Dr. Sarah Davis spends a lot of time reading, whether it be paperback, Kindle or audiobooks. "I love to immerse myself in fantasy and fiction," she says. In her work as a veterinarian, Davis spends a lot of time on the road too, and about five years ago she dove into a new kind of fiction. The idea to write her own novel came to Davis about five years ago while she was driving. It included a set of identical twins with telepathic capabilities and an injured polar bear cub. Even more, the idea...

It's starting to look a lot like summertime! This past week residents and visitors gathered downtown for a great classic car show, enjoyed live music from DPRCA, and showed up to cheer on the 'Sox at baseball and softball games. This rat rod was one of 70 classics on display Saturday night during the Cities Service Station's classic car show and cruise organized by Ron Lende....
Ron Lende invited area car enthusiasts from the Lake Region Classic Cruisers Car Club to his Cities Service Station in downtown New Rockford. The result was the largest car show New Rockford has seen in years, with nearly 70 cars taking to the streets. When they arrived in town around 5 p.m. Saturday, they entered downtown onto 7th Street, turning from 1st Avenue North. The parade of cars took their time filing in and finding parking spots. It seemed that nearly everyone in attendance found a...
The Dakota Prairie Regional Center for the Arts may be experiencing a brief intermission in terms of their now-canceled summer show. However, that does stop this creative bunch from saying that famous phrase, "The show must go on." Artistic Director Elliott Schwab and Assistant Director Erin Greiner found an wave of inspiration after seeing how the people of Italy would sing from their balconies during the coronavirus quarantine. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to invite the area's vocal...
Onlookers wouldn't even be able to tell that a summer thunderstorm caused damage to the Sheyenne Fire Hall addition just two weeks ago as the walls were being built. Workers didn't let a little setback keep them down. As of Tuesday, the structure was fully enclosed. The roof lines of the new and existing sections were designed to connect. New steel siding will be installed on the entire structure to make the two sections look like one complete building....
Yet another annual event was forced to take a detour last week due to COVID-19. Swing Fore Charity event organizers decided to forego their 14th annual golf tournament and silent auction. Sans golf, the key event was a raffle drawing hosted by the New Rockford Eagles Club on Tuesday, June 16. The event generated $14,000 this year in raffle ticket sales. Swing Fore Charity is chaired by Eric Myhre of Unverferth Manufacturing, Larry Korynta of MacDon and Jason McKee of Degelman Industries. Each...

Great River Energy’s recent announcement that it intends to close Coal Creek generating station is, unquestionably, a blow to North Dakota. As someone who knows many of the people who work at the plant and the associated coal mine, I also find a personal sadness with the situation. GRE’s announcement has spurred much discussion about the future of electricity generation in North Dakota. Judging from some comments in the media and actions by some local governments, there is an emerging, but incorrect narrative: Coal Creek is closing because of...
If you noticed a lot more cash parked in your checking account lately, you're not alone. Americans haven't been saving this much money since the Great Depression, and antiquated Depression-era values such as thrift and duty are making a comeback. But embracing those virtues doesn't mean Americans have become more virtuous. The pandemic and resulting economic catastrophe have upended the how we respond to certain behavioral cues. In these unprecedented times, we're behaving quite predictably....
My father’s mission was to tame the stupidity out of me – a powerful blessing too few children are experiencing now. My dad had his work cut out for him. Over the years, I shattered a picture window with a baseball, accidentally broke neighbors’ lamp posts and once hit a golf ball through a neighbor’s window (I mowed a lot of lawns to pay for the repairs). The high point of my stupidity occurred when I was 10. Too lazy to go upstairs to the kitchen to dispose of an apple core, I tossed it into...
I was mowing in the backyard a couple of weeks ago – better described as haying – when a mourning dove flopped out of the tall grass ahead. At first, I figured it was a mother feigning injury to lead me away from a nest. Any child of the prairie has seen that maneuver. When I made another round with the mower, the bird was still there, dragging it's left wing. He was so weak, I was able to easily pick him up. I know, I know, the experts will tell you to just let nature take its course. Earlier this year I found a hawk with a broken wing and rep...

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” -Psalm 46:10 The Lord has been reminding me of the basics lately. He has been bringing me back to him, his heart and the building blocks of knowing him. Two weeks ago, I wrote about prayer, last week I talked about love, and this week I want to explore the idea of being still. I want to explore what that means and why it’s important in our lives. Last week I had a busy week. I went to Fargo, went camping, had to work and got ready...
On Wednesday, June 10, the Eddy County Fairgrounds hosted the first community-wide testing event for COVID-19 in Eddy County. There were 141 individuals tested that windy afternoon, according to Eddy County Public Health Nurse Danette Schmid, and all test results came back negative. Schmid said other than the struggle with test kits in the wind, the event went very smoothly and successfully. Some people arrived an hour before the testing began at 3 p.m. Foster County Public Health and Lutheran...
Swimming has long been an enjoyable activity during the summer months, but did you know that the swimming pool didn't enter mainstream America until after World War II? So for the majority of human history, swimmers found their fun in swimming holes in nearby rivers and creeks. When Agnes Sullivan donated her swimming suit to the museum, pictured right, she also included a note that read: "The pool was the James River. The city poured sand in the bottom to make the water clearer." An additional...
The May 1, 1903, “Transcript” mentioned the “Litchville Bulletin.” A letter to the paper from Robert Walden indicated he and his family had located in the Westminster District of British Columbia, Canada. J.H. Hohl was in Washington State, but indicated he would return to New Rockford in May. A subscription list was being circulated to pay for a dam on the James River east of town; the cost was estimated to be a couple hundred dollars. T.G. Kellington was the first to donate, $25. Quickly...
The Black Sox looked to take on a promising Jamestown team at Legion Park on Monday, June 15. Throughout this game the 'Sox showed that they're going to be a hard team to beat with a spectacular performance on both sides of the field. The Sox got started off early with three easy strikes in the first inning and a run to get them the lead. After no runs scored in the second, the Sox brought in four runs in the third inning from Bo Belquist, Colter Soderholm, Hunter Thompson and Nathan Holzwarth....
Fresh off their amazing victory against Carrington, the SNR Black Sox looked to build momentum with another win against Cando on Wednesday, June 10. The first inning was pretty even with one run scored on each side. Cando seemed like a good match for our Black Sox…and then the second inning started. After the back and forth first inning, the ‘Sox didn’t hold back as they made three amazing plays and were able to get three outs in quick succession. Once the Sox got ahold of the bat they immed...
