The Eddy County Commission has received $21,225 in funds from the Court Facilities Improvement Grant. The application was prepared in December utilizing an estimate from Leben Masonry for various repairs to the brick exterior of the courthouse totaling $28,300. It is the county’s responsibility, per the grant agreement, to contribute 25% of the project costs. The work will be done this spring. Road Superintendent Todd Weber is approaching his one year anniversary in the position, and he is still keeping an eye toward the future. During the C...
Pregnancy loss remains one of the most avoided topics in our daily conversations, even though national estimates suggest that one in four pregnancies end in loss. Lily’s Hope Ministry is a new organization started locally to help families during this difficult time. On Wednesday, Jan. 21, the Eagles Club presented a check to Lily’s Hope Ministry in the amount of $10,000. The funds will be used for a 3-by-5 foot monument and seating bench. On one side, the monument will read, “Lovingly dedicated...
Last week, we reported the results of a local food feasibility study produced by the Northern Plains Resource & Development Council. This week, we offer a plethora of learning opportunities that you might want to dig into. Attend a conference with North Dakota Farmers Market & Growers Association Cultivate is the theme of the 16th annual NDFMGA & Local Foods Conference scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 28 and 29, at the Baymont Inn in Mandan. The two-day conference is sponsored by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture and the NDFMGA,...
I can’t be certain as to how, when, or from whom these 8 millimeter film reels made it into the possession of the Eddy County Museum, but I do know these two are gems. That’s the thing about media – songs, films, YouTube videos – they all live well beyond their years. If you think you don’t know who Abbott and Costello are, then I encourage you to do a quick Internet search. What did you find? Or should I ask ‘who’ did you find? The Who’s on First Routine is perhaps one of the most well known...
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Northern Plains Resource Center and Development Council presented the results from a feasibility study for local foods in northeast North Dakota, and the results weren’t nearly promising as one might think. Even here in farm country, growing and distributing food products can be a daunting challenge. The study was funded by a Rural Development Grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and focused on the northeastern portion of the state, including Rolette, Towner, Cavalier, Pembina, Pierce, Benson, Ramsey, W...
The discovery kerosene dates back to 1846 when British physician Abraham Gesner devised a method for distilling coal. The clear fluid that resulted became known as kerosene and proved to be an indispensable fuel source in the century ahead. Kerosene lamps had yet to make an appearance until 1853 when Polish inventor Ignacy Łukasiewicz and American Robert Edwin Dietz each designed a suitable lantern at the same time, and independently of each other. The Dietz Lantern offered a flat wick made of...
The NR-S school board approved the hiring of an assistant coach for the school’s archery team. Archery is in fourth year, and has in increasing number of participants. Last year, the team included 62 students. This year, 83 have signed on to the sport and each one will be involved in practices, weekly tournaments and a state tournament in March. Superintendent Jill Louters commented to the board, “There has been an overwhelming student response to archery. That just goes to show, we’re tapping onto something powerful.” Current element...
A McClusky family suffered tragedy earlier this month when a house fire destroyed their home and claimed the life of a child on Wednesday, Jan. 8. Quenten Fiebelkorn (formerly of New Rockford) and wife Katie are now trying to pick up the pieces. Quenten is recovering from third degree burns on 58% of his body. His injuries were sustained after he attempted to rescue his four-year-old son from the flames. Quenten and Katie's three-year-old daughter suffered burns to her face. All three living...
This woven sewing basket has been around longer than any of us who are living. Made in 1870, this basket was once a much-needed standby to a seamstress on the praire. Not much bigger than a shoebox, this basket could hold a seamstress’s entire inventory of sewing accessories and supplies, and even include an assortment of fabrics. In the late 1800s and early 1900s skills in sewing and other fiber arts where highly valued. Not only were they able to mend, repair, rebuild and make clothing, but t...
Eddy County Sheriff Paul Lies provided the Eddy County Commission an update on the memorandum of understanding (MOU) proposed by Spirit Lake law enforcement. What remains unknown is how all residents who live within the boundaries of the Spirit Lake Nation can be equitably served. The proposed MOU “intends to facilitate a cooperative law enforcement effort to provide mutual aid and assistance for public safety of the tribe and the county.” It does allow for Eddy County authorities to respond to calls for emergency service and requests for ass...
Eddy County Road Superintendent Todd Weber would like to be more consistent when it comes to maintaining the quality of winter bus and mail routes. Current policies state that the county will only clear township roads when a township supervisor has called in a request. Most often though, Weber said he receives calls from residents before he hears from the township officials. That gets tricky, because even if he sees the need to clear that road, he must first get township approval. Weber adds that it is the residents who know those roads best,...
In the early days of the ice box, harvesting ice was a lucrative business. Small communities often utilized their fresh water sources during the late winter months to collect ice. Could you imagine teams bundling up to haul ice out of the river? Large blocks of ice were then stored in a cooling house and make available for sale. Families relied on the ice to keep the food in the ice box cool. How else could they enjoy cool drinks or ice cream during the warm summer months? My own...
