  • Rocket harriers at Souris Valley meet

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 21, 2019

In between bouts of nasty weather, whether it be rain or dense snow, the hardy NR-S cross country runners took to one of the bigger meets in the area on Saturday, Oct. 5. The Souris Valley Invitational in Minot drew over 250 runners for both the boys’ and girls’ varsity divisions. NR-S’ top finisher was junior Chloe Heinz, who earned a spot in the top 100 with a 90th place time of 22:18.28. Katie Allmaras, an eighth grader, took home 149th (24:02.83), and sophomore Mya Cudworth was 178th (25:5...

  • Locals defeat 'Chucks

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 14, 2019

Locals defeat ‘Chucks In need of a victory to move up the Region 4 table, the NR-S Rockets put a strong match together and defeated the St. John Woodchucks in three sets, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17, Thursday night, Oct. 3, at the NRSHS Gym. Kayahna Hopfauf hit 11 kills in the victory, while McKayla Waldo and Brianna Price stifled the St. John hitters with 11 combined blocks. Along with Hopfauf’s big game, Hannah Haley had seven kills and Price four more. The Rocket offense rode high thanks to 25 ass...

  • NR-S Rockets shut out Comets

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 14, 2019

It's remarkable what a few defensive adjustments can do. After giving up over 200 rushing yards the week before against Nelson County, the NR-S Rockets decided that area of their game was in most need of shoring up. And, against a run-heavy opponent in 5-1 North Prairie, it was the perfect time to show what they'd learned. The yards still came for the Cougars, but most importantly, the points most decidedly did not. The Rocket defense kept a quality opponent off the scoreboard in a 52-0 whitewas...

  • NR-S swats Hornets in four

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2019

The first jump into Super Region 4 volleyball for NR-S was a successful one, even though it wasn't a clean sheet in the end for the Rockets. Coach Sara Myhre's club took the first two sets from the Harvey-Wells Co. Hornets, 25-20 and 25-19, but took a stunning 30-28 loss in set three with the visitors' backs against the wall. The sudden momentum swing didn't matter in the end. NR-S came out like gangbusters in the fourth set, taking 11 of the first 12 points and rolling past the Hornets for a...

  • Rockets triumph over Chargers

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2019

Lost in another avalanche of points for the NR-S Rockets in their most recent win, was somewhat of a concerning performance in rushing defense. Though the top-ranked team in Nine-Man football for another week kept it that way with a 64-26 triumph over the Nelson County Chargers Friday, Sept. 27 in Lakota, final stat lines were very much deceiving. NR-S, in spite of getting big play after big play in the opening three quarters, were actually outgained in total offense by the Chargers, 348-335,...

  • Rockets go distance, but can't close on 'Cats

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2019

All four levels of volleyball for NR-S and Benson County managed a rare feat in Maddock last Tuesday, Oct. 1, as each team’s match lasted until their final deciding set and race to 15 points. The Rockets took the junior high, C-squad and junior varsity games by 2-1 final set scores, and the Wildcats had their eye on the big prize in the varsity showdown. Both Region 4 rivals alternated set wins in the first four sets, but Benson County sent NR-S to their third five-set loss this season, 2...

  • Devils Lake tournament recap

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 7, 2019

NR-S won one of their four matches at the Devils Lake Tournament Saturday, Sept. 28. The Rockets had a record of 1-2 in pool play. They took a 23-25, 20-25 loss to the Devils Lake Firebirds’ junior varsity, followed that up with a two-set win over the Bottineau Stars, 25-22 and 25-19, and lost to Region 4 foe St. John on aggregate score, taking the first set, 25-16, but dropping the second, 14-25. A rematch with Bottineau came about in bracket play, but NR-S came up short in a 2-1 loss, 1...

  • Rockets pour it on in waterlogged Homecoming

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2019

In football, the thought has traditionally been that in torrential downpour conditions, a team's passing game would suffer the most. But for New Rockford-Sheyenne, it was just a leisurely walk in the rain. Quarterback Johnny Grann threw for 260 yards, completing 11 of his 13 attempts, and Bo Belquist had two touchdowns through the air and one on special teams to help the Rockets triumph over the North Border Eagles in a waterlogged Homecoming game Friday night, Sept. 20, by the score of 48-6....

