Roughrider Feeds, a local full-service Purina feed dealer, has recently partnered with Arrowquip to provide new equipment to livestock producers in the area, including safe and effective hydraulic and manual cattle chutes. These chutes allow ranchers to separate and safely restrain cattle in order to provide medical care or any number of necessary procedures. On Tuesday, Jan. 17, local ranchers attended an open house in western Eddy County to view the new equipment on offer. Roughrider Feeds'...
Last October, a group of hunters descended upon a harvested bean field for an early-morning duck hunt in eastern Eddy County, but the hunt was ruined soon after due to an altercation with a nearby landowner. The confrontation was caught on video and uploaded to YouTube by one of the hunters, and has since been watched more than 2.5 million times. The video shows Jeffrey Erman approaching the hunters, who had set up along his property line. He then interrupts the ongoing hunt and begins berating...
Every penny counts. That’s certainly true for the City of New Rockford, which collected $388,536.66 in sales tax revenue last year, 3 percent more than in 2021. According to information obtained from Auditor Becki Schumacher, the total sales tax revenue has increased each of the last five years, after dipping down a bit from 2015 to 2017. Currently, one-half of 1 percent is used to pay off USDA debt for the water project, which has been collected since 2019. The remaining 2 percent is divided u...

The 68th North Dakota Legislative Assembly got underway on Jan. 3, and for the first time in a decade, New Rockford and Eddy County are not being represented by District 23 legislators. Following the 2020 census and subsequent redistricting process, most of Eddy County was moved into District 14, as urbanization forced rural districts to become larger. The old District 23 was eliminated entirely. District 23 legislators who used to represent Eddy County, Joan Heckaman and Bill Devlin, have since...

The intent of this article is to honor those who lie in the graves of the New Rockford Cemetery. We remember them for who they were and the life they shared with this community. The community came together when the article was published in the New Rockford Transcript about the many unmarked graves in Eddy County. Thanks to Tubby Bymoen, donations were received for four individuals (Alex Mathews, Archie Jackson, Boyd Kennedy, Pat Malone) who were unmarked and forgotten by the community. These four stones were installed in the summer of 2022....

Here’s your weekly rundown of some of the most interesting headlines from newspapers across North Dakota. Therapy dog Maura marks one year at Hillsboro High School Around a year ago, Hillsboro’s vo-ag teacher, Levi Reese, decided that introducing a therapy dog into his classroom would be a great source of emotional support for his students. What he didn’t realize, however, was how training, owning and bringing a therapy dog to work five days per week, would also have an impact on him personally. “It changed me. I had another staff member...
It's day seven here at the Legislature. The session has begun with quite a flurry of activity. After the first day, which was made up of a number of addresses, including the State of the Tribes, the State of the Judiciary, and the Governor's State of the State, members have settled into getting bills drafted, and committees hearing those early bills. It looks like we may be headed for a record amount of bills being introduced. As of today's writings, 240 have been introduced in the Senate. That...

Looking at the tax cut proposals now being debated in the legislature, maybe it’s time to revert back to a territory. Apparently, we don’t want the state to accept the responsibilities of providing minimum support for public services. States are supposed to be communities with common interests. In North Dakota, it seems like frontier thinking of starving the public to benefit individuals prevails in the legislature. The tax cuts being proposed will do nothing to raise the quality of roads, edu...
In the 1980s, I repeatedly watched a recorded copy of the film "Escape from New York" on my family's Panasonic VCR – complete with tuning knobs the size of hubcaps. Little did I know that I would star in my own version of the movie (as a domesticated, tattoo-less and slightly flabby version of Snake Plissken) on a recent holiday vacation to the Big Apple. Of course, my family and I chose to travel to New York City during one of the coldest Christmas seasons on record– so cold that even the sub...
In a tragic, landmark ruling of historic dimensions, the Supreme Court, in 1927, in an opinion written by Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, upheld the forced sterilization of a Virginia woman erroneously characterized by the state as “feeble-minded,” grounded on the chilling rationale that, “three generations of imbeciles are enough.” The Court’s 8-1 decision in Buck v. Bell, with only Justice Pierce Butler dissenting, is widely regarded as one of its worst. Justice Holmes’s opinion, just five paragraphs in length, and fewer than 1,000 words...

“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father kn...
In recent weeks, I've been sharing about the collaborative efforts that founded the museum. The Pioneer Daughters were just one of the many organizations involved. After all, they were a local chapter with historic interests. The first objective of the organizations included recording pioneer family histories. The second was to construct a shelf to display historic items in a public setting. As ideas developed and were shared, the project grew into something much bigger. The ideas grew so big...
Snow, salt and soil: Not a recipe for the latest trendy dish. But it could be a recipe for tragedy on your turf and trees. As cold and snowy weather sets in many of us focus on safety precautions, as we should. We watch the weather forecast, we gauge the extra time it may take to travel, we check outside to see if we need to sweep or shovel the walk...and maybe, for good measure, we sprinkle (or pour) some de-icing salt on surfaces where ice has formed. Safety first. While safety must be a...
