The study was funded by a Rural Development Grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and focused on the northeastern portion of the state, including Rolette, Towner, Cavalier, Pembina, Pierce, Benson, Ramsey, W...

  • What exactly is the NRABC?

    Amanda Hegland, NRABC Executive Director|Jan 27, 2020

What exactly is the NRABC? That was my question when I first moved to the area, and a question that I now often get. I was so impressed that a small community had a progressive organization such as this, and as the director I’m proud to tell people what we are all about. Economic and community development is an important issue in North Dakota. Our community is fortunate to have New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation, a group that has been dedicated to this endeavor since 1990 and an office staff focusing on this since 2006. So what is the N...

  • Family landlines better than smartphones for teens

    Tom Purcell|Jan 27, 2020

When my childhood home got a phone call, it was an event. That was partly because my father, a longtime phone-company employee, installed four brass-belled phones throughout our home. The phones rang so loudly it sounded like crooks were breaking into Fort Knox. It was also because we were eager to discover who was calling – though I was always disappointed when I answered and it was a young man calling for one of my sisters. You see, before Caller ID became common in the late 1980s, I was o...

  • Elitist Ivanka Trump want more skilled immigration

    Jan 27, 2020

Ivanka Trump wasn’t in the Golden Globes audience when master of ceremonies Ricky Gervais delivered his scathing indictment of celebrities and Hollywood elite. Trump would have been well advised to heed Gervais’ message. Gervais urged the assembled actors to, if called on to accept an award, shut up, refrain from making political speeches that no one wants to hear, and stop the hypocritical pretense of concern about average Americans, about whom they know nothing. Trump is quite possibly the nation’s most privileged individual. A bride who p...

  • North Dakota has a huge public square

    Jan 27, 2020

Many states claim to be different, but of all of the states, North Dakota has the distinction of having the flattest power structure. Power is distributed thinly because everybody must have “a say.” Egalitarianism runs to the point of becoming sinful. First, our institutional makeup is evidence of our egalitarian public square. We have more elected officials per capita than any other state, with twice as many elected officials than any other state except South Carolina. We have over 10 while most states average around five. The ballot loo...

  • Sermonette: Jan. 27, 2020

    Rev. Mindy Meier, Congregational Church|Jan 27, 2020

This is from the devotional, “God is in the Manger” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German Lutheran pastor who was imprisoned and executed for participating in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. In an incomparable reversal of all righteous and pious thinking, God declares Godself guilty to the world and thereby extinguishes the guilt of the world. God himself takes the humiliating path of reconciliation and thereby sets the world free. God wants to be guilty of our guilt and takes upon himself the punishment and suffering that this guilt bro...

  • Archival Anecdotes: Fuel for the fire

    Rachel Brazil|Jan 27, 2020

The discovery kerosene dates back to 1846 when British physician Abraham Gesner devised a method for distilling coal. The clear fluid that resulted became known as kerosene and proved to be an indispensable fuel source in the century ahead. Kerosene lamps had yet to make an appearance until 1853 when Polish inventor Ignacy Łukasiewicz and American Robert Edwin Dietz each designed a suitable lantern at the same time, and independently of each other. The Dietz Lantern offered a flat wick made of...