  • Cardinals trounce Rockets

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 30, 2019

The latest edition of the Carrington/NR-S volleyball rivalry has concluded, and the Rockets will go back to the drawing board to fix some of their deficiencies. Carrington, who came into the match at 4-0 having not dropped a set to that point, kept that unblemished distinction intact with a 3-0 (11-25, 14-25, 10-25) defeat of NR-S at the East Gym on the CHS campus Thursday night, Sept. 19. The Rockets couldn't penetrate the Cardinals' stout blocking game at the net, as the homestanding Cards...

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets and numerous area schools competed in the Grahams Island Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday morning, Sept. 14, which was hosted by Devils Lake High School. As part of the girls’ varsity five-kilometer race, junior Chloe Heinz came in 14th place overall out of 54 contestants with a time of 22 minutes, 56.34 seconds. Mya Cudworth, a sophomore, was 40th in 26:56.41. The middle schoolers raced at the 3,000-meter (3K) distance, and NR-S eighth grader Katie A...

  • Rockets come up short in five-set marathon

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 23, 2019

Back at the net for their second regulation match of the season, the NR-S Rockets found themselves once again in a five-set match, this time against the Lady Bison of Barnes County North in rural Leal Thursday, September 12. And, just like their first outing, it went to the opposition, in a 25-27, 15-25, 25-22, 25-15, 12-15 loss that dropped the Rocket girls to 3-4 on the early fall campaign. Trailing two sets to none in the match, the Rockets battled back with a three-point win in the third...

  • NR-S netters finish 2nd at Lakota Tournament

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 16, 2019

New Rockford-Sheyenne won three out of their five matches at the Lakota Varsity Tournament on Saturday, September 7, and came home with the second place trophy. The Rockets took a two-set win in pool play over the Rolla Bulldogs (25-24, 25-18). In the other two abbreviated matches to 25 points, NR-S got splits with the Midkota Mustangs and Devils Lake Firebirds junior varsity, but were defeated by the Mustangs on points, 47-38, and took a 49-35 aggregate to beat the Firebirds. With six pool...

  • No. 1 ranked Rockets remain undefeated

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 16, 2019

Slow and steady may win the race, as the fable "The Tortoise and the Hare" has proven time and time again. In this instance, however, the hare put his head down and kicked it into overdrive, leaving nothing to chance or cocksure attitude. The top-ranked and unbeaten New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets remained that way by bending, but not breaking, against the unrelenting ground game of the fifth-ranked St. John Woodchucks, taking a 42-18 win to further solidify their spot atop Nine-Man Region 2...

  • Rockets blast Bearcats

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 9, 2019

The traditional team walk across the railroad tracks to Jim Johnson Field set the scene for a phenomenally-successful home opener for the NR-S Rocket football team in 2019. The Rockets scored 66 first half points, and took off the gas in the second half while the defense did the rest of the work in recording a 74-0 shutout over the North Star Bearcats Friday night, August 30. Statistical comparisons went all NR-S' way, outgaining North Star by an eye-popping 436-11 margin in total yardage. Much...

  • Thunder strikes Rockets in roller coaster five-set match

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 9, 2019

Sara Myhre's first match at the head of the NR-S Rockets was certainly a memorable one, even if the end result wasn't in her team's favor. NR-S took the first two sets against non-region foe Medina-Pingree-Buchanan, but the Thunder rallied back from the brink of defeat to take the next three and shock the Rockets at the NR-S Gym, 21-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-11 and 15-12. It was the season opener for both teams. Each team went point-for-point in the first set, and were knotted at 20-20 before the...

  • Harriers compete at Northwood, Carrington

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 9, 2019

NR-S' cross country team had several quick trips around state golf courses in the past week's worth of meets, competing in Northwood on Aug. 29 and at the Carrington Invitational at CrossRoads Golf Course this past Tuesday, Sept. 3. In Northwood, the Rockets had four top-25 times in their various divisions, led by junior varsity girls' competitor Katie Allmaras in eighth place out of 44 runners in 14:09 for the 3,000-kilometer race. Teammate Kaiya O'Connor took home 21st in the JV race as well...

