    Nathan Price|Jun 17, 2024

They say the love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies. Well, this summer local youth are getting introduced to gardening at an early age thanks to grants from North Dakota State University. In May the NDSU Extension Office in Eddy County was awarded a pair of gardening grants worth a combined $1,250, which are now funding garden programs in both Sheyenne and at the NDSU Extension office in New Rockford. One of those grants is designated for youth education, meant to provide...

  • Rock on, and pass the Tylenol

    Jase Graves|Jun 17, 2024

Now that two of my daughters are away at college and the one still at home basically views me as an ATM in an unfashionable neighborhood, I’ve tried to find myself a hobby. Since I’m not interested in activities that involve getting out of bed before noon on a Saturday, that pretty much rules out most manly-type-outdoorsy stuff that would require me to sweat profusely in a tent, clean an animal carcass or have one of my friends pluck a tick from a region of my anatomy that I can’t reach. Instead, with the money we have left after paying for c...

  • Under a historic spotlight and demands for recusal, the Supreme Court should embrace transparency

    David Adler|Jun 17, 2024

Rising concerns about the U.S. Supreme Court’s lack of impartiality amid increasing calls for judicial recusals, reforms and transparency, form a historical backdrop of anxiety as Americans are, once more, bracing themselves for a landmark ruling that will have a direct bearing on the future of our constitutional democracy, the Bill of Rights and the rule of law. In this case, Trump v. United States, the question is whether the president enjoys absolute immunity from criminal prosecution. The Court will render a decision that may determine, a...

  • Sermonette: June 17, 2024

    Jeff Halvorson|Jun 17, 2024

Greetings Brothers and Sisters in Christ. A quick review in case you were unable to read last week's Sermonette. I've changed my style of writing these messages somewhat for this series and will be presenting a review of the four Gospels in our New Testament. Last week we discussed Matthew's Gospel. We talked about that Matthew's intended audience was mainly the Jewish people. His main focus was to assure them that Christ was indeed one of them. Matthew points out that Jesus was born into a Jewish family and raised in accordance with Jewish...

  • History of New Rockford: June 17, 2024

    K.C. Gardner Jr.|Jun 17, 2024

From January 1 to the evening of Jan. 3, 1907, the area was blanketed by the heaviest snow storm in some years. The railroad tracks were blocked until the rotary plow came through on the morning of January 4. Many New Rockford-bound passengers were stranded when trains were stopped in Sheyenne and Carrington; the railroad put them up in hotels. On January 3, Louis Oefstedahl and George Norman came down from Sheyenne on skis; it was Norman’s first experience with skis and probably his last. On t...

  • Savvy Senior: Dreading a colonoscopy? There are alternatives

    Jim Miller|Jun 17, 2024

Dear Savvy Senior, Are there any easier alternatives to a colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer? I just turned 60 and my wife keeps nagging me to get tested, but I hate the idea of drinking that laxative solution and being sedated for the procedure. Squeamish Steven Dear Steven, While a colonoscopy remains the most accurate screening test for detecting colon cancer (94 percent accurate), there are other easier – although less accurate – tests available. But be aware that if the result of one...

    Rachel Brazil|Jun 17, 2024

Eddy County Museum's collection of pioneer histories written in the early 1960s have proved instrumental in developing exhibits in the Stavanger Church. • State Golf

    Erik Gjovik|Jun 17, 2024

The elements were the X-factor when the best golfers and teams in Class B converged at CrossRoads Golf Club in Carrington for two days of abbreviated action Wednesday and Thursday, June 5-6. A three-plus-inch downpour several hours before play was supposed to begin on Tuesday, June 4, postponed the entire first day of golf to Wednesday. The original plan was to play an 18-hole one day event that day, but flooding on the southern portion of the course shortened the round to just nine holes. With...

  • Batter up!

    Nathan Price|Jun 17, 2024

Only days after the Sheyenne-New Rockford Black Sox took on the Class B baseball state tournament, most of the team were back on the diamond for the Legion baseball season. And the Post 30 Black Sox picked up where they left off, getting an impressive comeback win over the Kidder County Wolves on Thursday, June 6 in Steele. The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double and a sacrifice fly. Keaton Cudworth was the starting pitcher for Post 30, but his first in...
