  • Cardinals conquer Rockets in Carrington

    Erik Gjovik|Dec 20, 2021

The varsity court experience deficit between the NR-S Rockets and Carrington Cardinals was fairly vast coming into the 2021-22 boys' basketball opening game. The Cards began their third season with largely the same roster, following records of 3-18 and 7-14 in the previous two campaigns, while the Rockets returned only two varsity contributors from last year's 15-8 team. However, it was a newcomer to the CHS roster, Josh Bickett, who made the most lasting impression in the 62-31 win for the...

  • Cards go 1-3 in home duals; take 4th at Al Larson tourney

    Erik Gjovik|Dec 20, 2021

The CHS wrestling team had their struggles in the Carrington Duals on Friday night, December 10, the event traditionally preceding the Al Larson Invitational. The Cards dropped decisions of 31-24 to the Minot Magicians, 52-14 against Class B contender New Salem-Almont, and a tough 39-31 Region 2 loss to Pembina County North in the nightcap. In between, Carrington rolled to a 59-12 win against the out-manned Napoleon Imperials. The losses dropped the Cards' overall record in head-to-head outings...

  • Berglund named to Class 9B Second Team All-State

    Erik Gjovik|Dec 13, 2021

Nick Berglund was the tallest target in the passing game for NR-S, along with one of the Rockets' top edge rushers on defense. And now, the 6'4", 216-pound wide receiver/defensive end has been recognized with elevation to the highest honor Class 9B can bestow upon he and his peers. Berglund was named to the Second Team of the North Dakota High School Coaches Association (NDHSCA) Class 9B All-State squad. Season statistics for the senior include 42 solo and 38 assisted tackles, eight sacks and...

  • Duchscherer takes second place, CHS first in Velva

    Erik Gjovik|Dec 13, 2021

Seven matches in the space of two days is a tall task for any individual wrestler. That’s what awaited much of the 17-team field at the Velva Invitational Tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3 and 4. However, the Carrington Cardinals powered through that early conditioning test, winning four weight classes and advancing to two other championship matches to score 373 points for the team title. Minot Bishop Ryan, with 326 points, came in second and Northern Lights (Rolla/Rolette/St. John) scored...

  • 100 wins

    Erik Gjovik|Dec 6, 2021

If nothing else, NR-S senior and Carrington wrestler Matthew Duchscherer has a great sense of timing. Duchscherer's night in the spotlight at the NR-S High School Gym on Tuesday, November 23, featured him attaining a personal milestone. The 132-pounder took his 100th career victory in a first-period pin over Oakes' Noah Wood. It was one of five falls the Cardinals would get in a 48-33 win over the Tornadoes to start the dual portion of their season. The two teams exchanged pins and forfeits in...

  • A Rocket...in Red

    Erik Gjovik|Nov 15, 2021

The Cardinal wrestling mats will be making a bit of a road trip eight days from now, 16 miles to New Rockford, for Carrington's "home" opener in the NR-S Gym against the Oakes Tornadoes. It wasn't something that Coach Josh Kerbaugh's program had to do, but what they felt they should do to recognize the contributions of one of their most dedicated grapplers. Rocket senior Matthew Duchscherer has wrestled for the Carrington program since third grade when he began with the Pitcrew youth team, and w...

    Erik Gjovik|Oct 25, 2021

For the first time in nearly 46 years, the Foster County Independent has changed hands to new ownership. Amy Wobbema, publisher and sole owner of the New Rockford Transcript and Transcript Publishing, has assumed the editor/publisher position at the Independent from long-time owners Allen V. Erik Gjovik, Foster County Independent|Sep 27, 2021

Due to the threat of community spread from the Delta variant of COVID-19, CHI St. Alexius Health – Carrington Medical Center and Golden Acres Manor and Estates in Carrington have enacted visitor restrictions. No visitors are currently allowed within the CHI Carrington complex, while Golden Acres has guidelines in place for who is allowed to visit their residents, how many visitors they can receive, and at certain times. Erik Gjovik|Jul 19, 2021

The North Dakota Lions All-Star Basketball Series, pitting the best graduated senior players from Classes A and B against one another, returned to the floor in 2021, after a year away due to COVID-19. NR-S' Evan Ulrich and Carrington's Hannah Hagel, both committed to play for their respective basketball programs at the University of Jamestown, participated in the series. In the first games, held at Bismarck's Legacy High School on Monday night, July 12, Hagel and Ulrich each scored four points....

