In April 1984, I stood looking. We hadn't spoken to each other or breathed the same air, but I knew her. My mom really knew her, and that is how I knew her. Marie was her name and she was tiny. She was only 20 weeks gestation. She laid in her casket, still and silent. She was loved beyond measure, and in her true home, within the arms of Jesus. My mom was shattered, my dad was heartbroken. I was only 15 months old, but I can remember what she looked like and I can remember being at her funeral....
The dry, windy conditions have made our area ripe for fire activity recently, with volunteer firefighters battling large blazes at all hours of the day and night. The worst of the fires have occurred north and east of us, in Benson and Nelson counties. Local officials didn't hesitate to implement burn restrictions in March, as the National Weather Service issued guidance that drought conditions were expected to persist throughout the spring. On March 19, Spirit Lake officials suspended all...

The money on gift cards is like cash – once it’s spent, you almost certainly can’t get it back. That’s why requests for payment by a gift card are typically part of grandparent, tech support, and impostor scams. If you only remember one thing, remember this: if anyone demands that you go purchase a gift card to pay a debt, bill or fee for service, or to help a friend or relative in trouble; it’s a scam. Gift cards have also become one of our favorite ways to mark birthdays and holidays. But be cautious when buying or using gift cards, be...

Five years ago, I nearly lost my life to leukemia because I couldn’t afford my medication. Even though my doctors warned me the cancer would return if I didn’t take the medicine, I did not fill my prescription, because I couldn’t afford the $2,400 a month co-pay. Luckily, I found the same medicine at a more affordable cost of $680 a month through a Canadian pharmacy. My story is shockingly common. Surveys have found that one in three adults did not take a medication as prescribed, because of the price. There have been several high profi...
Tom Wolf, lame-duck governor of Pennsylvania, announced on Twitter that he wanted the commonwealth to legalize pot. His comment was hailed as timely, necessary and courageous by many of his lame-duck followers on social media. There is a huge constituency in Pennsylvania, and nationally, for ending what some call a prohibition, and others view as a common-sense limitation on recreational marijuana. It is important to note that, neither Wolf nor I, are referring to medical cannabis, which has...
In its current form, the U.S. Senate’s delaying tactic called the "filibuster" hangs on a rule requiring 60 votes for "cloture." Simply put, it takes 51 Senators to pass a bill, but before that, it takes the consent of 60 Senators to end debate and actually get to a final majority vote. Each time control of the U.S. Senate changes hands, the new majority party publicly mulls doing away with the filibuster in the name of democracy, while the new minority party staunchly defends the filibuster in the name of minority rights to force due d...

Born Nov. 20, 1941 in New Rockford, N.D. to Arnold & Josephine Bymoen, he was the second of three children. He passed away quietly in his home in Las Vegas on March 5, 2021. He spent his early years on the family farm, where he especially liked driving the tractor and any work that related to that. His first years of school were in a one-room school house, where he was usually one, of only two, students in his grade. The family eventually moved to Sabin, Minnesota, where Darrell attended and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1959. He went...

As of April, I am 15 months, and 26 months, removed from surgery on my right kidney. Long story short, the plumbing out of my kidney was kinked, and my right kidney was filling, but not draining. To have the issue resolved, I needed specialized robotic surgery at Mayo. Specialized surgery which failed the first time and had to be redone. God willing, in May, I’ll get another positive post-op. It’s been a stressful journey, and I really hope I’m done learning about kidneys from the nation’s top nephrologists (kidney doctors), but it got me thin...
If popular culture has taught us anything about the early days of the teenage dating scene, it is that girls were often using an excuse similar to, "I'm busy that night. I'll be washing my hair." To be honest, I never really understood. I was always kind of a wash and go kind of gal. But as we know, life (and style) hasn't always been so simple. The actual process of washing the hair might not have taken that much longer than what you and I are accustomed. The real chore came in styling and dryi...
The Dec. 25, 1903, “Transcript” mentioned the “Portal International” newspaper. That issue carried some school notes: the Primary room students had been holding “secret communications” with Santa Claus. The Intermediate room students held a debate: “Resolved, that rain is better than snow.” The Negative side won. Vada Aultman and Pearl Anderson had gone to their rural homes for Christmas vacation, as had Mary Goodman, on Dec. 21. Albert West had been absent all week. Samuel McDowell was se...
The introduction of H.R. 51, a bill to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state — the “Washington, Douglas Commonwealth” — would grant its 700,000 residents the same rights enjoyed by Americans in every other state — full voting representation in Congress. This historic measure has triggered intense political and partisan controversy because, if enacted, the likely result would be the election of representatives who are Democratic, black and urban in their orientation. Make no pretense about what is at stake for the balance of power on Capitol H...
