For the weekly papers, the revenue has been drying up with main street. And main street has been drying up because customers have been heading off to shop the stores with more choices and bread is three cents cheaper. For the past 50 years, North Dakota’s newspapers have been retrenching with the changing economy. They have consolidated into local chains so they can...

Did you notice that Thomas Lickona recently adapted a portion of his book “How to Raise Kind Kids” into the online “Time Magazine” article “How to Raise Grateful Kids in An Era of Thankless People”? My own son Gideon is a gentle, cheerful, kindhearted lad; but I set aside the time to read the essay because I realize he is still a work in progress. Even though Gideon has mostly outgrown the “This is the worst day of my life” tantrums, he is still prone to swiping my French fries, neglecting “than...
Dear Editor, I am sending this letter to the various weekly newspapers around the state due to testimony we have received in our interim Government Administration committee. It seems there were major changes made to the EMS grants administered through the North Dakota Department of Health and some rural services are in trouble on account of that change. These grants can potentially change in this coming year, however people need to contact those in charge of the grants if that is going to happen. The situation is so variable across the state,...

Breakthrough When Our Walls Fall by Rev. Randy Hahne Bethel Assembly of God “Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in. Do this for six days’” (Joshua 6:1-3). In context, Joshua was called by God to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land, and along the way there were cities to be conquered—Jericho was one of those cit...
We hear a lot about heroes in this day and age. Accomplished athletes are seen as idols for throwing around a ball along with blockbuster fantasies that portray individuals who can fly and use their incredible super-powers to save the universe. However, in the real world, it’s encouraging to know there are humble and hardly noticed heroes all around us. These selfless individuals have no desire to be praised or even recognized.
