  • Prairie Fare: December 9, 2024

Julie Garden-Robinson, Food and Nutrition Specialist, NDSU Extension Service|Dec 9, 2024

I slipped into my heavy coat as I ventured out into the first snowfall of the season. I also wore a long-sleeved shirt and a thick sweater. I probably looked like I gained five pounds in 10 minutes with all of this padding. I was ready to face the cold wind. If I were wearing a white scarf with my black coat, I'd look like a penguin. I relearned the "penguin shuffle" on the icy walk to my car. I didn't want to end up lying flat on the ice. Many people think they gain a fairly significant amount...

  • Prairie Fare: Which foods are safe after power outage?

    Julie Garden-Robinson|Jul 29, 2024

I saw the river of creamy liquid on our garage floor at the base of the freezer. I was on the way to retrieve something to thaw for dinner a few years ago. My heart sank as I walked closer. I saw that the freezer door was slightly ajar. The liquid came from a large box of melting ice cream bars that were irresistible to my children, especially on warm summer days. After squeezing the food packages, I closed the door and began coming up with a game plan to deal with thawed food. Let’s just say that this mom was not happy. I found an ice cream w...

  • Prairie Fare: Meals in the field, past and present

    Julie Garden-Robinson|Sep 18, 2023

A few years ago, I ordered DNA testing kits for me and my husband. I do not think he was thrilled with his Christmas gift. He teased me when our results came back showing he had a more purebred bloodline than I have. His ancestors were primarily of German ancestry, and I am of Scandinavian, mainly Norwegian, descent. Somehow our “mixed marriage” has worked more than 30 years. Later, my results were updated showing that I am more Norwegian than he is German. Now it was my turn to tease him. Every now and then I receive a new “leaf” to add to...

  • Prairie Fare: Harvest nutrition this fall

    Julie Garden-Robinson|Sep 11, 2023

Think back to what you ate yesterday or the day before yesterday. How many one-cup servings of vegetables did you eat? Any kind of vegetables (corn, peas, beans, carrots) count. You can count two cups of raw leafy salad greens as one cup. You can count one cup of cooked beans (such as black beans or kidney beans) as one cup of vegetables. Pause a bit and add up your total. Next, let’s see how your total compares to the recommendations. Women ages 19 to 30 should aim for 2 1/2 to 3 cups, and women 31 and older should aim for 2 to 3 cups of v...

  • Prairie Fare: Canning lids coming soon to a store near you (we hope)

    Julie Garden-Robinson|Jul 5, 2021

“They’re in at the grocery store,” my friend texted. I texted my husband. “They’re in,” I noted. “Pick up the limit. I probably need six boxes this year.” Later, I mentioned on a Zoom call that I had found canning lids. “Where did you get them?” someone texted. I told her and she went to the store. They were all gone by the time she arrived. Who would have thought that canning lids were going to be such a hot commodity? They have been hard to find during the pandemic. The shelves with canning supplies have been empty in many stores. I am g...
