  • Belquist sets CNDC Outdoor records

    Kyrie O'Connor|May 16, 2022

Mother Nature strikes yet again. The New Rockford-Sheyenne varsity and junior high teams were scheduled to attend the 2022 CNDC Outdoor in Fessenden on Tuesday, May 10. But after a few inches of rain fell the night before, the CNDC Outdoor meet had to be relocated to the Geographical Center of North America, also known as Rugby. This slight change didn't affect any of the Rocket athletes though. Multiple NR-S varsity and junior high athletes either placed in the top 10 of their event or set...

  • Pitching duel was highlight of Black Sox defeat

    Nathan Price|May 16, 2022

A late inning defensive breakdown by the Black Sox spoiled a gem from starting pitcher Keaton Cudworth. On Thursday, May 5, the Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox hosted a rematch with the Wolves of Kidder Co./Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter. Having lost to the Wolves via the 10-run mercy rule just over a week prior, no one was quite sure what to expect going into Thursday's rematch, but those in attendance were treated to a competitive game and compelling pitching duel. In their last matchup, the Wolves...

    Kyrie O'Connor|May 16, 2022

The New Rockford-Sheyenne Rockets and the Warwick Warriors traveled some miles these past two track meets, by traveling to Rugby on Thursday, May 5 and then traveling to Carrington on Saturday, May 7. With the weather finally coordinating with the track meets, many athletes from both schools set their personal bests. Some of those athletes even punched their first ticket to the state track meet at the end of May. Let's jump back to Thursday, and start with the Mariya Tate Memorial Track and...

On Saturday, May 7, the Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox traveled to Rugby for a double header with the Rugby Panthers and Velva-Drake/Anamoose Aggies. Up first were the Panthers, who entered Saturday’s double header undefeated, having dominated recent competition. The Black Sox, however, put up a strong fight. SNR starting pitcher Koby Duda started out strong, but allowed two runs in the third and another in the fourth. But the Black Sox offense kept pace, scoring three runs in the third to k...

  • Our Outdoors: Here Comes the Sun(glasses)

    Nick Simonson|May 16, 2022

It's been a long mix of chilly winter and underwhelming spring. Cold temperatures, snow, rain and general nastiness extending into May have built up a longing for the warmth of the later stretch of the season and the start of summer, and maybe with recent changes in the pattern, just possibly, that warmup is coming. With it comes the search for one vital fishing tool that not only reminds me that even in the cloudiest, coldest stretches, the sun is up there and getting stronger and a set of sung...

  • The Peluso Report: Fast Forwarding

    Mike Peluso|May 16, 2022

It is hard to believe the Big Muddy walleye tournament has come and gone already on the Missouri River this spring, but that's probably because we never really had a spring. Lots of major weather events definitely got in the way. I feel good about how things played out. Even though I didn't fish the tournament, I was in tune with what was happening and what took place. For me as a full-time guide this is important. Sometimes when you get stuck in guide mode you can miss out a little. Typically,...

  • As Red River Drops, Catfishing to Pick Up

    Nick Simonson|May 16, 2022

With the drought of 2021 in the rearview mirror for the Red River valley of eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota, following significant spring snows and ample April rains, the challenging conditions which limited angling opportunities for the flow's large catfish late last summer and into fall are also in the past. As the waters of the Red River of the North begin to recede and temperatures rise on that stretch from Grand Forks to the Canadian border, area guide and expert on the water's...
