It's a classic love story with an incredibly human dark side. However,...

  • In this patriotic season, is nationalism idolatry?

    LLoyd Omdahl|Jul 1, 2019

“All Nationalism is Idolatry” blared the headline of an opinion paper in California, arguing that “the Christian scriptures contend that all allegiance to the God of love is paramount, and yet all modern (and ancient) nation-states enact a religious pageantry that demands the total allegiance of its citizens.” Of course, this is a serious accusation. In ”Moral Man and Immoral Society,” Reinhold Niebuhr “the selfishness of nations is proverbial. It is therefore probably inevitable that every so...

  • Wind offers new growth for North Dakota

    Chris Kunkle|Jul 1, 2019

We’ve all felt the power of a North Dakota wind, its gale force moving snow drifts over six feet high or offering a cool waft of relief on a hot summer day. As a prairie state, it comes with the territory. But rarely do we realize how abundant and valuable an asset wind truly is as an energy source. The demand for wind power is vast, and its value is growing. Wind energy creates jobs, supports our farmers and ranchers, and generates tax revenue. The Wind Industry of North Dakota (WIND), the state’s coalition of industry members and sup...

  • The real border crisis

    Jul 1, 2019

There is, in fact, a huge crisis at the border— one that demands the attention of every citizen in America. It’s just not the crisis that Trump and Pence and their trusty sidekick, Chief Cheerleader Kevin Cramer, have been trying to get everybody to buy in on. No, there are not record numbers of illegal immigrants sneaking over our southern border to take our jobs (there’s some evidence to suggest they actually help create more jobs), leech off our welfare state (illegal immigrants have zero access to federal benefits programs, and even legal...

  • Living on Purpose: A time to speak and a time to listen

    Dr. Billy Holland|Jul 1, 2019

According to current census calculations, the population of our planet is rapidly approaching 8billion people. Along with this massive number, we know there has never been a time in history when this many individuals occupied the earth at the same time, but we can also agree that we have more philosophies, opinions, and worldviews than ever before. This, in turn, brings us to a point in time where our arguments and conflicts have created a more difficult atmosphere to acknowledge what we...

  • Sermonette- July 1, 2019

Pastor Joe Greiner, Evangelical Free Church|Jul 1, 2019

“He who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding. Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is considered prudent.” Proverbs 17:27-28 This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible; and I’m being completely serious. Quite often in my life, I have assumed the opposite of this proverb. Being a wise person has always been a goal of mine and as I’ve gotten older, I have sought to speak and to be heard as wise. I have noticed that people who are wise say wis...

  • Dakota Datebook: Rodeo in Sanish

    Merry Helm|Jul 1, 2019

July 4, 2019 — When the waters of Lake Sakakawea are down, the former townsite of Sanish sometimes resurfaces. Back in the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, Sanish was the place to be for rodeo fans. A group of enthusiasts held a meeting at the Sanish Fire Hall in April 1947, and their brainchild – the Sanish Rodeo – quickly took shape. By July 3, the newly formed association had constructed a covered grandstand, corrals and chutes. The three-day premiere of the Sanish Rodeo was a hit, with around 8,000 people flocking to the rodeo grounds to watch...
