University of Jamestown starting next year, shot an 18-hole score of 83 to tie for second place among Class B competitors at the High School Senior Golf Invitational, held at Fargo Country Club Monday, June 8. The event was sponsored by Bell Bank. He received a gift certificate for $50 for his hig...

  • Train carrying grain derails in Carrington Sunday

    Erik Gjovik, Foster County Independent|May 4, 2020

A Canadian Pacific Railroad train carrying grain derailed in the Carrington city limits between the 6th Ave. North crossing and the Highways 52-200 overpass just southeast of the Central City Grain elevator early Sunday morning, April 26. The incident occurred just before 7:00 a.m. when around 20 cars on the 100-unit train came off the tracks, with many of those coming to rest beneath the overpass. Andy Cummings, a spokesperson for CP, said that no injuries were reported, no hazardous materials...

  • New mobile app could be game-changer in virus fight

    Erik Gjovik, Foster County Independent|Apr 27, 2020

The renowned traveling abilities of NDSU Bison football fans may have indirectly helped to provide inspiration for the latest tool to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state. Care19, a new location-tracing mobile phone app created by the inventor of the locally-famous "Bison Tracker," documents users' recent close contacts from city to city should they contract COVID-19, in order to track down the disease's transmission with greater precision. Jackie Schroeder, a Carr...

  • Duchscherer finishes third at State Wrestling

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 2, 2020

NR-S sophomore Matthew Duchscherer took home a third place finish at the State Class B Individual Wrestling Tournament in Fargo Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 20-22. Competing for the Carrington program, Matthew, wrestling in the 120-pound weight class after taking fifth at 106 pounds last season, completed a 25-8 season and helped the Cardinals to a fifth-place team finish in the individual portion of the event with 126 team points. Of that total, he was responsible for scoring 19.5 on his own....

  • Rockets end season with win, defeat Dunseith again in regional play-in

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 18, 2019

In the last three days of the 2019 regular season, the NR-S Rocket volleyball team got pretty well acquainted with the Dunseith Dragons. One match came about when it did as a weather postponement, the other for one team’s right to keep their season alive in the Region 4 Volleyball Tournament in Devils Lake starting this past Monday. The Rockets put a bow on Super Region play with a 3-1 win over the fire-breathers, 20-25, 25-13, 25-13 and 25-16, on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Dunseith, and delivered a...

  • NR-S grad McKnight finishes second season with VCSU

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 18, 2019

Valley City State University sophomore Joshua McKnight has made a name for himself as a small school athlete contributing for the NAIA's Vikings. The New Rockford-Sheyenne graduate and son of John and Kelly McKnight finished up his second season playing for longtime VCSU Head Coach Dennis McCulloch, and helped VCSU finish with a 7-3 regular season playing in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA). McKnight, a 5'11", 175-pound running back, played in 10 games for the Vikings, making two...

  • NR-S net campaign ends with sweep by Wildcats

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 18, 2019

New Rockford-Sheyenne may have gotten their tickets to the ball, but their stay on the dance floor was unfortunately short-lived. The Benson County Wildcats took three sets from the Rockets, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-18, to finish the NR-S volleyball campaign in the opening round of the Region 4 Tournament at the Devils Lake Sports Center Monday night, Nov. 11. Kayahna Hopfauf had six kills for the Rockets in the loss, with two players, Hannah Haley and McKayla Waldo, each accounting for four....

  • Sweep for NR-S over Knights

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 11, 2019

The Rockets traveled to McVille Monday, Nov. 4, and came home from the regional contest with something to celebrate. The Rockets took a three-set sweep over the Dakota Prairie Knights by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 26-24 that night, November 4, to improve to 12-16 on the season, 6-4 in Super Region 4 and 12-8 in regional points. Senior Hannah Haley's effort was highlighted by 11 kills. Kennedy Demester lofted six ace serves in the victory, and three blocks apiece were had by Kayahna Hopfauf and M...

  • Rocket netters drop pair to Rolla, North Star

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 11, 2019

Two hard-fought losses in Super Region 4 play for the NR-S Rockets have knocked them into the unenviable position of having to play in one of the four play-in matches this past Friday night. Having sat in the top four spots for much of the season, the Rockets took a marathon 3-2 (18-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-14, 10-15) loss to Rolla on Oct. 31, then fell to league second place team North Star in four sets (25-22, 22-25, 16-25, 15-25) in a Friday night, Nov. 1 make-up match from Oct. 15. Those...

