When it comes to high school football, there are few accomplishments sweeter than winning on Homecoming. That sweet taste was savored on Friday, Sept. 16, when a week of Homecoming celebrations in New Rockford culminated in a dominant win for the Rockets. Their opponents were the Benson County Wildcats, who simply couldn't keep up with the sheer speed and toughness of New Rockford's ball carriers. The Rockets' running attack was everything it needed to be, and then some. NR-S Junior Connor...
This time a year ago, the NR-S School Board rejected a policy that some feared would eliminate the classic “snow day.” Now, that policy is once again up for discussion, and board members had a far more favorable view of the proposed action at their most recent meeting. If passed, Policy ABAC would allow the New Rockford-Sheyenne School District to temporarily offer virtual instruction when “weather or other conditions” require that hours of in-person instruction be canceled. Back in Septemb...

With the loss of seniors like Nick Berglund, Koby Duda and Kaden Jensen, many feared Rocket football was destined for a season-long struggle in 2022. Those fears were likely stoked following the Rockets' blowout loss to the Cavalier Tornadoes on Sept. 2. And after news broke of the new football co-op between New Rockford-Sheyenne and Maddock Public School, some may have even begun pinning their hopes on 2023. But if this year's Rockets have proven anything, it's that they have no intention of wa...
As expected, on Monday, Sept. 12, the New Rockford-Sheyenne school board was presented with two amendments for a proposed football co-op agreement between NR-S and Maddock Public School. The agreement originally stated the team’s name would remain unchanged. However, following further discussion by the Maddock school board and community, a request was made to amend the name to, “New Rockford-Sheyenne-Maddock Rockets.” Discussion of the name change on Sept. 12 was relatively brief, as the room...
Bowling leagues are finally making their return to Wonder Lanes. Leagues haven't taken place at Wonder Lanes since the spring of 2020, when operations ground to a halt because of the COVID pandemic. The New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation (NRABC) purchased the bowling that fall after longtime owners Leroy and Pat Krueger decided to retire, and then raised more than $300,000 to renovate the space. Those renovations turned Wonder Lanes into one of the most modern bowling alleys in North Dakot...
It’s long been a tradition to cut out a nice photo in the newspaper, perhaps of your kids or of a relative, to remember the time they made the front page or got a good tackle during that week’s football game. However, the photos that actually make it into the print newspaper are only a fraction of the high-quality pics the Transcript takes every week. Over the course of a football game, for example, the photographer is likely to capture dozens of excellent photos, most of which, of course, can...

On Friday, Sept. 2, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets took on an old nemesis: the Cavalier Tornadoes. Though NR-S had just come off an impressive win the week prior, the Rockets undoubtedly faced a tougher challenge against Cavalier, who are pegged as one of the best 9-man football teams in North Dakota and are expected to compete for this year's state title. To make matters more difficult, Rockets Head Coach Elliott Belquist wasn't on his team's sideline, as he traveled to Nebraska to watch...
The aroma of freshly-brewed coffee and tasty treats has returned to downtown New Rockford. With its stylish interior and trendy clothes, Emma Myhre first opened Flair Boutique & Coffee in late June, just in time for the Summer Street Market. Though customers were able to purchase and enjoy much of what Flair Boutique had to offer - such as clothes, hats, hand bags, and jewelry - the much-anticipated coffee shop wasn't quite ready. "There were just a lot of things to go through," said Myhre on...

Major changes are on the way for Rocket football in 2023. At the NR-S School Board's regular meeting on August 8, board members discussed, at length, a draft football co-op agreement between NR-S and Maddock Public School (MPS). That discussion ended with unanimous approval of the agreement by NR-S board members, sending the co-op proposal to Maddock's administrators for their approval or disapproval. MPS Athletic Director, Shannon Louder, told the Transcript on Aug. 29 that they've also now...
Students of the New Rockford-Sheyenne School District began classes on Thursday, Aug. 25, and now, more than a week later, they're getting themselves acquainted with all the new teachers. However, it's quite possible they'll have recognized some of those new faces, perhaps none more so than Jim Fleming. Fleming, a New Rockford native and 1980 graduate of NRHS, is teaching technology and engineering this year, and it's his first year of full-time teaching. Fleming, though, has been a school bus d...

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets took on the North Border Eagles on Friday, Aug. 26 for their 2022 home opener. After losing the first game of the season in McVille, the Rockets were hoping to bounce back the following week, and that's exactly what they did. In their loss to Nelson County, the Rockets struggled to find consistency on the ground, an area NR-S Head Coach Elliott Belquist said before the season would be a focus of their offense this year. But a rejuvenated run game against the...
Summer is officially over. On Thursday, Aug. 25, students of the New Rockford-Sheyenne School District filtered into school for the first day of classes. Though many will be busy with first day activities, some might also notice just how much "new" there is at NR-S this year. Students would have immediately noticed the school's brand new front apron, which is now ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible, and doesn't have the large cracks and potential tripping hazards of the old apron....
Earlier this year, a New Rockford couple was accused of child neglect after the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office conducted a search warrant at their home on March 8. According to court documents, the search revealed less-than-ideal living conditions inside the home, as deputies discovered “dried feces on the floor throughout the house,” as well as piles of food, toys and junk. Also discovered were methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Consequently, Gregory and Danielle Holland were charged with...
Eddy County State's Attorney, Ashley Lies, spent last week at the National Computer Forensics Institute (NCFI) in Alabama. On Monday, Aug. 15, Lies found out she was accepted to the Digital Evidence for Prosecutors Course at the NCFI, which is operated through the United States Secret Service and the Alabama Office of Prosecution Services. Mike Brown, a native of Chamberlain, S.D., recently began work as Eddy County's latest sheriff's deputy. Brown is filling the position left open by Christopher Bittmann, who took a job with the Carrington Police Department last month. This is Brown's first position as an officer of the law, but even though he's fresh out of the academy, the 32-year-old has plenty of life experience. After his time with the Minnesota Army National Guard, which included a deployment to Iraq in 2010-11, Brown...

Wiesz, a former employee here at the Transcript, will be teaching business education for high schoolers this year, and she can't wait to get started. In 2012, Wiesz earned a degree in advertising from Liberty...

On Friday, Aug. 19, the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets kicked off their 2022 season against the Nelson County Chargers in McVille. Last season, the Chargers went undefeated in the regular season and extinguished any hopes NR-S had of becoming region 3 champions. For that reason, in addition to the Rockets' lack of upperclassman this year, the Chargers were favorites entering Friday's matchup. Unfortunately for NR-S, it showed. The Rockets' attempted to establish a run game early, but it soon beca...