This isn't Coach Risovi's first archery practice. He knows how to prepare young archers for the first archery tournament of the season. Many of these young archers will be attending their first tournament on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Carrington. As Coach Risovi has said before, "There are two things we try to make priorities when going to tournaments. Number one, we represent the school and community as best as we can. After that, we hope to shoot our best score." For these up and coming archers, it...
Snow in winter is just part of living in North Dakota, you think we'd be used to it by now. Still each time the fluffy white stuff accumulates, we find ourselves begrudgingly getting out the snow blowers and facing the temperatures to move snow. This photograph depicts a snapshot of winter life in the early 1900s in New Rockord. But to be honest, the photo I would love to see would show just how shop owners managed to move that much snow! Little information was given with this photo, aside from...
Everyone is invited to the New Rockford-Sheyenne School District Blue Ribbon Celebration. The fun begins on Friday, Jan. 3 at 5 p.m. Elementary staff will host an indoor carnival at the school and invite everyone to come out for some good old fashioned fun. Starting at 5:30, the Rocket Boosters will serve a light meal, and the NR-S school board will host an ice cream social complete with all the toppings. At 7 p.m., the carnival and games will come to an end, making way for a ceremony in the...
When faced with choosing which artifacts to feature first in this column, it seems worthwhile to consider the camera. After all, photographic technology has changed immensely since the late 1800s. Perhaps the most important aspect of the camera is the photograph it produces. In fact, the Eddy County Museum collection includes more than 350 historic photographic images. Chances are, a good number of the photos within the collection were taken with a Brownie box camera. Pictured at right, these...
The entry of NR-S Public School just got a facelift- and not for purely cosmetic reasons. The doors are the first step in implementing secure access to the school. A Department of Homeland Security grant provided funds toward this renovation, which will monitor and control access throughout the day. The next step is to secure the interior doors with a card reader. The doors will continue to be open for events in the evening, however, during the school day the public will be asked to buzz into the main office for school access. Superintendent...
The New Rockford Sheyenne School Board met briefly during the cold and early hours of Thursday, Dec. 12. David Holzwarth reported on the Grading Committee stating that a consensus seems to have been reached among members regarding policy changes. He stated that the committee is in favor of implementing a 5.0 grading scale for scholarships and class rank, yet will use the 4.0 system to award and recognize high honors students at graduation. The Committee will continue fine tuning language before presenting to the board for consideration....
North Dakota Legislators have approved a list of additional rules for cottage food products. The rules were brought forth by the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH). In a press release issued on Tuesday, Dec. 3., the agency says these additions to the original cottage food law commonly known as the North Dakota Food Freedom Act which went into effective Aug. 1, 2017. The North Dakota Food Freedom Act began as a way to allow the production and sale of home-prepared (or cottage) foods such as baked goods, preserves, and pickled items. Now...
Eddy County Sheriff Paul Lies reported to the Eddy County Commission that he and his deputies have seen the benefits of using technology and social media in their day to day tasks. This extends well beyond the humorous and informative posts we have come to see and expect from the department's Facebook page. Sheriff Lies explained how the new computers in squad cars can retrieve extensive information from just the entry of a license plate number. This includes the presumed driver's status,...
Before you drive out of town or reach for the computer for this year's holiday shopping, take a moment to consider if you can make your purchase in town and keep those dollars local. You'd be surprised how many treasures we uncovered while just visiting just a few of the retail stores in New Rockford. (There are many options to consider. We're just sorry we didn't find the time to visit more of our retailers.) Every item featured in this gift guide is (or at least was) available to purchase...
There's a new place in town. Maybe you've noticed. Right across the street from the Eagles Club, in the old Montana-Dakota Utilities building, is The Hair Studio. The history of the salon is simple. New Rockford native Taylor (Cook) Weber returned home in 2014. She had studied at Josef's School of Hair Design West Academy in Fargo and later worked in a salon specializing in men's styles. However, there wasn't space available back here in New Rockford for her to set up shop. Even if someone wante...
The Eddy County Sheriff's Office is at it again. On Thursday, Dec. 12, deputies, highway patrol, and other law enforcement officers from around the area will be hosting the annual Shop with the Sheriff event. This program not only gives youngsters an "unique shopping experience" but also fosters positive relationships with law enforcement. Here's how it works. After signing up, participants will report to the Eddy County Courthouse at the designated time. From there, kids climb into the back of...
Food. It’s part of the holiday tradition. Think soups, kuchens or oven-baked bread. Don’t forget the jams and sauces, pickles and relishes, chocolate truffles or tamales. Oh my. The list goes on in so many directions depending on your background or preferences. Unfortunately, not all of us are skilled or able to prepare such delicacies to grace the holiday table. So where would one find a gourmet jelly or a freshly prepared rhubarb-strawberry cheesecake? You’d probably start asking around. If you’re lucky, you’d be directed to the right per...
Last December, the Transcript published an article introducing New Rockford area native Patrick Schmid’s efforts to open a grassroots food pantry on the Spirit Lake Nation. It was a year ago that Schmid took a big leap in an effort to give back to his community. Schmid, now a resident of Devils Lake, sought to create a non-profit food bank that served the Spirit Lake Nation and surrounding communities. During this past year, with support from countless individuals, Schmid has seen his project through five mobile food truck drops, serving o...
