  • County Commission hears of County Road 16 culvert issues

    Allison Lindgren|Feb 12, 2018

Doug Skadburg and Chris Skadburg informed the commissioners about Oak Creek and culvert problems on County Road 16 at their meeting on February 8. The state water board shows that the culverts are a little lower than the elevation of the spillway, so the water is forced to build up. It’s an assessed drain. As soon as it goes down, they open the gates and the water spreads out and doesn’t go anywhere. The Skadburgs have met with the water board regarding this issue, which they clarified is a dif...

  • 2018 will generate new fights over moral values

    Lloyd Omdahl|Feb 12, 2018

With 81 percent of Americans rating moral values in the U. S. as only fair or poor, it would seem we have consensus that should foster some sort of response. The folks who have an abiding concern over the moral state of society now have a number of supporters in the national administration, giving them hope for breaking the endless spiral downward. They have endured criticism for supporting Donald Trump who, according to Pope Francis, is not a Christian but who has deferred to the wishes of...

  • I'm still cheering for Trump

    Michael Reagan|Feb 12, 2018

Donald Trump sure hit it out of the park Tuesday (Jan. 30) night. Like millions of other people in America who tuned in to the president’s first State of the Union Address, I’m still cheering. I wasn’t in Washington, in Soviet California, or anywhere else in Trump’s America. I was actually on a cruise ship with my wife on the other side of the world in the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia. After I watched Trump’s prime-time TV address live in my cabin on the Celebrity Solstice...

  • On your honor

    Corey Seymour|Feb 12, 2018

First things first: Thanks for your emails—both pro and con. Some of you have written to say thanks for a column that you consider to be an informed (and opinionated) news source—and some of you have written to tell me lay off the President, whom you consider to be an honorable man using his God-given talents to move our country forward and defend our Constitution. Ha! Just kidding with that last part! Even Trump’s fervent supporters don’t think like this—though some of you have expressed...

  • Letter to the Editor - February 12, 2018

    Feb 12, 2018

My husband and I live on a midsized farm in northwestern Minnesota, where we grow corn, soybeans, sugar beets, wheat, and alfalfa. Several of our grown children are farmers too, raising families and teaching them how to be competent, resourceful future farmers. We all rely on good policy that effectively keeps farms operational – especially young farmers who need startup capital and supportive risk-management tools. So every five years, my family does something very important for our farms and communities – we complete the Census of Agr...

  • Sermonette for February 12, 2018

    Reverend Rick Loewen|Feb 12, 2018

In the book of the Gospel of John, chapter 11, verse 35, we read one of the shortest scripture passages in the Bible. "Jesus wept." Why would the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Creator of the heavens and the earth be crying, sobbing His heart out? His good friend, Lazarus, had died. And it hurt Jesus. Remember, Jesus is Divine, yet He was human. Jesus had feelings just like anyone else and because who better to relate to when our heart is breaking and aching inside? Could someone reading this be weeping into the night? Is anyone crying...
