On Wednesday, April 6, the Eddy-County 4-H Shooting Sports Club had a meeting. The first order of business was the treasurer’s report. After that, we received forms for the new shirt designs for this year. Our lesson topic was on packing for a backpacking trip. We learned that some of the necessities for packing are toilet paper, fire starter, first aid kit, twine or paracord, a good sleeping bag and a tent, with some sort of water purification. We also learned how much to pack: approximately 1...

  • Students learn about environmental health through Eco Ed at Camp Grafton South

    Oakley Brazil|Sep 20, 2021

On Thursday, Sept. 9, the fifth and sixth graders from New Rockford-Sheyenne school ventured out to Camp Grafton South for the annual Eco Ed event. Students welcomed the opportunity to get outside and get their hands dirty, and professionals from various environmental fields were happy to help them out. I apologize for not being able to remember the names of all the professionals who shared their knowledge, but there are two who really stood out in my mind. Gerri Makay of the North Dakota...

  • Scholar reports on STEM-based learning camp

    Oakley Brazil|Aug 16, 2021

I just returned from the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Pathways to STEM learning camp at the University of Minnesota. This was the first time I had traveled away from home without any family, so it was a very different kind of experience. It turned out that those six days gave me the experience of a lifetime, and I hope many others will consider similar STEM-learning opportunities. STEM is an acronym that stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and offers...

  • Summer Street Market returns to Centennial Park

    Oakley Brazil|Jun 28, 2021

After a year off, the summer street market set up shop in downtown New Rockford. On Thursday, June 17, shoppers browsed the outdoor market and found many items of interest. There were handmade soaps from Clean Little Boys, beautiful tapestries from Laura Hager, watercolor artworks by Mary Estrem, and much more. There were also activities at the event. A pop-up, mini-petting zoo was made possible when Chandy Howard of Eddy County Extension brought in two 4-H sheep. Jane Smith offered a ring toss...

  • New summer reads at the Eddy-New Rockford Library just in time for the Summer Reading Program

    Oakley Brazil|Jun 21, 2021

Hey kids, do you know about the summer reading program “Tales and Tails” at our library? The program is simple - until August 20, readers will receive prizes for every five books they read. Also, a grand surprise is in store for one lucky reader when the program ends. Summer reading is a great way to stay cool and keep your mind sharp. The library just added over 30 titles, thanks to a grant from the North Dakota Coordinating Council. With the theme of “Tales and Tails,” many of these books a...

  • Fifth graders showcase year-end projects

    Oakley Brazil|May 31, 2021

On Monday, May 24, fifth grade students at New Rockford-Sheyenne School proudly displayed their projects in a special year-end showcase. The event was organized by fifth grade teachers John Christiansen and Becki Schumacher, and also art instructor Erin Radke. Family and friends were invited to see fantastic projects in the subjects of science, math, writing and art. It's been a great year as a fifth grader, and I think we all learned how to think a little more outside of the box. See the...

  • What It Took: Writing a Series

    Oakley Brazil|May 3, 2021

Over the years of writing I have learned a lot, but learning is never ending. When I started this “What it Takes” series, I was just eight years old. In the past two and a half years, I have learned a lot about writing. For example, when I started, it took me a long time to sort through notes and write a meaningful article. Now I can do it very easily (as long as I do not procrastinate too much). The hardest part about being a writer is managing the time and energy needed to bring a piece tog...

  • What It Takes: Talking Through Trouble

    Oakley Brazil|Mar 29, 2021

When I first began writing "What it Takes," I was inspired by the simple question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" For me, it was a very confusing question. I mean really? How was I supposed to know? That was when I came up with the idea to interview professionals and learn more about what they do at their jobs. In more than two years of writing, I've learned about photographers, teachers, equine care specialists, and most recently, college students. I have also gained an interest in...

  • What it takes: Soaking up the college experience

    Oakley Brazil|Feb 1, 2021

For the past two years, I've been writing this column about people and their professions. After all this time, I still find myself pondering the age old question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" While I do have an idea of what kind of career I might pursue, I have also noticed that many jobs require at least some college work. That is why this month I decided to interview two college students to learn more about the college experience. The two people I interviewed are both graduates...

  • What it Takes: To build a rod making business

    Oakley Brazil|Dec 14, 2020

For this month's edition of What it Takes, I interviewed my one and only brother. Jackson is two and a half years older than me and has a serious addiction... ice fishing. For Jackson, ice fishing is the most anticipated outdoor winter activity. Now, he is taking things a step further by making custom rods for others who enjoy the sport. For those of you who aren't familiar with the sport of ice-fishing, let me tell you a little bit about it. North Dakota's cold winter temperatures freeze the ar...

