  • Heartbreak for Sox in extra-inning region championship

    Erik Gjovik|May 27, 2019

With the time reaching just after 6:30 p.m. in Steele, the valiant three-game run for the SNR Black Sox to try and topple Region 3 power Carrington finally ran out of juice. And, considering where they came from to get there and the multiple opportunities they had to close the Cardinals out, the dejected walk off Pirate Field was even more stinging. The 'Sox and Cards engaged in two wild championship games, but Carrington earned the right to play in the State B Tournament for the fifth straight...

  • Younger Belquist qualifies for state

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2019

Someone forgot to tell Kelsie Belquist about the line of thinking that seventh graders aren't supposed to do what she's currently doing in varsity track and field. Several weeks of performances at or near the top of the standings in her chosen events make for good copy, but Belquist hadn't quite accomplished the ultimate goal of state meet qualification. Everything came together for the NR-S youngster at the Panther Booster Invitational in Rugby this past Monday, May 13, as Belquist qualified...

  • SNR earns two wins at Enderlin/Cass Jamboree

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2019

Rain kept the SNR Black Sox from completing their three-game obligations, but they still managed to get two quality victories at the Enderlin/Central Cass Jamboree Friday, May 10. In action played at Casselton, SNR earned a 4-3 victory against the Northern Cass Jaguars, behind Nathan Holzwarth’s complete game pitching performance. They then took on the historically-strong Grafton Spoilers, and rode another great outing by Tucker Longnecker to take a 3-1 win. A planned game against the S...

  • Sox secure #2 seed in Region 3 tourney

    Erik Gjovik|May 20, 2019

Carrington scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning of their second Region 3 matchup of the season with the SNR Black Sox. Though the 'Sox scored two runs in the fifth to make things interesting, the visitors were flummoxed by Cardinal pitcher Kyle Leapaldt's fastball to the tune of 14 strikeouts, and went home with a narrow 3-2 defeat Thursday afternoon, May 9, at Carrington's City Park. Leapaldt, a returning All-State player for the Cards, scattered five hits in their victory to...

  • JUMPING IN HIS SHOES: Belquist breaks records in triple jump wearing uncle's shoes

    Erik Gjovik|May 13, 2019

As Spike Lee's character in the Nike Air Jordan commercial spots from the late 1980's asserted, "It's gotta be the shoes." Bo Belquist dug into his closet to retrieve the magic spikes his uncle Alex used to set the New Rockford standard in the triple jump back in 2004. He laced the golden kicks up at the CNDC Outdoor Track Meet in Rugby last Tuesday, let himself get airborne with a hop, skip and jump, and listened for the event marshal's distance. Forty-three feet, nine and one-quarter inches....

  • Rockets 4th at Carrington Kiwanis/Lions meet

    Erik Gjovik|May 13, 2019

For the first time in a three-year span, Carrington High School played host to a track meet, welcoming 10 teams to the slightly breezy Kiwanis/Lions Meet Saturday, May 4, under cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 50's. The long layoff between events at the Stadium '76 complex was due to construction of the new elementary school in Carrington, which started classes this past fall just a few hundred meters north of the track. Because of the project, the traditional throwing event staging...

  • Black Sox win one of three at SNR Jamboree

    Erik Gjovik|May 6, 2019

Day one of their home weekend baseball showcase at Jim Johnson Park was a resounding success for the SNR Black Sox, but once Saturday rolled around, good mojo was hard to come by. The 'Sox scored early and late to take a 13-5 victory over the Rugby Panthers on Friday, April 26, but ran into tough opposition in the form of Region 4 state tournament contenders Park River/Fordville-Lankin and Langdon/Edmore/Munich, taking losses of 12-0 and 13-1 the following afternoon. • 'Sox make late rally, but fall to rival Cards

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 29, 2019

When central North Dakota athletic bragging rights are on the line, no lead, regardless of how cushy, can be considered sufficient. Carrington could have easily thought they were in the clear with a 9-2 advantage over the SNR Black Sox with just an inning-and-a-half to play last Monday, April 22, but the boys in black and silver had a few things up their polyester-knit sleeves. The 'Sox went through a pair of Cardinal pitchers in the final frames to score a five-spot in the sixth, but it wasn't...

  • Black Sox sweep Polar Bears

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 29, 2019

Though they walked eight Larimore batters and plunked two more, the SNR Black Sox pitchers worked around those difficulties to register an 9-4 nonregion road win over the Larimore Polar Bears on April 18. Colt Soderholm and Johnny Grann drew hill duties for the first game of a varsity/JV doubleheader, and overcame wildness to give up just one Larimore hit in the contest. Grann, along with Luke Ystaas, each went 2-for-3 in the victory to pace the ‘Sox in their nine-hit effort. Teddy Allmaras d...

Bo Belquist became the Rockets' first automatic state qualifier, winning the triple jump with a 42'4" effort that exceeded the 41'6" provisional...

  • Several firsts for Belquist at CNDC Indoor

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 15, 2019

NR-S’ Bo Belquist hopes that his first successful outing in his signature event, the triple jump, is a sign of good things to come his way this spring. Belquist soared to a personal-best effort of 42 feet, 11 1/4 inches to win that competition, and also took home first in the 400-meter dash in 55.41 seconds at the Central North Dakota Conference (CNDC) Indoor Track Meet Friday, April 5. Allmaras worked the first four innings for the Sox, and Belquist the remaining three to pick up the save. Coach Elliott Belquist's...

  • Rocket girls open track season in sixth place

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 1, 2019

At the State Class B Indoor Meet at NDSU’s Shelly Ellig Complex in Fargo, the Rockets scored 33 team points in the girls’ race to finish in sixth place overall, while the boys earned nine for 18th place. With a result of that decision from the NDHSAA, the Rockets faced fourth-seeded Minot Bishop Ryan, also sporting a 22-3 overall record, i...

  • We are the (Region 4) Champions!

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 18, 2019

Above the din of the crowd, and just as the NR-S Rockets took the floor, the public address system at the Devils Lake Sports Center played a familiar song. The smash viral meme hit "Numa Numa," made famous by the 2005 state championship run, served notice that the slight underdog Rockets meant business Thursday night, March 7. It was a good omen. NR-S played an almost flawless first half in taking a five-point lead over the fourth-ranked Four Winds-Minnewaukan Indians, and made play after play d...

  • Third time's a charm: Rockets head to State 'B'

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 11, 2019

When the free-wheeling style the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets have displayed to great success this season suddenly runs into the rough-and-tumble world of elimination basketball, second and third scoring options are often needed to come to the forefront. Six-foot-two senior post Tucker Longnecker provided that and much more in the first game of the Region 4 Boys' Basketball Tournament, scoring 21 points to lead the Rockets to a 56-41 victory over Langdon/Edmore/Munich last Monday night, March...
