At school, I’ve been learning about the water cycle and I realized there is a bit of snowmelt going on. This was especially clear when I took a walk on an unusually warm winter day. I paid extra attention to the water that was melting from the winter’s snow. The water was all going somewhere, but I wasn’t sure where. As I pondered many of my ideas, I decided to interview the City of New Rockford Public Works Superintendent Bruce Hirchert to learn more about what it takes to manage snow and snowm...
In the past year, I've talked to many different people about their careers. This year, though, I want to try to experience those careers too. After all, the best way of learning is through experience. This month I visited the studio of award-winning taxidermist Jamie Risovi. That's right, "Mr. Risovi" as he's known at New Rockford-Sheyenne School is more than a middle school teacher. He is a world-renowned taxidermist. Jamie's specialty is the white-tail deer, which are plentiful in this area....
A year has passed since I became a newspaper reporter, and I have to say I have learned a few things. Over the past 12 months, I have interviewed and featured 10 individuals. Some of them I knew, and some of them I didn't. Some of the interviews were so easy that it didn't feel like work at all. First, I learned that one of the keys to having a good interview is to make sure the person is comfortable and that the interview is all about them. It is also helpful to write down the interview...
The Trail Riders 4-H club gathered on Sunday, Dec. 1 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd to decorate trees. Afterwards we enjoyed hot cocoa, cider and cookies. On Sunday, Dec. 15, the club held its annual holiday party. This year we went to the bowling alley. We enjoyed a few games and also a lunch of pizza and pop. Afterwards the club held a short meeting....
On Saturday, Dec. 7, I volunteered during the annual Santa Day Celebration at the Brown Memorial in New Rockford. My job was to hand out a special gift to the children who came to see Santa. Santa arrived right on time, riding in a beautiful white horse-drawn carriage. He waved gleefully to the crowds that welcomed him. He was happy to see me and knew right away, I was there to help. He even complimented my elf ears! I have to confess: I haven't done much volunteer work in the past year. At the...
Before you drive out of town or reach for the computer for this year's holiday shopping, take a moment to consider if you can make your purchase in town and keep those dollars local. You'd be surprised how many treasures we uncovered while just visiting just a few of the retail stores in New Rockford. (There are many options to consider. We're just sorry we didn't find the time to visit more of our retailers.) Every item featured in this gift guide is (or at least was) available to purchase...
On Sunday, Nov. 17, the Trail Riders 4-H group held a meeting at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sheyenne. All of the club’s 11 members were present. Old business included planning for the annual Helping Hands event at the Lutheran Home on Dec. 1. On that day, all the area 4-H clubs come together to decorate the Christmas trees at the home. New business including planning the club’s Christmas party. The group came up with many good ideas before finally deciding on the movie theater. With any luc...
As a fourth-grader, I feel pretty grown up. Being at the top of the elementary, I am often reminded that there is an example to be set. It's a whole different sort of world in fourth grade, but it never hurts to look back. Mrs. Koepplin teaches third grade, and this is her first year for that. It is also her first full year at NR-S. Last year at this time, Mrs. Koepplin was hired to teach in the first-grade classroom. So when I went down the elementary hallway to her classroom, I saw the...
The 4-H trail riders held their first meeting of the year on Sunday, Oct. 20. The Helseth family provided snacks. Elections were held for officers and there were nine members were present. Here are the results: • Rebekah Widmer, president • Mathew Schuster, vice- president • Joie Helseth, secretary • Mason Schuster, treasurer • Oakley Brazil, reporter After discussing plans for future projects, club members did an art painting led by Jean Schuster. The technique she shared was called “acryl...
This month I want to introduce readers to Mrs. Erin Radke, the new art teacher at New Rockford-Sheyenne School. This is a job that she has wanted to do since she was five years old and she couldn't be happier. "I'm living the dream!" she says. Originally from Springdale, Ark., Mrs. Radke says that one reason she moved to North Dakota was because she LOVES snow. She now lives in Carrington with her husband Marc Radke, but she will be moving to New Rockford this fall. Mrs. Radke believes that...
I was just a baby when I first met Josolyn Collier of Shear Delight Salon in New Rockford. She was the first person and is among the few to ever cut my hair. I had long, brown wavy hair, and my mom loved it. It was my dad who took me in to get my first haircut. He was lucky that Josolyn knew just the right amount of hair to cut in order to keep everyone happy. Hair is funny. It's always growing. This summer, I talked to my mom into letting me sport my first buzz cut. I think it was hard for her...
Editor's note: This is the seventh feature in the monthly series "What it Takes," written by NR-S fourth grader Oakley Brazil who is currently visiting his grandparents on the Oregon coast. To run a successful blueberry farm, Wally Hazen says it takes a lot of hard work, energy and year-round commitment. The Hazens got into the blueberry business by accident. They were looking for property for their horses and found a 50 acre parcel of land with 5 acres of blueberries. They purchased this land...
By the time you read this, I will be in Oregon with my grandparents. It has become a tradition for my brother and I to spend the summer with them. Like many years before, this year Grandpa came to visit before taking us back on the train. Grandpa recently retired as a meat cutter and grew up seeing the process of turning an animal into meat. He said that in his day, the meats were of different. They ate things like beef tongue, oxtail and sweet breads. He told me about his grandfather who would...
Over the weekend I was enjoying some Hershey's Kisses and noticed something very interesting. In the space between the K and the I, there was a kiss shape. When I showed my mom, she was surprised to see it and even more surprised that I noticed such a tiny detail. Graphic artists were the ones responsible for that creative design. It turns out, I actually know a graphic designer and decided to learn what it takes to work in that field. Ashley Schuster has worked at the New Rockford Transcript...
This is the fourth article in the feature series "What it Takes," which explores careers from a child's perspective. I've met new people and gotten to know others even better. I have also been able to learn about jobs that I might one day be interested in doing. Most of all, I hope that others might have learned something too. One job I've wanted to do for a long time is a lifeguard. It goes back to when I began taking swimming lessons. I love the water and being around younger kids. So when I...
So I have to say "April Fools!" Last month I ended my article by saying I was going to interview someone that I didn't know. But I had a really great chance to interview someone I know and I couldn't pass it up. Maybe you know her too! Natasha Kolles has been a pastor for almost nine years. Eight of those years she spent as the pastor at the Sheyenne-Oberon Area Ministry. Now she works at Zion Lutheran Church in Minot. I have seen pastors doing their job at churches and funerals. I thought it...
This month I interviewed local photographer Sarah Smith Warren. She is a close friend, which is good because I am still getting used to this newspaper-writing thing. She has even taken our family pictures, but I didn't really know what it what it takes to be a photographer, until now. The first interview question I asked was simple, "What do you do for a living?" Sarah replied, "I own my own photography business. Photography used to be a hobby or a second job for me. But now it has grown and...
Editor's Note: New Rockford-Sheyenne third grader Oakley Brazil is embarking on a new adventure as a newspaper writer. In his monthly series, "What it takes," Brazil will interview local workers to better understand what it takes to work in various jobs. Kids are always asked 'what do you want to be when you grow up?' but we don't really know what kinds of jobs there are. The goal of this column is to give children (and other adults) the chance to learn what it takes to do common jobs such as a...
Our adventure began on the 28th of May, when we took the Amtrak train out of Devils Lake N.D., for an approximate 28 hour train ride to Portland, Ore. There we were picked up by Grandpa and Auntie Shana for a three hour car ride to Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, Wash. Great Wolf Lodge was a birthday treat from Auntie Shana, and boy was it fun. We spent two days on the water slide, in the arcade and doing quests. The water park was most likely the biggest attraction. Our favorite slide was...
