  • We the People: The Pentagon Papers case and the right to know

    David Adler|Mar 7, 2022

Thomas Jefferson once observed that fearless, independent newspapers were indispensable to the American experiment, and to "the people's right to know." Without an informed citizenry to scrutinize, question and challenge governmental acts, the great goal of holding government accountable to the citizenry and the rule of law would surely fail. The U.S. Supreme Court embraced Jefferson's premises in its landmark ruling in The New York Times v. Sullivan (1964) by protecting the press from libel...

As I sit safely in the cozy office in my home writing this column, the people of Ukraine are greeting Putin's massive military invasion with incredible defiance and courage. Their president, Volodymyr Zelensky, reportedly rejected an offer to evacuate to safety in the U.S. - despite reports that Putin hired mercenaries to assassinate him. • Living on Purpose: A testimony about a miraculous healing

    Billy Holland|Mar 7, 2022

I want to share a praise report of God healing someone I know personally. We hear about sickness and disease and the endless cries of why, but rarely do we learn about miracles when God intervenes and touches a person with His creative and restoring authority. In the New Testament, there are true accounts of Jesus asking what He can do for those who were suffering, and when they told Him their request, He said, “I will.” As Christians, we pray because we believe God is listening and that He wil...

  • Sermonette: March 7, 2022

    Pastor Jeff Halvorson|Mar 7, 2022

This week begins the portion of the church calendar that separates Christianity from all other religions, Easter. As a prelude, a time for preparation, for nearly all Christian denominations to observe the season of Lent. The season of Lent lasts for 40 days and begins on Ash Wednesday. But if you were to count the actual days on your calendar from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday you would find there are 44 days. The answer to this is that as Sunday is a day of worship, it is not counted as a day of preparation. So, taking the days of this...

The Bulldogs and Comets will no longer be the mascot for Rolla/Rolette. The two will combine to become the North Prairie Cougars, the same as the combined football team. Teams will play each other once in regul...

  • Our Outdoors

    Nick Simonson|Mar 7, 2022

In the dreamsicle light of dusk on the backwater bay, I led a line of young anglers out onto the snow-covered water in hopes that a few willing crappies would fill the couple of hours between our afternoon of sledding and a planned pizza dinner back at the cabin. The line, however, was longer this time as my oldest son and the three kids of two of my wife's friends joined me. Among them was my godson, Gavin, and his younger brother, Lincoln, now three years older than when I had last seen them...

  • The Peluso Report: Love What You Do

    Mike Peluso|Mar 7, 2022

You definitely have to love what you do to be able to endure the pure punishment ice fishing can throw at you. Cold weather, heavy winds, and finicky fish are just part of the equation. Either way, I always try to take everything in stride and if you know me, I'm extremely laid back; if you know me really well, you know I have a pretty long fuse and it takes a...
