The City of New Rockford has collected more than $54,000 in local sales tax revenue from remote sellers in the past two years. That information was revealed in a new report released by North Dakota Tax Commissioner Ryan Rauschenberger last week. The report, found at www.nd.gov/tax/data, shows a comparison of the tax collected by remote sellers in 2019 and 2020 for counties and cities with local sales tax. Counties and cities that impose local sales and use taxes received a combined total of...
The proposal to allow residents to bring the New Year in with a “bang” appears to have been a dud. City Attorney Peterson yet again brought revisions to the fireworks ordinance to the March 1 commission meeting. He said the provision that would allow fireworks to be sold and ignited in city limits from Dec. 26-31 was included in the draft, however he sought direction from the commission before finalizing that and a couple of other key provisions. It didn’t take long for city leaders’ positio...

A successful holiday promotion in Carrington is coming to New Rockford, just in time for Easter! Lioness, an apparel and accessories retailer in downtown Carrington, started offering care packages to residents of Golden Acres Manor last fall. For $20, anyone could purchase a care package for a resident, which was then hand-assembled by owner Hope Carr and delivered to the local nursing home in time for Christmas. Carr has decided to launch a similar program for Lutheran Home of the Good...

One retired teacher is (almost) ready to dance again, now that she has a new knee. Janel Fortney of New Rockford said she didn't want to miss out on special life moments like dancing at her son's wedding and holding her grandbabies. That's why she scheduled her knee replacement now, rather than waiting until later. "I want to feel comfortable carrying my grandchildren," she said. "I want to do more and I want to do it now." Her knee bothered her, not because of injury or trauma, but because of n...
The keyless entry system that former Emergency Manager Jess Earle purchased for the courthouse with grant funds reportedly doesn’t fit the existing door jambs. The issue was identified when new Emergency Manager Lisa Thompson and Commissioner Glenda Collier engaged a contractor to install them. The county reportedly has one month to close out the grant. The contractor said that in order to make the locks fit, new jambs need to be installed, which would be a significant cost to the county. “This...

The House of Representatives completed all their work this past week as they took action on all bills and resolutions before adjourning for crossover. The House started with over five hundred bills. We are disappointed that so many of the citizens of our state were unable to attend the first half of the session, due to the pandemic. However, we are very pleased with the efforts by leadership, in both chambers, as well as the bipartisan Legislative Council to help make the legislature much more accessible by video or even with the use of remote...

Get this: A study by McGill University has found that more money does not necessarily make people in low-income countries happier. I like more money as much as the next guy, but that does not surprise me. People in developing countries like Bangladesh may not have high incomes and own lots of nice material things, but they do have an abundance of two key sources of happiness: More contact with family and nature. McGill’s study backs me up. Sara Minarro, the lead author, says in Futurity.org t...
I was once fired by an employer because they did not like the way that I tweeted. They had no problem with the way that other people at this same enterprise tweeted, they just didn't like my own flavor of rhetorical panache. They never actually came out and said it was the subject matter of my tweeting, or my style, that got me a date with the guillotine. They simply said we told you to stop tweeting, you wouldn't, and so we are letting you go. I'm always fascinated when somebody else gets into...
I’ve had a discussion with Aeronautics Commission Director Kyle Wanner regarding drag racing on airports. We have significant concerns about this type of activity and strongly recommend against it, especially given the current pavement condition at New Rockford’s Tomlinson Field. Jamestown Regional Airport hosted drag races for many years. Unfortunately, due to operational challenges and mounting concerns over safety and potential infrastructure damage, the Federal Aviation Administration is no longer permitting racing events at Jamestown. I s...
Kids these days, they’re so entitled. What a classic line from parents. Actually, I’m pretty sure I’ve even said this, which is funny—because recently I’ve been hit with the conviction that I’m entitled. I live like I have the right to certain comforts. Having recently graduated, I feel like I have the right to a well-paying job, a nice place to live, even to own horses again someday. Are these things I should feel entitled to? Let’s look at Philippians 2:3-8. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others...
The February Trailriders 4-H meeting was held at the Evangelical Free Church on Feb. 21. At the meeting 11 kids were there, but two were on Zoom. We talked about what we are going to do in the next meetings and months. We also talked about what projects we are going to do in the coming couple months. We did two art projects. The older kids did barbed wire, while the younger kids did cookie-in-a-jar. As shown in in the photo at right, the older kids were working with barbed wire, bending the...
