  • Thinking about health: New tax law may put squeeze on rural hospitals

    Wendell Potter, Rural Health Service|Jan 29, 2018

One of the selling points for the tax bill President Trump signed into law a few weeks ago is that it will spur job growth because corporations will use money they otherwise would have paid in taxes to hire more workers. But for rural areas and small towns, one provision of the new law may result in the closure of one of their biggest employers– their hospital. Rural hospitals in general operate on much thinner margins than most big city hospitals, margins so thin that dozens have been forced t...

Let’s start with something we’re not supposed to talk about, shall we? One of the injured students willlikely need his arm amputated. The day before that, a 16-year-old boy with a handgun shot a 15-year-old girl at a high school in Texas. *I put an asterisk next to “most recent” above, because in the time between me writing this and you reading...

  • Hey, Feds, take your ethanol mandate and shovel it!

    Tom Purcell|Jan 29, 2018

My back is sore from shoveling snow - and it’s the federal government’s fault. Maybe I’d better explain. We’ve been getting lots of snow in Pittsburgh of late. When it snows, I need to clear two driveways: mine, which is 50 yards long, and my father’s, which is almost as big. Since my father is having trouble with his knees, I gave him my magnificent new Toro snowblower; it’s a convenience for me to have it in his garage, so I can clear his driveway in fewer than 15 minutes. I purchased a...

  • Sermonette for January 29, 2018

    Rev. Mindy Meier|Jan 29, 2018

During Jesus’ ministry, the world was not a fun place to live. The Roman government occupied the nation, Herod was an ignorant, evil king, and Pontius Pilate wasn’t the thoughtful leader they so longed for. The first disciples were fishermen, working day and night, hard labor, to barely scrape by. Jesus passes by them, and says, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” They drop their nets and follow. It all seems sort of easy, but we know differently. The disciples had no charmed existence, and the person they followed ended up bein...

  • Eyes that see the good in things: January 29, 2018

    Allison Lindgren|Jan 29, 2018

This job of mine isn’t easy sometimes. I’ve been looking all week for a “good in things” story to tell and was getting a little nervous when Thursday morning came, and I still didn’t have anything. Thursday is the day we go to press, you know. I did get a chance to do some photography when the weather conditions left us with beautifully frosted trees. I kept forgetting to change the settings on the camera, though, and was switching from close-ups to landscapes. That didn’t work out so well for...

January 29 - The last lynching The last illegal execution in North Dakota happened in Schaefer. On this date in 1931 when a mob seized a prisoner named Charles Bannon and lynched him a half mile from the jail. Friends thought it was s...
