  • Residents urged to check conditions before burning

    Transcript staff report|Apr 29, 2019

If the recent weeks have been any indicator of the season, we may be heading into abnormally dry conditions for Eddy County. Emergency Manager Jess Earle encourages residents to check fire conditions prior to burning. Various conditions (including air moisture, recent precipitation, wind speed and direction) all influence current fire danger and the potential for a burn ban to be put in place. If and when an actual ban is triggered, it would encompass all of the county’s incorporated except the City of New Rockford, and would include the b...

  • Just kick the can down the road

    LLoyd Omdahl|Apr 29, 2019

For centuries, philosophers have tried to rationalize the underpinnings of governments. We are supposed to be in some make-believe contract to bond together for mutual security, shared services, negotiating conflict and keeping the peace. Even in the best of years, our society has struggled to bring a diverse people together to perform its assumed role. Because our system of government is complex, political scientists classify it as status quo, a polite term for doing as little as possible....

  • Baseball must end diamond dust-ups

    Peter Funt|Apr 29, 2019

The boys of summer will be boys and it's high time Major League Baseball did something about it. The generally genteel game is increasingly marred by senseless brawling among players and coaches. It seems baseball's age-old codes of honor, rooted in "respect," are colliding with modern performance antics— such as flipping one's bat or staring at the pitcher after hitting a home run. The latest example, involving the Royals and White Sox in Chicago on April 17, played out like this: In the f...

  • Where do y'all wanna go eat?

    Jase Graves|Apr 29, 2019

Life with daughters is full of important questions. What's the best way to provide for their education? How can we ensure that they grow up with a solid moral compass? How can we keep them from dating until my first hip replacement? While finding the answers to these inquiries is vital to the successful rearing of girl children, the most frequent, urgent and fraught question of all in my household revolves around where we are going out to eat next. Some people might consider this a rather trivial decision that can simply be made by the...

  • Sermonette: Miriam

Rev Doug Nemitz, First Lutheran Church|Apr 29, 2019

Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. — Exodus 15:20 God had done some incredible, amazing, mighty deeds to free God’s people from their life of slavery to the Egyptians. And now God had done another mighty deed by opening the Red Sea to the people of Israel— and then entombing Pharaoh’s warriors within it. Freedom was won; a land of promise was ahead. It was an event never to be forgotten. Miriam could not, would not, let the moment go...

    Dr. Billy Holland|Apr 29, 2019

There are certain spiritual laws similar to the natural law of gravity that may be difficult to understand yet they are true and important keys to victorious living. The power of words fall under this category and are an excellent addition of knowledge and wisdom to our spiritual life. We can learn that words are much more than simple communication and when spoken in accordance with God’s desires they actually carry the power to motivate, inspire and change circumstances. Even though the name i...

  • 'Sox make late rally, but fall to rival Cards

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 29, 2019

When central North Dakota athletic bragging rights are on the line, no lead, regardless of how cushy, can be considered sufficient. Carrington could have easily thought they were in the clear with a 9-2 advantage over the SNR Black Sox with just an inning-and-a-half to play last Monday, April 22, but the boys in black and silver had a few things up their polyester-knit sleeves. The 'Sox went through a pair of Cardinal pitchers in the final frames to score a five-spot in the sixth, but it wasn't...

    Erik Gjovik|Apr 29, 2019
