“No one can interfere in my God-given right to guns” is a refrain often heard in the heated rhetoric between weapon owners and regulation advocates. Being that God has been dragged into this cutting issue of American politics, this claim becomes both secular and theological. Every time it is made, Founding Father James Madison rolls over in his habitat. He thinks he created the Second Amendment while God just looked on. To tell the truth, Madison didn’t like the Amendments. Since the Const...
The Wall Street Journal article made me both hungry and wistful. According to The Journal, Aunt Jemima pancake mix, Campbell’s Soup, Kellogg’s cereals and many other “big-food” staples of the ‘70s are in trouble. “High-end consumers are shifting toward fresher items with fewer processed ingredients, while cost-conscious shoppers are buying inexpensive store brands,” reports The Journal. Processed foods were all the rage in the ‘70s. With big families to feed in a down economy, parents were lo...
March is here and although winter seems to be gone, an ice storm or even late blizzard can still hit us. This point is made not to further depress those who are looking forward to spring, merely to caution all from putting away the winter survival equipment. Items you may have at home and at the ready in the event of a power loss should include: a flashlight, spare, charged batteries, candles with matches, at least three gallons of drinking water and at least three days of ready-to-eat foodstuff. Examples of these foodstuffs would be canned...
The nation just witnessed what the OpMedia and the Commentariat like to call "bipartisan legislation." The occasion was the two-year spending-palooza that Curator of the Senate Mitch McConnell and The Boy Ryan passed. It was bipartisan in the sense that country club conservatives let Democrats waste $150 million on social programs, so they could waste an equal amount at the Pentagon Mall. It wasn't a genuine compromise any more than two addicts agreeing to split stolen money between heroin and...
Like many of you, I’m very sad about Billy Graham passing away. Those who are younger will probably not have the familiar connection with him like some of us older folks, but nonetheless, I’m sure his books and recordings will continue having a beneficial impact on future generations. Throughout my childhood, I remember my parents always dialed in our old television set to watch Billy Graham evangelistic crusades and even though as a typical child I thought church services were somewhat boring, I would still sit and listen. In fact, I may not...

Cavileer March 6, 2018 — Today is the birthday of Charles Cavileer, who was born in 1818. He was a saddler by trade, and while living in St. Paul, he was also a druggist, a postal worker and the Territorial Librarian. Cavileer was also adventurous, and in 1851, he brought to Pembina the first permanent group of agricultural settlers to what is now North Dakota. Two years later, he became a U.S. customs inspector and was then appointed postmaster by President Abraham Lincoln. His written accounts of wildlife and fur trading have since become i...

Law enforcement agencies across North Dakota will run extra patrols in an effort to remove impaired drivers off the roads, as part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign from March 1-31. “We want to use the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaign period to remind drivers of how simple it is to always drive sober,” said Jamestown Police Lieutenant Justin Blinsky. “It’s as easy as remaining sober, designating a sober ride in advance, or calling someone when you are impaired.
