Dear Savvy Senior, I have heard that the VA has a benefit that can help veterans and spouses with long-term care costs. We recently had to move my 86-year-old father – who served in the army nearly 60 years ago – into an assisted living facility, and my mom isn’t far behind. Can the VA help? Seeking Aid Dear Seeking, The Veterans Administration does indeed have a little-known, underutilized benefit that can help wartime veterans and their surviving spouses pay for a variety of long-term care...
Some of you may already know this because I have been proclaiming it from the rooftops, but last week, I became a first-time grandma. That makes this Mother’s Day even more special. It’s my first Mother’s Day as a grandma and it is my daughter’s first Mother’s Day since her son was born. Their baby boy was born last Thursday, which just happens to be “paper day” at the Transcript. It is the day that we prepare the paper to go to print. Everyone here will attest to the pull I felt to make it to...

You often hear veteran anglers and biologists refer to the current status of North Dakota’s fisheries as “the good old days.” Of course, that’s a general reference and each individual water is unique. Some are doing better than others and at the moment one of those “better” waters is Lake Sakakawea. North Dakota Game and Fish biologist Dave Fryda assessed the size, structure and abundance of Lake Sakakawea’s walleye in a recent edition of the agency’s webcast, Outdoors Online. Here are’ some...

As Spike Lee's character in the Nike Air Jordan commercial spots from the late 1980's asserted, "It's gotta be the shoes." Bo Belquist dug into his closet to retrieve the magic spikes his uncle Alex used to set the New Rockford standard in the triple jump back in 2004. He laced the golden kicks up at the CNDC Outdoor Track Meet in Rugby last Tuesday, let himself get airborne with a hop, skip and jump, and listened for the event marshal's distance. Forty-three feet, nine and one-quarter inches....
For the first time in a three-year span, Carrington High School played host to a track meet, welcoming 10 teams to the slightly breezy Kiwanis/Lions Meet Saturday, May 4, under cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 50's. The long layoff between events at the Stadium '76 complex was due to construction of the new elementary school in Carrington, which started classes this past fall just a few hundred meters north of the track. Because of the project, the traditional throwing event staging...

In January, Southeast District Judge Cherie Clark affirmed a 2018 decision by Eddy County Water Resource District (ECWRD) to remove the Rosefield dam from Monty Schaefer’s property. Schaefer has since filed a Supreme Court appeal pro se (without legal counsel) solely based on procedural errors he believes were made. However, new evidence obtained by Schaefer appears to establish a consistent record showing that the height of and acres inundated by Rosefield Dam have not “increased” over time,...
