  • Lady Indians remain unbeaten

    Kyrie O'Connor|Jan 31, 2022

The Rockets took yet another tough loss to District 7 competitors, the Four Winds/Minnewaukan Lady Indians, on Monday, Jan. 24 in Fort Totten. The Lady Indians (14-0) are currently ranked number two in the state behind the Kindred Vikings (13-0). The Rockets simply knew they wouldn't be able to keep up with the Lady Indians. In just the first quarter, the Rockets tallied up six points, whereas the Lady Indians scored 24. And that's how the next three quarters went. The Lady Indians kept scoring...

  • Rockets take District 7 loss to Benson County Wildcats

    Kyrie O'Connor|Jan 31, 2022

The New Rockford-Sheyenne girls' basketball team traveled to Leeds on Friday, Jan. 21 to take on the Benson County Wildcats. The Rockets fell short, losing 47-55. Benson County senior Quinn Neppl was unstoppable. Just in the first quarter, she drained two 3-pointers, one field goal, and 3-of-4 free throws. Neppl slowed down in the second and third quarters, but that gave Ashlyn Williams and Hailey Maddock the opportunity to put up some points. Williams put in two three-pointers in the second...

  • Ouch, that stings! Hornets defeat Rockets by 6

    Nathan Price|Jan 31, 2022

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets suffered another stinging defeat on Tuesday, as the Harvey/Wells County Hornets weathered a fierce comeback attempt to win 55-49. The first quarter of Tuesday's game looked like many of the Rockets' recent games this season - turnover, fast break the other way, easy points for them, and repeat. By the end of the first quarter, the Hornets had established a double-digit lead. But that was before NR-S senior Kaden Jensen sank a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to narrow t...

  • Miners bury Rockets with 7-point win

    Kyrie O'Connor|Jan 31, 2022

This non-district boys' basketball game between the Rockets and the Wilton/Wing Miners was very similar to the first half of the game in the recent District 7 matchup between the Rockets and the FW/M Indians. The Region 5 Miners came into this game sitting 5-0 in Region 5, and 8-3 overall, sitting behind Flasher. Although this game wasn't a district or regional game for either team, it was a great competition for the Rockets and the Miners. The Miners are very fast paced, similar to the FW/M Ind...

    Erik Gjovik|Jan 31, 2022

The Carrington wrestlers took three weight class championships, had another advance to the finals, and had three additional placers at the Nick Storhaug Invitational in Lisbon Saturday, Jan. 22. Duchscherer, the New Rockford-Sheyenne senior, went the point-scoring route to secure the tournament victory by garnering three major-decision victories after an opening-round pin. The...

  • Rocket archers set sights on success

    Nathan Price|Jan 31, 2022

It's that time of year again - New Rockford-Sheyenne's archers are returning to the firing line, and it's already shaping up to be a successful season. On Saturday, Jan. 22, at their first tournament of the year in Kensal, NR-S archers scored a total of 3,158 points, more than any other team at the tournament. Individual standouts were plentiful, with Hunter Genre finishing second among high school boys, and Layton Jacobson finishing first in the middle school boys' rankings. For the girls,...

  • Our Outdoors: Midwinter ice tips

    Nick Simonson|Jan 31, 2022

Midwinter is the trough of the natural world, and the challenges above the ice reflect what's going on below it. Conditions are rougher, colder and there's less movement out there. Everything that runs, flies or swims sometimes seems to be saving up its energy for the warming days coming in just a few short weeks. But all of those creatures have to eat, and there are times when movement is required, and the same holds true under the ice. By adjusting presentations, tweaking lures and making...

  • Peluso Report: Jan. 31, 2022

    Mike Peluso|Jan 31, 2022

Man, I have to admit this winter is starting to get tough, with more snow, cold temperatures, and lots of wind! I can handle the snow and cold, the wind, however, is getting a bit ridiculous and it is making travel on the ice and moving around difficult. You want to go look for fish, but you are stuck hunkering down. So in between the snow, cold and wind, we are still catching fish. It definitely isn't as red hot as it was, but overall, it's still pretty good. I get clients asking me all the tim...

  • Tying The Holographic Streamer

    Nick Simonson|Jan 31, 2022

The Holographic streamer came about as a modification of the Holographic wet fly, a smaller pattern used on eastern waters for trout. When modified to the tastes of crappies and white bass - with its highly customizable components of tinsel, marabou, ice dub and hackle - the Holographic streamer can be tailored to fit the colors that these fish and others prefer in a specific water. MATERIALS: Hook: Tiemco 200R, Size 10 to 6 Thread: 6/0, Choice of Color Underbody: Mylar Tinsel Wing: Marabou...
