Since suffering a tough loss to Thompson in their season opener, the New Rockford-Sheyenne volleyball team has rebounded with two straight impressive wins. They took down Medina/Pingree-Buchanan in five sets, and now against a less-experienced Barnes County North team, the Rockets did exactly what great teams are supposed to do. The Rockets made quick work of the Bison on Thursday, Sept. 7, taking down the team from District 5 in only three sets. The usual suspects were once again fantastic, as...
Rockets Cross Country is back on the run. On Friday, Sept. 8 they took their marks on a wet, miserable afternoon in Ellendale, N.D., and on Monday, Sept. 11, they were at Crystal Springs for their third meet of the season. The meet in Ellendale was the Rockets' first since they opened the season in Jamestown in late August, as the scheduled Carrington meet was canceled due to poor weather. Poor weather did nothing to deter event organizers in Ellendale, however, as runners found themselves in...
Shooting sports just got a pretty big upgrade in Eddy County, just in time for hunting season. Jess Bush, an active member of the Eddy County Rod & Gun Club, said a number of great new features have now been installed at the shooting range just a few miles northeast of New Rockford. The range has been a staple in the area since its creation around a decade ago, and an essential hub for local shooting sports enthusiasts, hunters and clubs. According to Bush, many of the range's new features will...
In an unexpected twist at city hall, Becki Schumacher has submitted her resignation as auditor for the city of New Rockford, and on Tuesday, Sept. 5, city commissioners named 19-year-old Andrew Presnell the city's new interim auditor. Schumacher resigned after serving as the city's auditor for little over two years, and commissioners were reluctant to approve her resignation, noting how effective she's been for the city. However, Schumacher said she got an opportunity to work remotely and...
At their meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 5, Eddy County commissioners looked at cost estimates for a proposed multi-million dollar project to improve County Road 10, known locally as the Brantford road. There were three different estimates presented, with each one projecting the cost per mile for different versions of the project. The cheapest option would involve reducing the currently-paved road to gravel, and would include a full-depth reclamation, 6” aggregate and a dust control chemical – that op...
The Eddy County Museum may look the same from the street, but what's inside could surprise you. Since its creation in 1965, the museum has held some of the county's most historic items, offering a unique glimpse into the past of Eddy County and surrounding region. For years, however, the museum appeared more like a collection of stuff than an actual museum, as it lacked organization and dedicated exhibits. But recently that's begun to change. After years of great work and generous support, the E...
Not for the first time, discussions at the recent city commission meeting were all about water. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, commissioners began with positive news, discussing a potential solution to their ongoing water woes. It wasn’t long, however, before they were once again defending their recent decisions regarding water service fees when questioned by property owners. Ever since updates were made to the city’s water treatment plant, New Rockford residents have increasingly expressed their concerns...

by Nathan Price Against the winless Larimore Polar Bears on Friday, Sept. 1, the New Rockford Sheyenne/Maddock Rockets did exactly what good teams are supposed to do. Entering Friday's matchup, the young Larimore roster had suffered two straight dominant losses to the FW/M Indians and North Prairie Cougars, and the Rockets too made quick work of the Polar Bears. The scoring started early with the first of many special teams touchdowns, as senior Logan Maddock returned a punt after the Rockets'...

By game's end, however, everyone would understand just how great this year's Rockets truly are....
On Tuesday, Aug. 29, local emergency responders were put to the test, as they took part in a mock disaster exercise at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford. The fake scenario they responded to was all too relevant for New Rockford residents: a major roof collapse due to heavy snow. Eddy County Emergency Manager Lisa Thompson said planning for the exercise has long been underway, and that a tabletop version of the training was conducted back in January, the very same week the Ro...

Teaching 9th grade physical science this year is Shannon Welk, who's also teaching 7th and 6th grade STEM (Science, Technology, English and Math) and an elective course on medical terminology. Sometimes I wonder what people expect from local newspapers like the one I work for, and from local reporters like myself. While readers regularly thank us for our great coverage, we’ve also been told we’re too negative, and that our only job should be to “build up” our community with positive news. Recently I was reminded what it means to be a good reporter, and why I work for two of the best newspapers in North Dakota. Some may have heard about the small-town newspaper in Kansas that was rec...
After winning their first game this season against the North Star Bearcats, the Rockets were looking to build on their momentum in their home opener on Friday, Aug. 25. Their opponents were the Four Winds/Minnewaukan Indians, yet another team with lofty expectations this season – and for much of the first half it appeared as though NR-S/M may have met their match. The first quarter of Friday's game was scoreless by both teams, as the respective defenses managed to grind their opponents' d...
The Rockets Cross Country team competed at their first meet in nearly two years on Saturday, Aug. 26. The meet took place in Jamestown, and as the location of this year's state cross country meet, it was very well attended by both Class B and Class A schools throughout North Dakota. For the Rockets, only the middle school team was able to compete, as those that would have raced varsity or junior varsity are two-sport athletes and therefore did not yet have the necessary number of practices...
The Fessenden Cooperative Association and CenDak Cooperative will join forces in the new year. The merger was made official on Monday, Aug. 21, when member-owners met separately with their respective cooperatives in Maddock, N.D. to vote on the proposed "Unification Agreement," which was announced earlier this month and already approved by both boards of directors. Despite concerns being expressed by some member-owners, the "yeas" won out, as both cooperatives voted to approve the unification....

Stutlien is a native of Harvey, N.D. with a degree in secondary math education from Valley City State University. He graduated...

When the New Rockford-Sheyenne/Maddock Rockets weren't busy expelling their stomach contents on Friday, Aug. 18, they were playing great football against the North Star Bearcats. It was only the Rockets' first game of 2023, but if their performance that night was anything to go on, it appears they'll have a good chance of meeting their lofty expectations this year. Since Friday's game, many have come to lovingly refer to the Rockets' season opener as "Puke Bowl," after seemingly every other...
It's an exciting time for Rocket athletics. While the football team kicks off its season with lofty expectations, Rockets' volleyball is also raring to go, and they too are expecting big things this season. Last year, the varsity girls enjoyed the best season in the history of Rockets' volleyball, beginning their run with a great regular season and earning second seed for the Region IV Volleyball Tournament. They proceeded to make their way through the bracket, and ultimately stunned Langdon...
After rejecting a plea agreement earlier this summer, Nicholas Poitra’s murder trial is finally on the docket. He subsequently led law enforcement on a 65-hour-long manhunt, and wasn’t arrested until an Eddy County farmer held him at gunpoint after he called police and while he awaited their arrival. Ever since, local residents and T...
Edward Vawter has suffered through more in his 12 years of life than most deal with in a lifetime, but recently he got to see a long-held dream of his become reality. Vawter is the grandson of Cities Service owner Ron Lende and the son of NRHS graduate Janessa Lende, and he's been leaving an impression as he's courageously battled a rare condition. Vawter was born with Freeman-Sheldon Syndrome, an extremely rare disease that affects the development of bones, joints and the face. To date, only...