  • Ruthers' bats silenced in loss to Carrington

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 28, 2021

New Rockford's Babe Ruth team traveled to Carrington on Friday, June 18, and their offense was held to just two hits in a 10-0 loss. Each hitting singles, in defeat for New Rockford, were Keaton Cudworth and Bradyn Collier. Cudworth also got the start on the mound, with Alex Weisenburger coming on in relief. The home-standing Redbirds, who improved to 3-1 with the win and could be a state tournament contender in Class B's District 6, scored five runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and...

  • Black Sox lose to South Border, defeat PR/F-L at Jamboree

    Erik Gjovik|May 3, 2021

The threat of inclement weather largely thwarted baseball teams' plans to attend the Carrington/SNR Jamboree April 23 and 24, but the Black Sox managed to split their two Saturday afternoon games. The first game was their planned home half of the Region 3 home-and-home series with South Border, and the Mustangs sprang a 5-4 upset over the 'Sox to drop SNR's league record to 0-4. In game two, the boys of the dark hose salvaged the weekend with an 8-4 win against the Park River/Fordville-Lankin...

Central’s hardball boys registered two wins (6-2 and 4-3) in the varsity and JV ranks over the SNR Black Sox.  Both games were played in Tolna, and the first game results improved the Mustangs’ record to 2-2 and 1-1 in Region 3 play. • Black Sox sweep HWC Hornets at home

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 26, 2021

Sheyenne-New Rockford pitcher Alex Harrison didn't have to worry about his fielders working too hard behind him. Fourteen strikeouts will do that, no question. Harrison scattered three runs over six innings of work, and Evan Ulrich worked the final three outs for the save to give SNR their first varsity victory of the spring, a 6-3 triumph over the HWC Hornets in New Rockford on April 16. The Hornet hurler, Tyson Tipton, was nearly up to the task in matching Harrison until the sixth inning,...

  • Loboes defeat Sox, lead region at 3-0

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 26, 2021

LaMoure/Litchville-Marion has taken the Region 3 universe by force early in the spring baseball season. The Loboes boosted their overall record to a perfect 4-0 and 3-0 in the regional standings, with a 5-1 defeat of SNR at Jim Johnson Park Tuesday afternoon, April 20. The bats for the Black Sox were cooled by a fine pitching performance from L-L-M sophomore Anthony Hanson, who sent seven SNR hitters down via strikeout. Three of those were caught looking for a 1-2-3 first inning, and the Sox...

  • Cardinals roll late, send SNR Black Sox to second loss

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 19, 2021

Both Carrington and SNR's aces were dealing early, but once the Black Sox went to their bullpen, the Cardinals jumped at the opportunity. The visitors to Jim Johnson Field from down south 16 miles, got a 13-4 win in the opening game of region three play on Friday afternoon, April 9, and three players did the share of the damage in the books. Grady Shipman, Austin Trelstad and Ethan Buskness all had three hits to combine for nine of Carrington's 13 base knocks, with Shipman doubling twice and...

  • Sox struggle in first series, fall to F-S-H-P

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 19, 2021

The big inning, or in this case, two of them, came back to bite the SNR Blacksox hard in their opening game of the high school baseball campaign. In Hope on Thursday, April 8, Finley-Sharon/Hope-Page scored 13 of their 15 runs in the final two innings, erasing a three-run ‘Sox advantage’ after an inning and a half, and rolling to a 15-5 win for the Spartans. Seven different F-S-H-P batters had hits and RBIs, as Grant Ihry and Owen Zerface each rapped out two hits in the Spartans’ column. Ihry...

