  • End of World War I commemorated this Veterans Day

    Nov 12, 2018

This year we honor veterans on Nov. 11 for the 100th time in our nation's history. World War I, also known as "The Great War," officially ended on June 28, 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed in France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of World War I. One year later, President Wilson...

  • Opinion: Veterans Day: is it enough?

    Danny Tyree|Nov 12, 2018

"What have you done for us lately?" I don't think the average American military veteran has the time or the temperament to spend 51 weeks a year asking such a question, but a reasonable person could hardly blame him if he did. Veterans Day can be like Mother's Day or Father's Day - an occasion to heap praise upon individuals whom we spend the rest of the year ignoring, tolerating or circumventing. A week's worth of bumper stickers, newspaper interviews, special discounts and grade school essays...

  • Sermonette: Nov. 12, 2018

Rev Doug Nemitz, First Lutheran Church|Nov 12, 2018

As I read Mark 12:38-44, the assigned gospel reading for Sunday, Nov. 11, I find it interesting that in the midst of all those who are making their offering at the temple, Jesus took notice of a widow who had obviously fallen on hard times. All that she had was only two measly, tiny coins and she gave them as her offering. Jesus said that she gave her very life. Wow! Note that Jesus did not condemn those who gave far more in monetary worth as they gave their offerings but only noted the relative impact of the offerings. Those who had much,...

  • Opinion: Maybe we should try listening, for a change

    Rich Manieri|Nov 12, 2018

It might be that our political discourse is what it is because those involved are satisfied with the status quo. The rest of us spend a lot of time wringing our hands over the apparent impossibility to find common ground on any important issues, at least until we realize that the loud voices on both the right and left aren't really all that interested in compromise. Political tribalism is evidently more comfortable and satisfying than actually trying to work through and find solutions to intractable problems. Psychologists have a term for this...

  • Living on Purpose: How important is it for us to know God?

    William F. Holland Jr.|Nov 12, 2018

I have thought about why many Christians including myself often struggle in a lukewarm state of mind much more than we should. There are several reasons, but none can be considered justifiable excuses. I have regular conversations with my close friends about the spiritual life and one thing we all share in common is how difficult it is to stay motivated with our prayer life while maintaining our enthusiasm to resist temptation. I realize everyone’s schedule is filled with distractions and we are busy just trying to keep up with everything we n...

A notice said that some animals had strayed from John Neutzel’s farm: one red muley bull and one red muley heifer, both with ropes around their necks; one black cow with a rope around her horns; two red calves; and one spotted calf. During the week,...

  • Dakota Datebook: Takako Konishi Urban Myth

    Merry Helm|Nov 12, 2018

Nov. 12, 2018 — This week in 2001, a Japanese woman was discovered dead after a mysterious cross-state sojourn that many believed was her search for the lost treasure depicted in the Coen brothers’ movie, “Fargo.” Takako Konishi was first noticed by a trucker who spotted the 28-year-old wandering near a landfill on the outskirts of Bismarck; she was wearing a black miniskirt that marked her as an out-of-towner, especially considering the cold November weather. He took Takako to the Bismarck police station where she pulled out a hand-dr...

  • Dakota Datebook: Flag Controversy

    Merry Helm|Nov 12, 2018

November 13, 2018— On this date in 1913, a controversy erupted in Sykeston over whether an American flag had been used improperly. A news story stated, “When the M.E. During the night some one took down the flag and left a note protesting against the use of the old glory for commercial purposes and calling the action of raising it a disgrace.” “The incident created considerable excitement here,” the article continued, “and different views are held by the...
