Crossover break is over, and both chambers are back to work. Some committee hearings were held Wednesday morning, while other committees chose to wait until afternoon. Wednesday was the final hearing for SB 2149 in the House Education Committee. This is a constituent driven bill about ways to decrease suicides in young people. Kennedy Gjovik and her family drove t...
The 66th Legislative Assembly was called back to order on Wednesday, Feb. 27 with committee meetings in the morning, a short floor session in the afternoon, and full committee meetings continuing until early evening. We enjoyed the crossover break and the opportunity to visit with many of you, take care of personal matters and start to gather information for the second half. The House dealt with 545 bills and 56 resolutions in the first half of the session, which is up substantially in total numbers from the 2017 session. We defeated 180 of...

In recent years, gift cards have become very popular. Unfortunately, scammers have an interest in gift cards, too. Scammers are using gift cards to pry money from you as a form of payment in their latest con. Scams that seek payment by gift cards take many forms, but often carry a common theme. The scammer may assert that you neglected to pay taxes to the IRS and must pay immediately. Or, the “utility company” calls to inform you that you have failed to pay your bill and now face an immediate cutoff. To fix an urgent problem on your com...

All states in the Union except four, including North Dakota, have annual legislative sessions. But we wait until we have enough business for a session or problems go to Washington to be solved. By the time the biennial crowd hits Bismarck, conflicts have multiplied and the Legislature takes on the appearance of a Roman coliseum in which scores of conflicts run concurrently until the last gladiator falls. In this short space, we can comment on only a couple. The Creeping Marijuana Menace As you...
Part II: Humor is healing. That is why I am taking the time to give my advice to a few high-profile Americans, including our commander in chief— the President of the United States of America. Before I do, I would like to disclose some things about myself. My great-grandfather immigrated from Scotland sometime in the mid-to-late 1800s. My DNA is in the database. I have worked or had odd jobs since I was 10 years old. I’ve worked and driven through almost all the lower 48 states over the past 40 years. I may have stupid comments left in high...
We have now reached the halfway mark of the 66th legislative session. At this time, all bills that have been passed in the House have been moved over to the Senate for further consideration and vice-versa. There is still work to do on many of the bills, and as they continue through the next chamber and conference committees, we will fine-tune them so that by the time the bill is signed we feel confident that we have the best possible product for the people of North Dakota. We will hear the second budget forecast in March, and after the appropri...
When I received an edition of the Transcript several weeks ago, I as well as my wife, Danielle, were deeply moved by the article of two women who are saving dogs lives! We sent a donation to the Cause for Paws to the kennel at Devils Lake, and then received a thank you card from Shelly Hanson. I was surprised to learn that she was a New Rockford native. These ladies deserve a lot of thanks! And I’m sure they need help caring for all the rescued animals. I take my hat off to Colette Byrum and Shelly Hanson. Danielle and Bill Womacks Virginia B...

In 1977, country singer Johnny Paycheck recorded the hit single “Take This Job and Shove It.” The chorus of that song began and ended with these well-known words: “Take this job and shove it, I ain’t working here no more.” Apparently, that song really struck a nerve with people, becoming his best-selling record, with over 2 million copies sold and inspiring a movie with the same title. Attitudes towards our work certainly haven’t changed for the better since then. Americans are growing increasingly unhappy with their jobs. Today, less than h...

Dear Savvy Senior, I will be enrolling in Medicare in a few months, and would like to know how Medicare covers vision services. I currently have vision insurance through my employer but will lose it when I retire. Looking Ahead Dear Looking, Many people approaching 65 are unclear on what Medicare does and doesn’t cover when it comes to vision services. The good news is that original Medicare covers most medical issues like cataract surgery, treatment of eye diseases and medical emergencies. B...
The cold weather that North Dakota has been experiencing has generated its fair share of jokes, complaints and Facebook posts. I’ll admit— I have been one of the complainers, and would love to have a few more days at average March temperatures. However, this winter has also taught me to be careful what I wish for. It seems like every time I think it’s going to warm up, we get high winds or snow. I’m not sure which of those I would rather have. Yes, I sometimes feel a twinge of guilt when I...
Of War and Agriculture by Steve Stark March 12, 2019 — Despite being in the middle of World War II, visitors to the North Dakota Winter Show in Valley City were enjoying the last hours of the sixth annual agricultural get-together on this date in 1943. The final slate of events culminated in the popular livestock show. Top awards were bestowed on the finest Herefords, Shorthorns and Aberdeen Angus that proud North Dakota producers had to offer. On just the previous day, the United States Senate had cleared the way for passage of legislation t...
When the free-wheeling style the New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets have displayed to great success this season suddenly runs into the rough-and-tumble world of elimination basketball, second and third scoring options are often needed to come to the forefront. Six-foot-two senior post Tucker Longnecker provided that and much more in the first game of the Region 4 Boys' Basketball Tournament, scoring 21 points to lead the Rockets to a 56-41 victory over Langdon/Edmore/Munich last Monday night, March...