  • Belquist shines in debut for UND Fighting Hawks

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 1, 2021

If New Rockford's Bo Belquist goes on to a long and productive career in FCS football with the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, he did it right from the start. Belquist, a three-time All-State receiver for the NR-S Rockets and the Nine-Man Senior Athlete of the Year in 2019, hit the ground running in the Fighting Hawks' spring football season opener Saturday afternoon, February 20, against the Southern Illinois Salukis. Playing in his first collegiate game, and the first game for the Hawks as a...

    Erik Gjovik|Mar 1, 2021

NR-S junior Matthew Duchscherer, son of Todd and Renae Duchscherer of New Rockford, placed second at 126 pounds at the State Class B Individual Wrestling Tournament in Fargo Thursday and Friday, February 18-19. Competing for the Carrington Cardinals as he has for the last several seasons, Duchscherer was competing in his third high school state tournament. This year was a bit different from past seasons at the State B, as there was no regional individual qualifying event due to COVID-19....

  • Rockets get win over Knights, fall to #2 Indians in district play

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 25, 2021

New Rockford-Sheyenne split a pair of District 7 games in this last week's action, finishing with a 64-34 win at the NRS-S Gym against Dakota Prairie and coming up on the losing end of a 73-53 score against second-ranked Four Winds-Minnewaukan in Fort Totten on January 15 and 18. The victory against the Knights came after a lackluster first half of basketball for the Rockets in which the teams were deadlocked at 22 all. That all changed in the third quarter, when NR-S blew the game wide open...

  • Duchscherer rules mats for Carrington

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 25, 2021

Matthew Duchscherer, a student at New Rockford-Sheyenne High School, is dominating on the high school wrestling mat thus far in 2020-21. The junior, who wrestles at 126 pounds for the Carrington Cardinals, is currently the top-ranked wrestler in the state at that weight class, and has yet to lose a match this season with a 16-0 individual record. He has been wrestling at the youth, junior high and high school levels for nine years, and is a two-time Class B individual tournament place winner,...

  • Girls fall to HWC, shoot lights out against Cavalier

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 25, 2021

New Rockford-Sheyenne had about as different of a two-game swing as a team could possibly have during this past week of girls' basketball action. On January 14, the Rockets couldn't get much of anything to fall in a 57-34 District 7 loss to Harvey-Wells County, but made up for that with an 83-59 shootout victory over the Cavalier Tornadoes in non-regional play on Tuesday, January 19. Both games were played at the NR-S Gym. In the opening contest, each team had issues finding the nets early,...

  • Rockets split with Rolla

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 18, 2021

Morgan Leas and Rylee Hanlan combined for 35 of the Rolla Bulldogs' 51 points to help them take a six-point home win over the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets to give the school near the border their first win of the season in five attempts. Five three-pointers from Kennedy Demester were ultimately not enough for NR-S in defeat, and those represented all 15 of her team-leading points. Mya Cudworth added 13 points for the Rockets. District 7 Girls' Basketball Friday January 8 Rolla 51, NR-S 45 at...

Mark Fassett's 16 points led Warwick (1-3, 0-1), while Cayden Feather finished with 12 for the Warriors. NR-S (5-3, 1-0) goes up to Fort Totten tonight (January 18) to face second-ranked Four...

  • Squirrels sweep Rockets

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 11, 2021

The Central Cass Squirrels came to NR-S for a girls' and boys' basketball doubleheder on December 29, and came away with wins over the Rockets in both instances. The Squirrel girls, who have since moved to the top spot in the Class B girls' basketball poll, had no trouble with the Rockets in a 61-19 rout in the opener. Game two proved well worth the price of admission, with Central Cass winning by the slimmest of margins, 56-55. Evan Ulrich's 22 points were the top performance for NR-S in defeat...
