Josh Guler and the loan team at New Rockford's Bank Forward branch brought new meaning to the term "banker's hours" last week. In spite of a short application window and a long learning curve, he and his team members processed local applications for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) on evenings and weekends to ensure that the small businesses they served would not be left out. The PPP is part of the CARES Act, the $2 trillion legislation passed by Congress that aimed to provide financial...

I’m sure many of you are with me when I say that I’d sure like to move forward from this COVID-19 thing. But we’re stuck for now. COVID-19 has changed our lives, leaving us to feel isolated and overly stressed. Even more, we’re afraid of something very real that can’t be seen— a virus. I understand that a lot of people are afraid, but I also understand that fear itself isn’t always a bad thing. A little concern can be useful because it makes you cautious and careful and causes you to take precau...
The Prairie Pothole Water Quality and Wildlife Program is a new funding opportunity available through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). When enrolled, producers are eligible for payment on cropped wetlands, two acres or less in size as identified on the National Wetland Inventory, and with intact hydrology. The payment rate will differ by region. The Prairie Pothole Water Quality and Wildlife Program emerged from a North Dakota concept called the Working Wetlands program. Farmers and conservation leaders worked together to...
The Larson family continued a longstanding family tradition this spring and finished just in time for Earth Day. "Ever since the girls were little, we'd spend time picking up garbage each spring," says Sheyenne resident Patti Larson. The daughters she speaks of, Joanna Larson and Sandra Larson are anything but little anymore. With both out of the house- either in college or building their career, it's hard to find time for tradition. This year, with all the COVID-19 precautions, both girls are...
NR-S alum and current NDSU freshman Teddy Allmaras is back home on the farm and waiting out COVID-19 precautions. He is keeping busy with his online classes, which aren't as difficult in content as they are to keep focus on. "It's hard to focus for more than an hour. Especially when it's nice out," says Allmaras. In an effort to put his energy to good use and effectively "pass" the time, the former Rocket quarterback saw his opportunity in the tree belt surrounding his parents' farmstead west...
The renowned traveling abilities of NDSU Bison football fans may have indirectly helped to provide inspiration for the latest tool to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state. Care19, a new location-tracing mobile phone app created by the inventor of the locally-famous "Bison Tracker," documents users' recent close contacts from city to city should they contract COVID-19, in order to track down the disease's transmission with greater precision. Jackie Schroeder, a Carr...

Dear fellow New Rockford residents, It has been an honor and a privilege serving as city commissioner of New Rockford for the past 12 years. I am committed to maintaining our small-town charm by ensuring the safety and integrity of our neighborhoods, the quality of services and vitality of our businesses. A great deal of work c...
On a recent Saturday afternoon, 86-year-old Uncle Doug shared a bit of family lore about his grandfather (my great-grandfather). When great-grandpa Henry Lee Gipson was four years old, a stranger came knocking on the door. The visitor introduced himself and went inside to conduct his business. As he was leaving, he apologized for using a pseudonym and confided that his real name was Jesse James! (This was when Jesse and brother Frank were living in Nashville, and three or four years before...
The pandemic has turned our world upside down. We work from home. School is cancelled indefinitely. Weddings, graduations, baptisms and all of the other indicia of the normal trajectory of a human life are suspended. This is what it must be like to be in Limbo, that now defunct Catholic state of existence without boundary, but also without God. The anxiety is real, palpable and weighs on all of us. On some, though, the weight is much heavier. There is a little girl who should have had no...

“The Centurion’s Faith” Over the course of his three years of ministry, Jesus interacts with many different people. Obviously, religious leaders, fishermen and his disciples; but also prostitutes, tax collectors and many other people. Some of them had faith in Jesus, some did not. But across the board, only once does he seem surprised by a person’s faith. That person was not a religious leader, or a faithful blue-color fisherman, or even a Jew, but a Roman soldier. A man whose name is not recorded, but rank of centurion is. The story goes th...

The March 13, 1903, “Transcript” responded to the P.M. Mattson letter of March 11 by reprinting a two-line poem about attorneys Michael T. O’Connor and P.M. Mattson, but refused any retraction unless Mattson could convince O’Connor that he had libeled Mattson. The second article referenced by Mattson had dealt with a report that Mattson was suing O’Connor for criminal libel; the “Transcript” did retract a portion of the article, but did so in a satirical manner. As to the Feb. 27 story, the “T...

Dear Savvy Senior, Amid all the troubling coronavirus news, I’ve also read that there are various coronavirus scams going around right now taking advantage of innocent people who are afraid of getting sick or are worried about those that have. What can you tell me about coronavirus scams and what can I do to protect myself? Scared Senior Dear Scared, Unfortunately, coronavirus scams are spreading nearly as fast as the virus itself, and seniors are often the most vulnerable. These con artists a...
At the Eddy County Museum, much of the collections housed in the Branford Depot have to do with railroads. After all, New Rockford grew to serve the passengers who traveled the Empire Builder. The original Empire Builder passenger train was introduced in 1929 under Great Northern Railway and later its successor, the Burlington Northern Railroad. At the time, the 2,211 mile trip between Chicago and Seattle took nearly 60 hours. The travel time was reduced following World War II when Great Northern placed new diesel-powered trains in service....