  • The votes are in

    Oakley Brazil|Nov 9, 2020

The votes have been cast and the ballots have been counted. Eddy County Auditor Patty Williams and this season’s poll workers have another election year behind them, and I have become a little more informed about the voting process. As I sat preparing this article on Election night, I was full of anticipation and excitement. Real-time data makes it possible for us to witness the results unfold on the screen. As my dad and I watched the results come in, we discussed the electoral college as w...

  • What It Takes: Counting Votes Part II

    Oakley Brazil|Nov 2, 2020

Election Day is almost here, and the poll workers are busy preparing. In my last article, I wrote about County Auditor Patty Williams and how she manages to count all the votes. It turns out she has a fancy machine that will just about do all the counting for her! Upon sharing this with me, she also invited me to join her and the poll workers as they tested the machines. The testing was held on Tuesday, October 27, at the Eddy County Courthouse. Five poll workers were present as well as Patty...

  • What it Takes: Counting votes

    Oakley Brazil|Oct 26, 2020

I have lived through two Presidential elections, but this is the first one that I will know anything about. This month I agreed to learn and write about the election taking place on November 3. I'm already learning more than I thought I could imagine. Just last night, I saw a mail-in ballot for the first time. Let me tell you, it was not very simple. There are many names, and each candidate stands for something different. Voting is a big responsibility, especially in knowing who to vote for. I...

  • What it Takes: Finding a Pal

    Oakley Brazil|Sep 28, 2020

Legend has it that I've wanted a horse since before I could walk. I probably even asked for a pony for my birthday a time or two. The thing is, you can't just go to a pet shop and buy a horse. Even if you could, horses require special living quarters, and a lot of care. The next best thing I could do was find a friend with a horse. I was lucky to meet Nan Taverna and to have her invite me to meet her horse, which she stables at Craig & Bonnie Voigt's barnyard outside of town. Pal, a 14 ½...

  • What it Takes: Coming through, loud and clear

    Oakley Brazil|Aug 31, 2020

After a long break this summer, I am glad to say I am back. This month, I interviewed Steph Loe, a Sheyenne resident who works at RadioWorks in Devils Lake. I interviewed Steph at the RadioWorks studio, where she goes by the radio name Steph Taylor. The studio houses four stations: KZZY Double Z Country, KDLR 1240 AM/99.7 FM, KQZZ Mix 96.7 and KDVL Cruiser 102. Of these stations, there is one I listen to often, so it was really interesting to learn about the others. One of the most interesting...

  • Local youth shows how Kindness Rocks

    Oakley Brazil|Jun 8, 2020

My usual monthly column took a different turn this month, but I think you'll find the detour will be worthwhile. This month I interviewed a young man who wants to share kindness throughout the community. New Rockford-Sheyenne second-grader Theodore Hall visited the Transcript Office with a painted rock and a note for the people of New Rockford. His note read, "To the people of New Rockford, Thank you for being kind. I love the way our town communicates. Everyone waves at everyone. I miss hanging...

  • What it Takes: Sharing hope virtually anywhere

    Oakley Brazil|Apr 27, 2020

I’m sure many of you are with me when I say that I’d sure like to move forward from this COVID-19 thing. But we’re stuck for now. COVID-19 has changed our lives, leaving us to feel isolated and overly stressed. Even more, we’re afraid of something very real that can’t be seen— a virus. I understand that a lot of people are afraid, but I also understand that fear itself isn’t always a bad thing. A little concern can be useful because it makes you cautious and careful and causes you to take precau...

  • What it takes: Living one day at a time

    Oakley Brazil|Mar 30, 2020

(with guest contributor Rachel Brazil) It's been a crazy past couple of weeks. There was one point when I had been stuck in the house for three – maybe even five – days. I couldn't handle being around anyone, especially my brother. During a particularly tense moment, my mom decided it was time to take me for a drive. We stocked up on snacks, filled up with fuel, and we were on our way. Wouldn't you know it? By the time we were in Sheyenne, things began to feel kind of normal. But then thi...

    Oakley Brazil|Mar 2, 2020

The 4-H Trail Riders met on the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 20 at the Schuster residence in New Rockford. Nearly everyone was in attendance. A few were out due to illness. At the meeting, we discussed old business, which included how January meeting was pushed into February. Also, the payment was made to Wonder Lanes for the cost of our Christmas bowling party held in December. New business included discussion of where the next meetings will be held and what activities will be offered, all the...
