I hope you all are having a restful month! As we come to the end of the month, I want to focus on one more subject before I turn it over to someone else. As people who love and follow God, the Bible tells us to try and be more like Jesus each day. (1 John 2:6) We can read the Gospels to see how Jesus lived. As we do this, we observe Jesus prioritized rest, even though he was literally saving the world (His to-do list was way more important than yours, sorry to break it to you). If Jesus, the Son of God, rested then why do we think we are the...
Now that we’ve dug into what rest is, why we should rest, and how we start to do that—I want to look at the Sabbath. You may have a lot of ideas associated with the word Sabbath, but we are going to look at what the Bible says about the Sabbath, and how we can incorporate it in our everyday lives. In doing this, I hope to break down and rid us of the false ideas we have toward the subject. First let’s look at scripture. The Bible talks a lot about the Sabbath—especially in the Old Testament, but Jesus also talks about it in the Gospels...
“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him. Truly He is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; He is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.” Psalms 62:5-8 NIV “Be still.” That is what the Lord has been telling me the last few days. The last week and a half has been a whirlwind. I’ve been traveling and going constantly, I’ve barely had a moment to sit down. I was driving back home,...
Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV) “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” This verse has been my motto this summer. I work full time with a campus ministry. Though I LOVE what I do, at the end of the school year, I was tired, and had a tendency to just go through the motions. When summer hit, the Lord got my attention and highlighted this verse. He spoke to my...
I’ve had several conversations with different people about anxiety lately. Last week I wrote about worry and stress, but I think anxiety can fall into an entirely different category. Yes, most of us have everyday things we are anxious and worried about, but these conversations have been about the type of anxiety that consumes you and stops you in your tracks. Some people have anxiety that stops them from functioning, makes it hard to get up in the morning, or makes the simplest of things seem like life or death. These conversations made me r...
He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” -Psalm 46:10 The Lord has been reminding me of the basics lately. He has been bringing me back to him, his heart and the building blocks of knowing him. Two weeks ago, I wrote about prayer, last week I talked about love, and this week I want to explore the idea of being still. I want to explore what that means and why it’s important in our lives. Last week I had a busy week. I went to Fargo, went camping, had to work and got ready...
1 Peter 4:8 “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” These last few weeks... no, months, have made 2020 one for the history books. Not only do we have a virus that has almost shut our country down, now riots have hit the streets and people are loudly protesting the injustices in our world. I’ve watched the news and scrolled social media, all the while wondering what can I do to help. How can I make an impact in our world when it seems to be spinning too fast around me? Last week I wrote about pra...
“Make your life a prayer.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 TPT The Lord has been teaching me about prayer, a lot, lately. Prayer is a subject I think we can become ambivalent or casual towards. We know the spiel, “it’s important, it works, and it’s how we communicate with God.” But do we really understand the power of prayer? How by simply asking, God can change his mind and alter the future of a people, a nation and the world. The world has become a crazy place and seems to be getting crazier by the day. We watch the news and see anger, violence, r...
Change is something I have never been very good at. When it comes to large changes, I tend to have a mini-crisis. Eventually, I will be okay, but each brand-new season almost always comes with a rocky start. An example of this is when I first started college at NDSU. I came into college as a music education major, and I quickly realized it wasn’t what I wanted to do. I love music but I didn’t want to study classical music for four years. I didn’t know what I wanted to change my major to so when it came to my second semester, I decided to drop...
“Trusting the Father” by Rhianne Bowman One of the big things God taught me in college was how to trust him. I came to college and didn't know what my major was going to be or what I wanted to do with my life and people kept telling me "just trust God, he will lead you in the right direction." I got frustrated because I wanted to trust God but I didn't know how to do that. As I went through my four years of college, God slowly started to teach me how to trust him. It started with small things, my class schedule. He worked everything out, ope...
This past weekend, my staff and I went to Iowa for a conference. This was the second of three conference road trips we will be taking within the next few weeks. It is only the beginning of November, and already I am tired. It is clear this month will be a crazy one. In the midst of these crazy few weeks, God has been teaching me a lot about what it means to rest in him. Our intern class went to Minneapolis to visit the University of Minnesota Chi Alpha. One of the pastors there was talking about the importance of taking a Sabbath and working...
One of the biggest lessons I have learned in college and continue to learn, now that I am graduated, is learning to wait on and trust the Lord. I think in each season of life, God teaches us something new about waiting for him and how to trust him in each area. My biggest challenge and season of waiting in college was trusting God with choosing a major and what he was calling me to. Once I was called to ministry, it was learning how to trust him with that calling and waiting to graduate so I could enter the ministry field. Now, I am graduated a...
I am in my final year at NDSU majoring in English with a psychology minor. Going into college I struggled with anxiety, and feeling the pressure to decide on a major, which felt like a life altering decision, didn’t help. But as I began to know God more, he freed me from my anxiety and taught me to trust him more and more. He placed me in a community of people who loved and accepted me. Honestly, this community is one of the reasons I am still in college today. Even after I took a semester off during my freshman year, they welcomed me back i...
The holidays are known for the joy, laughter, and happiness which surrounds them. Between the Christmas lights, gift giving and receiving, and the Hallmark movies, it seems like the holidays should look like they do in the movies. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. This time can be stressful and very hard for some. It is not always a time of joy and happiness, but rather stress, despair and sadness. Thinking back on previous Christmas seasons, I am reminded of my family’s first Christmas here in New Rockford. I was in kindergarten, and...
