    Rachel Brazil|Jan 28, 2019

It was a gesture that Charlotte didn't really think twice about. For her, kindness mattered most. When Michelle later started a family, she approached Charlotte with a meaningful request. Michelle asked Charlotte and her husband, Lynn Erickson, to be the godparents to her son Dason. For Charlotte, it was an honor to stay involved in...

    Diane Newberry, ND Newspaper Association|Jan 28, 2019

Proposed study promises relief from brain injuries and expensive treatments On a chilly January evening in Fargo, Hannah Anderson went out to dinner. She was able to concentrate on the menu, order her own meal and keep up with the table’s conversation throughout the night. This may not sound like much of an achievement for a seemingly average young woman. But Hannah hadn’t had a night out like this in 11 years. “I felt like my brain injury almost didn’t exist,” said Anderson, the survivor of a nearly fatal car accident in 2007. She said she...

  • Homeland committee considers legislative actions

    LLoyd Omdahl|Jan 28, 2019

“We got to get somebody down to that legislature,” asserted Orville Jordan as he burst into the town’s converted ZCBJ hall for a meeting of the Homeland Security Committee. All 12 of the other city electors were huddled around the old heater close to the stage. Orville was a retired depot agent who didn’t leave when the railroads rolled the tracks up, leaving a 12-foot track bed running through the middle of town. It could be used for sledding if one had a short sled. Of course, there were no...

  • Breaking news-- and wind

    Jase Graves|Jan 28, 2019

My last column's referenced a report of a Dutch airliner that was diverted due to a passenger's flagrant flatulence at 30,000 feet. This column received such a resounding response (at least from my big brother) that I've decided to devote this entire piece to other newsworthy incidents of a gastrointestinal character. While some readers may find this topic unsuitable for publication, I think it's time to clear the air (literally), and recognize the power of a good rip and its potential impact on society. I've always been convinced that God has...

  • Letter to the Editor: Spirit of New Rockford shows during 2018 severe storm

    Jan 28, 2019

Dear Editor: As I reminisce about 2018, one story stands out to me. After the storm hit New Rockford on July 8, 2018, the actions of many people showed great character. All earned my respect and pride. I am referring to all who helped to restore the community by clearing trees and debris from our small town, our airport, and our cemeteries. No matter if they were paid or were volunteers, the necessary tasks were accomplished. There were many blessings that month. I am thinking of your story about the crew of workers from North Central Granite...

  • Letter to the Editor: Research Funding Helps North Dakota Win

    Jan 28, 2019

Dear Editor, We all like to win. With the Super Bowl around the corner and the Vikings out of contention, I may record the game and watch the highlights, fast forwarding until play is in what they call the red zone in football, the last 20 yards. These are clearly the most exciting parts of every game. One is tempted to believe that the most important variable for winning is whether you get a touchdown, field goal or no score when in the red zone. Yet, careful analysis will likely show the more important variable is how many times you get in...

Rager's brother and family arrived from Indiana to work his farm that summer. That evening a 25 cent charge got you into a supper of oysters, meats, etc., followed by cake and ice cream, a meal that would normally be 50 cents, and a musical entertainment, speeches and recitations at the Methodist Church. The men of the church sponsored the...

  • Eyes that see the good things in things: Jan. 28, 2019

    Allison Lindgren|Jan 28, 2019

Have I told you about the 21-day Gratitude Challenge that I accepted on Facebook? It was something that was right up my alley and I’ve enjoyed the daily thought-provoking questions and reading material the leader has been providing. The first day of the challenge, we only had to list three things we for which were grateful. One day, we all posted pictures of something for which we were most grateful. It was the challenge on the sixth day that got me thinking though. The moderator of the group to...

  • Tough stretch for NR-S girls results in district defeats

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 28, 2019

The ball didn’t quite bounce in the New Rockford-Sheyenne girls’ favor during this past week’s worth of basketball action in the District 7 slate. First, the Rockets let a potential victory against the Benson County Wildcats slip away when they were outscored 27-16 in the second half and the visitors stole a 43-39 win on Jan. 18. It didn’t get any easier for NR-S when the district frontrunners, the Four Winds-Minnewaukan Lady Indians, brought their brand of roundball wizardry to the Rockets...

The Rockets went on a 20-0 run to begin the District 7 contest, with Teddy Allmaras scoring 10 of those points, and NR-S’ run-and-gun offense kept on tickling the twine for the rest of the night to easily put away a young Hornets team with just one senior on their roster. For the second straight outing, Hunter Thompson was the leading scorer for the Rockets with 22 p...
