While the upgrades currently planned for the 911 dispatch center at Lake Region Law Enforcement Center (LRLEC) are a step in the right direction, more are needed to ensure swift emergency response, according to Director Rob Johnson. We reached out to him after he addressed the Eddy County Commission on April 6 regarding the Genre fire, but he did not respond to our follow-up questions until after the April 12 edition had gone to press. In his written response Friday, Johnson noted that some of...
"When my friends and I got out of high school in Sheyenne, N.D. in 1950, it was decided that we should start a letter and stay in touch," Marjorie (Cudworth) Anderson recalls. Now, nearly 71 years later, four of those classmates and friends continue their letter-writing tradition. The "round robin" letters, as they were named, started with names, addresses and phone numbers. Anderson said she was the first to write a letter, which she sent to Person #2 (she recalls it was Arlyss Faye Borgeson),...

We also completed work on the K-12 funding formula bill, along with the Department of Public Instructio...
The end of the 67th Legislative Session is in sight. We hope to be done sometime the third week in April. We need to save days to vote on the redistricting plan, and to make spending decisions when the next round of federal funding for the pandemic comes to the state. Federal spending guidelines have not been released yet, and we are being told that might not happen until later this year. Leadership is talking about a special session in December to deal with both of those issues. We are limited by the constitution to 80 days, every two years....

You can’t escape politics anywhere now – not even in America’s once great pastime, baseball. A “pastime,” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is “something that amuses and serves to make time pass agreeably.” Boy, did the Pittsburgh Pirates accomplish that for me most of my early life. Pirates radio broadcasts on KDKA were background music throughout Western Pennsylvania, when I grew up in the ‘70s, and baseball was weaved happily and deeply into the fabric our young lives. In the summe...
I read the Fact Sheet for the American Jobs Plan recently released by the White House and found it difficult not to feel depressed by the approach. As advertised, it is bold, but when it comes to spending on infrastructure that boldness lies in its size, not its vision. It reflects the Washington consensus that more roads with more lanes are good, that when we fix bridges we should also expand them, that transit investments should primarily serve auto-based development patterns, and that simply...

The book of Daniel begins with a peculiar story. The best young men of Israel, who had been forcibly taken from their homes, are in Babylon when an edict comes to them. They are to be raised and educated in the palace with the best that Babylon has to offer for three years. At the end of those three years, they are to be tested, and the best of them will join the royal court. Among them is Daniel and his friends. The sticking point of the story comes in when the young men are to be fed. See, the officers of Babylon wanted to feed the young men...
Pictured at right is a light and sheer blouse with intricate lace work. It is one of several similar blouses housed at the Eddy County Museum. Known as the shirtwaist, or sometimes simply a "waist," this blouse was designed much like a man's shirt with a collar and a button-down top. Notable differences in this more feminine design included a series of pleats at the waist (hence the name.) The result was a blooming bust and shoulders and a cinched waist. Shirtwaists were lightweight, breathable...

The concept of the “personal Constitution,” which we introduced in this column last week, is personified in the First Amendment freedoms, particularly in the rights of religious liberty and freedom of expression. The exercise of these liberties summons the most fundamental beliefs that human beings possess. The First Amendment affords protection for the component parts of the human spirit and the freedom of conscience — emotions, beliefs and reason. Nothing in the Constitution is more personal than this protection. Various views and strai...
Dear Savvy Senior, What can you tell me about prediabetes, and how can you know if you have it? My 62-year-old husband, who’s in pretty good shape, was recently diagnosed with prediabetes and didn’t have a clue. Could I have it too? Wondering Spouse Dear Wondering, Underlying today’s growing epidemic of type 2 diabetes is a much larger epidemic called prediabetes, which is when the blood sugar levels are higher than they should be, but not high enough to be called diabetes. The Center for Disea...