  • Ihry's big game for F-S-H-P ends Rockets' season

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 11, 2019

One of the most frustrating and demoralizing aspects of defensive football, whether it be as a player, coach or fan, is knowing exactly what play is coming, and who's going to carry the ball, and being powerless to stop it. In a nutshell, that's what Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page's workhorse running back Jack Ihry did to the NR-S Rocket defense. The 6'1", 215-pound senior, two-time All-Stater and UND recruit cut through the visitors' defenders to the tune of a mind-boggling 377 yards on 48 carries...

  • Rockets rout Tigers in 9-man playoff

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 4, 2019

It's one of the goals good football teams work for all year, the right to host a playoff game. It didn't quite work out as planned on the NR-S Rockets' end, but the team's adopted home turf at Farmers Union Field in Casselton ended up being a much more stable surface for one of the Nine-Man division's title contenders to show their stuff than the standing water blanketing Jim Johnson Field back home would have been. The Rockets began their journey towards the Dakota Bowl with a 60-14 win over...

  • Volleyball: Mustangs sweep Rockets

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 4, 2019

Two teams hoping to right their respective ships down the home stretch of the Class B volleyball season met up in New Rockford this past Monday night to butt heads. On this evening, the Midkota Mustangs put together the points they needed to garner a 25-22, 25-11 and 25-20 sweep over the NR-S Rockets in the NR-S Gym. The Rockets, now 11-14 on the campaign, had five kills from Hannah Haley and four more by Kayahna Hopfauf in the loss, and Hopfauf also added five blocks and McKayla Waldo three....

  • Rockets wipe the floor with Comets

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 4, 2019

The NR-S Rockets maintained their important top four positioning in the Super Region 4 standings table with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-21) victory at the expense of the Rolette-Wolford Comets in New Rockford Thursday night, Oct. 24. Coach Sara Myhre’s club, hopeful of consistent play over the last two weeks of the regular season, aims to secure one of the quartet of automatic berths to the Region 4 Tournament in Devils Lake beginning on Monday, Nov. 11. The fifth through 12th seeds at the end of t...

  • Rockets burn Dragons

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 28, 2019

The experience of looking like pigs rolling around in the barnyard muck in Cavalier, not to mention the fun time players' mothers had washing uniforms afterwards, were enough for NR-S to prioritize good footing for their regular season-ending contest with Dunseith. So, a game originally slated for New Rockford was moved to the synthetic surface of Duane Carlson Field at Minot High School, and the Rockets responded with another offensive explosion in their 70-12 win over the Dragons Saturday...

  • NR-S wins one of four matches at Carrington tourney

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 28, 2019

They had to wait one extra week to finish it, but the NR-S Rockets joined 11 other teams participating in the Carrington Varsity Tournament Saturday, Oct. 19. The local netters finished with a record of 1-3, taking a split-set win against Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier in Pool C by a 48-42 (23-25, 25-17) final score, but falling in two other games to eventual third place team Rugby (21-25, 16-25) and Medina/Pingree-Buchanan (17-25, 14-25). NR-S entered tournament play as the number nine seed, and fell...

  • Rockets fall in OT at Cavalier Mud Bowl

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 21, 2019

The consensus top two teams in Nine-Man football in the state of North Dakota met on a sopping wet and slippery field in Cavalier last Tuesday night, Oct. 15, for the right to be this year's Region 2 champions. And it took until after the regulation horn sounded to come up with that verdict. The NR-S Rockets and Cavalier Tornadoes matched each other punch for punch with a 14-14 score at the end of four quarters, but Tanner Urlaub's two-point conversion after his own six-yard touchdown run in...

  • Rockets take five to beat FW-M

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 21, 2019

The NR-S Rockets boarded the bus following a five-set marathon Super Region win in Fort Totten Monday, Oct. 14, but the mood was more of relief than celebratory. That may have been because Coach Sara Myhre's group, in their hearts, might have overlooked the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Lady Indians and their winless season record of 0-10 to that juncture. Particularly concerning about the Rockets' 25-15, 22-25, 18-25, 25-13 and 15-5 victory was the fact that going into the match, the Lady Indians had...

  • Storm causes volleyball postponements

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 21, 2019

Mother Nature took a sledgehammer to area sports schedules, and the NR-S volleyball team was no exception to her wrath. The Rockets’ match originally slated on October 10 with Dunseith was moved to Tuesday, November 5, with junior high starting action at 5 p.m. and followed by junior varsity and varsity matches. Because of the scheduling conflict presented by the football team’s game with Cavalier moving to last Tuesday, another Super Region 4 match planned for that day with North Star in New...
