  • Street Market does summer right

    Rachel Brazil|Jul 22, 2019

On the evening of Thursday, July 11, New Rockford’s downtown was abuzz with activity. First the tables arrived, courtesy of the Community Ambulance Service of New Rockford. Then vendors started to occupy Centennial (Gazebo) Park, and storefronts moved out onto the sidewalk. Without delay, market-goers filled parking spots and flooded the market. From the Transcript office downtown, it was quite a sight. “There are a lot of people out there,” I remember saying to no one in particular. “I don’t think I recognize anyone.” It was truly impressive...

  • Local woman opens home and heart- launches animal sanctuary

    Rachel Brazil|Jul 15, 2019

There's been a buzz in the barnyard. The ducks are quacking and the geese a-honking. The horses stomp and whinny, a baby goat bleats, and the llama makes whatever noise it is that llamas make- apparently a kind of grunt. These sounds might be reminiscent of a beloved children's storybook, complete with dramatic animal personalities to go along with a playful plot. However, this is a different kind of a story, and it takes place on a very real place just southwest of New Rockford. Hawkes...

  • Calling all speedsters: Rockin' Fitness now offers training for strength, endurance and speed

    Rachel Brazil|Jul 8, 2019

Rockin' Fitness has something new to offer. By new I just don't mean "new." I mean state-of-the-art, innovative, cutting-edge technology new. We're talking Tuff Tread high performance treadmills. On Friday, June 28, some of NR-S's top student athletes gave Tough Tread a try. I could feel the energy before I even walked in the door of the DPRCA dance studio that morning. The words, "Move, Move, Move!" echoed as Beau Chavez, Board Certified Athletic Trainer and Director of Education for Tuff Tread...

When Amy Wobbema of the New Rockford Area Chamber of Commerce came to inform him that he had been nominated for and awarded the Employee of the Month honor, Tim was all smiles to say the least. The nomination came from Colleen Dockter,...

When local farmer and rancher Travis Steele sat down to read the May 14, 2018 edition of the "New Rockford Transcript," he had no idea that a big idea was about to hit him. It's been a tough year for the community. After the unexpected windstorm that ripped through our region on July 8, 2018, we found ourselves knee-deep in downed trees and wondering how things will ever look "normal" again. While our parks, yards and neighborhoods might not ever look exactly the same, we can say that we are a community of recovery and resiliency. On Wednesday, May 29, the North Dakota State Arbor Day event will be held in New Rockford to celebrate the community's recovery from...

  • Life lessons we can learn from the trees

    Rachel Brazil|May 27, 2019

Editor’s note: This article was submitted on behalf of Eddy County Community Cares, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to creating awareness about mental health issues. When I was young, I spent many hours with my friends the trees. I collected seed pods from maples and sycamores, desegmenting them as if I might find the secrets of the universe they held within. I collected the leaves from birches, sweet gums and poplars, pressing them in contact paper to make colorful collages. I would climb high in the branches, barefoot and ready to t...

  • Extension takes ag education to schools

    Rachel Brazil|May 6, 2019

Agriculture is all around us. It is part of the food we eat, the beverages we drink, the clothes we wear and many of the products we use everyday. It's such a part of our world that sometimes it is easy to forget how much goes into the production of things like our string cheese, pork rinds or wool socks. That is exactly why seven years ago Eddy County NDSU Extension developed "Ag in the Classroom." The program extends to four schools in three counties (Eddy, Foster and Wells) and has since moved out of the classroom and into the gym to accommo...
