How many of us grew up getting bullied? Or witnessed bullying? Perhaps some of us were even the bullies from time to time. Readers of all ages are likely nodding their heads right now. Bullying isn’t anything new. In fact, up until recently, the predominant culture seemed to suggest bullying was just a normal part of growing up that we all had to deal with. When victims of bullying did speak out, they were often told by adults to “toughen up,” or “stand your ground.” “Don’t let them know you’re afraid” they’d say or, “Oh, they’re just being ki...

He is for you “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose…. What, then shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:28 & 31 This is probably one of my favorite verses in the Bible. It is so assuring to know that God will work all things out in our life for good. In addition, we know that God is not against us, but rather he is for us. All too often, when life happens, we tend to think that God is “pulling the rug right o...
“I got to warn you people that the community is just about bankrupt,” Auditor Orville Jordan warned the Homeland Security Committee as they jockeyed for the warmest metal chair in the house. For the daredevils, the ones with cracked seats were best. “We just got another check from the state for highways,” Holger Danske protested. “We got a real plague of potholes this year and that $39 went in a hurry,” responded Chairperson Ork Dorken. “And most of the potholes are still here,” Holger persiste...

Not too long ago, an anonymous commenter on one of my columns concluded that I took my stance on a particular issue because I “hate conservatives.” A couple of days later, a progressive friend who wanted to warn me about a hateful tweet aimed at a Muslim lobbying day at the Pennsylvania Capitol, jokingly observed that she tried to keep her feed “a happy bubble of the like-minded” but this one had slipped through. These two incidents speak volumes about where we are as a country these days. We’re deeply entrenched in our own worldview...
As I thought about what to write this month, several thoughts ran through my head. I could have written about why our country appears to be so divided on issues such as anti-gun vs. pro-gun, pro-choice vs. pro-life, big government vs. small government. If you mention any of these topics to a room of 50 people of voting age, you will likely find 50 percent taking a stance against the other half. This gave me a light bulb moment for my topic for May: Are you part of the problem or part of the solution? Name a problem, any problem. Let’s say h...

April 30, 2018 — It was April 30, 1952, and oilmen near Tioga were falling behind schedule. “We should have begun drilling by now,” said one, “and here we haven’t even been able to get our rigs in the field.” One might guess the problem was weather or spring flooding, but that April had been among the driest in history. No, the problem was 50 freight cars of equipment arriving from Minneapolis. There simply weren’t enough trucks or qualified drivers for hauling it out to the drilling sites. With the Williston basin considered one of the nation...

Spring has sprung! The Sheyenne New Rockford (SNR) Black Sox began the 2018 high school baseball season Monday, April 23 at Tolna. The Black Sox are a young team, but most of the players have years of playing experience. SNR should be very competitive in Region 3. Carrington and Midkota-Dakota Prairie-Lakota will likely be the teams to beat in Region 3, and both are very well coached. Medina-Pingree-Buchanan and Kidder County are the other Region 3 teams. Elliott Belquist is now in his 13th season as Head Coach for SNR. He is assisted by J...
