This year, however, there won't be any intense feuding among community members. Instead of competing in 'The Feud,' the community foundation is bringing in Duelly Noted as the evening's entertainment this year. Duelly Noted is a sassy, one-of-a-kind, interactive dueling pianos act. The act is performed by Cassondra Lea and Jacy Smith, who have a charismatic connection on...

Weckerly said the funds will be disbursed over five years, with $10,000 contributed each year. Weckerly made the pledge to Amanda Hegland, Executive Director of the New Rockford Area Betterment Corporation, in late January....
During a special meeting of the New Rockford-Sheyenne School Board on Wednesday, Jan. 22, board members carried a motion to offer Natalie Becker a contract to be the district's superintendent for the 2025-26 school year. Becker is currently serving as the district's interim superintendent, a position she took after Dr. Jill Louters' resignation last year and a subsequent superintendent search that didn't result in any new hires. At the time, it was expected that NR-S would resume their...

They will have an anchor person, reporters, camera people and producers. This is a class project...
The cost to purchase this newspaper at the local newsstand has increased by 50%. The newsstand price for a single copy is now $1.50, effective with this edition. Why the change? Well, we’ve done the math, and it costs us more than $3 per copy to produce a single issue of the newspaper. This increase is necessary in order for us to be able to cover even half that cost through subscriptions and single copy sales. Advertising and public notices offset part of the cost but are also used to pay the reporters and photographers who do the hard work g...

Two lucky people from the Sheyenne area had their name drawn for one of the 200 prizes at the 41st annual Devils Lake Volunteer Fire Department Ice Fishing Tournament. Robin Smith won binoculars and DeShawn Lawrence won a $500 gas card. Saturday, Jan. 25, had a wicked cold wind from the north. It is a challenge to get tickets as they sell out fast. Greg and Cindy Hegland and Patti Clifton were in Jamestown last Thursday. They enjoyed noon lunch at The Depot prior to Patti's medical appointment. Patti Larson visited Marilynn Kruger last Friday...

It's day 15. The deadline for new bills has passed in both the House and Senate. The current bill total for both the House and Senate comes in at 1,035, nearly a hundred more than last session. Of that total the Senate has introduced 396, or just five more than last session. The committees have been busy hearing and voting on bills, they are especially busy working to get done not just in time for crossover, but because there is a rule that any bill with an appropriation of $50,000 or more must be voted out of its respective committee by...
The 69th Legislative session is well under way. Taking on my new role as Speaker of the House has been quite an experience so far. One thing I have learned is how incredibly important all the staff are to make sure things run smoothly and efficiently. The House introduced 620 bills this session, which is the most since 1991 and 76 more than last session. This will certainly add to the workload to be done within our limit of 80 days. We are seeing a great variety of bills, from naming the State Vegetable (rhubarb) to the number one topic on...
Here’s your weekly rundown of some of the most interesting headlines from newspapers across North Dakota. Flu and COVID-19 are coming on strong Rolette County’s Public Health agency is well into the 2024-25 vaccination season. Rolette County Public Health nurse Renae Henderson said flu cases are on a rapid rise throughout the state, an issue that became obvious during the last week of 2024. “Flu cases doubled in one week from 303 to 607,” said Henderson. “Total cases are just about 2,000 now and...
Some N.D. legislators want to raise the bar on constitutional amendments. A resolution before the N.D. House calls for 60% approval from voters in order to pass any ballot measure that would alter the state’s constitution. This is the most recent proposal from legislators aimed at reining in ballot measures. There were five such measures on the statewide ballot during the 2024 general election, and only two passed. Amy Jacobson of Prairie Action N.D. wrote a scathing editorial for the North D...
In 1936 Bing Crosby entertained the nation by crooning “Pennies From Heaven,” but in 2025 it seems that pennies are The Coin From Hell. It didn’t happen overnight, but inflation has reared its ugly head (inflation really should emphasize its six-pack abs and sculpted calves instead, but what do I know?) and it now costs the U.S. Mint a whopping 3.7 cents to manufacture and distribute each one-cent piece. Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is giving the evil eye to this wa...
President Donald Trump’s Second Inaugural Address ignored the path of reconciliation, magnanimity and unity that distinguished the historic addresses delivered by Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. Instead, Trump took “the road less traveled,” to borrow from Robert Frost, and used his platform, in part, to rehash old grievances and lash out at his predecessor, seated a few steps behind him, minutes after President Joe Biden had welcomed the 47th President and his wife, Melania, to a White House Tea – “Welcome Home” – restoring an old tradit...
The season of Epiphany is a significant part of the Christian liturgical year, marking the period that follows the season (12 days) of Christmas and leads up to Lent, a time of deep reflection and prayer. Epiphany is a time when we concentrate on the idea of revelation, a season where we reflect on the ways Christ has made Himself known to the world and to us. This season begins on January 6th with the feast of the Epiphany and continues through the Sunday before Ash Wednesday. Epiphany comes from the Greek word epiphaneia, meaning “appearance...

Dear Savvy Senior, When should someone with dementia stop driving? My 83-year-old father has some dementia issues but still drives himself around town pretty well. Concerned Daughter Dear Concerned, Most doctors agree that people with moderate to severe dementia should never get behind the wheel, but in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia, driving performance should be the determining factor of when to stop driving, not the disease itself. With that said, it’s also imp...
Have you started planning your garden for this year? I’ve already seen the ads on social media, and the hardware store has their spring bulbs for sale. Seems a bit early to me, but we should be optimistic. Spring will get here. Have you figured out what trees you’re going to plant this year? My wife has been asking for a river birch for a long time, and I keep putting it off. Maybe this is the year we get one and put it in the ground. Most people prefer doing the action, rather than just planning for it. Nevertheless, that’s often how life...