  • NR-S runners begin year at 'Orr'iginals Invite

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 2, 2019

The five runners in the NR-S cross country program got their season underway with the ‘Orr’iginals Invitational at Parkhurst Recreation Area just north of Jamestown Saturday, August 24. In individual placing, the top performance came from junior Chloe Heinz, who finished in 24th place overall out of 61 varsity girls’ runners with a time of 23:25.71 over the five-kilometer course. Sophomore Mya Cudworth came in 54th in 27:41.68. The Rockets had a pair of junior varsity girls compete as well....

  • Rockets open with a "W" over Wildcats

    Erik Gjovik|Sep 2, 2019

From the tweet of the referee's whistle, New Rockford-Sheyenne established dominance in their return to the football field for the season opener in Maddock Friday night, August 23. The Rockets, ranked as the number one team in the North Dakota Nine-Man preseason poll, gave the voters no indication of their offense slowing down with 44 first-quarter points in a 58-16 rout over Benson County. One of the biggest questions coming into 2019 was the presence of a new signal-caller at the quarterback...

  • Schaefer hones skills in summer golf circuit

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 26, 2019

New Rockford-Sheyenne senior Ben Schaefer concluded a successful summer golf tournament schedule on the PGA Junior Circuit in Minnesota. Ben, the son of Monty and Tori Schaefer of New Rockford, has competed in tournaments in the Gopher State for two years now. He participates in the Minnesota section of the PGA, which includes North and South Dakota. During his first year of play in 2018, Schaefer played well enough in 11 Junior Series events (ages 16-19) to qualify for the Players Series this...

  • American Legion tourney roundup July 24-27 at Carrington

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 5, 2019

Stout pitching performances carried the Post 30 Black Sox of New Rockford during the meat of the District 4 Legion tournament in Carrington held July 24-27. Following a 14-0 win over Wishek/Linton in the first round, the 'Sox needed the bare minimum of offense to get past Cando, 1-0, but ran into traditional foe Carrington's buzzsaw in a 4-0 shutout loss. Post 30 rebounded with a 6-3 win to eliminate Kidder County Post 231, and advance to the championship series with Carrington (see related...

  • Carrington beats 'Sox for District 4 title- Advances to State B in Hazen

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 5, 2019

Editor's note: In the print edition of this story, the headline erroneously stated "Post 30 beats 'Sox." It should read "Post 25 beats 'Sox," as Carrington advanced to the state tournament. The online edition has been corrected. We apologize for the error. The 2019 regular seasons in both the Class B high school and American Legion campaigns borne out the conclusion that Carrington and SNR played at a level above their local competition. So it came to pass that the two longtime baseball rivals,...

  • Black Sox finish 4th in State Class B Babe Ruth Tournament after 4 games played over 3 days

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 5, 2019

SNR may have bowed out of the State B Babe Ruth Tournament in Watford City after three days, but the future of baseball in Eddy County looks bright indeed, judging by how they fared among the state's small-town baseball programs. The young 'Sox took home fourth place at this year's event after taking a 16-4 loss in loser-out play to the Casselton Black Stockings Sunday evening, July 28, and finished their season with a 19-4 record. "Casselton came out and hit the ball around the whole field," Co...

  • Hooking a big fish: SNR survives error-filled opener, edges Watford City Walleyes

    Erik Gjovik|Aug 5, 2019

The best baseball facility the Bakken oil boom could buy awaited the SNR Black Sox Babe Ruth team for their first Class B State Tournament appearance in 17 years. An artificial turf field adjacent to the sparkling $100-plus million dollar Rough Rider Center in the eastern foothills on the edge of Watford City served as the showpiece for the host club as they took on the Black Sox in the final game of the day Friday night, July 26. In a back-and-forth affair that wasn't as clean as SNR Coach...
