We have all eaten probably a few too many Christmas cookies and have spent time with our loved ones. 2024 was quite the year for the Park District so let’s take a quick trip down memory lane. I jumped into this role knowing very little, but did have some knowledge from working for the park board previously. I started in April at the very start of busy season for the park. April and May consisted of learning how to do stuff in the office, getting all the baseball programs put together (schedules, coaches, equipment, jerseys), getting the pool up...

I very much appreciate receiving letters from readers, even the critical ones. I received a two-fer in the mail right before Christmas. On the surface it was a Christmas card in a festive envelope. When I opened it, however, I discovered that it was much more than just a hello on the holidays. It was a letter from a reader, in particular a response to an editorial I published about immigration, with words scrawled across every open square inch of the card. After reading it, that one has a...
Brandon Granger, the son of Texas Republican Rep. Kay Granger, informed the Dallas Express his mother has been battling "some dementia issues late in the year" and had been residing in an assisted-care facility for the last half year. The most recent vote she casted on the House floor was in July, and she has been absent for more than 300 votes since that time. While this is certainly alarming news to hear, Granger is hardly an anomaly. The median age of senators in the incoming 119th Congress...
The Framers: integrity and impeachment will temper use of pardon power English history was constantly before the eyes of delegates to the Constitutional Convention as they stressed about the exercise of the presidential pardon power. Kings had abused the pardoning authority for corrupt ends. They sold pardons to those who could afford them and, on occasion, sought to screen from parliamentary inquiry those whom they had instigated to violate the law. The historical practice, it seemed to the Framers, constituted a parade of horribles. What,...

A couple of weeks ago, I was studying my way through John when I came across a detail that I had never pondered before. For those with Bibles, it concerns the healing story recorded in John 5:1-15. Basically, the story goes that a man had been lame for 38 years when Jesus strolls up and heals him. Now, when I preached this passage, I focused upon the exact command Jesus gave the man: “Get up, take your mat, and walk”; which was very striking, considering the man was lame and it was Sunday. However, unrelated to Jesus’ command, I was struc...
