  • County to put tax increase back on ballot

    Nathan Price|Jul 8, 2024

At the Eddy County Commission meeting on Tuesday, July 2, commissioners discussed the failure of a ballot measure that would have raised taxes for road and bridge purposes. More specifically, the county doesn’t currently have the funding necessary to complete road repairs on County Road 10 – otherwise known as the Brantford Road – and were asking county residents to allow an increase of 20 mills to raise money for the project. The measure failed by a margin of approximately 60-40 percent, and no...

Bonnie went back to Sheyenne while Jan stayed in Minnewaukan to spend the afternoon visiting with Brian and Pam Hill at their summer home there. As the Sheyenne community prepared to host another Independence Day, more scraping, painting, mowing and trimming took place the past week. The last blighted house and a few more scruffy trees came down in Sheyenne, which completed the Rural Workforce Housing Grant expenditures. Dave and Nathan Rue of NCZ...

  • The danger of Christian nationalism

    Cody Schuler, North Dakota Monitor|Jul 8, 2024

The right to practice religion, or no religion at all, is among the most fundamental of the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. As enshrined in the First Amendment, religious freedom includes two complementary protections: the right to religious belief and expression and a guarantee that the government neither prefers religion over non-religion nor favors particular faiths over others. These dual protections are supposed to work hand in hand, allowing religious liberty to thrive and...

  • What's a good age gap for couples?

    Danny Tyree|Jul 8, 2024

A recent news development has left some folks scandalized and others envious. (And still others grumbling, “I don’t need no stinking news developments! I’m too busy getting ready to vote!”) I’m speaking of the revelation that former New England Patriots coaching legend Bill Belichick (age 72) is dating 24-year-old beauty pageant contestant Jordon Hudson. (Please hold your fainting spells or “Attaboy!” outbursts until later.) This (and similar situations, including reports that 49-year-old L...

  • Saving local news: why 94 cents isn't enough

    Teri Finneman|Jul 8, 2024

You likely paid 94 cents for this newspaper. It's not enough. Remember this number: 94 cents. It's the number I'm repeating as I work with your newspaper in the coming months as part of a national experiment to help save local news. That number, 94 cents, is how much it costs you as a subscriber to get this paper every week with your $49 in-state annual subscription. 94 cents. A Twix and a bottle of pop – both machine-produced within seconds – each cost over $2 at a gas station I recently stopped by. Yet this newspaper that took hundreds of hou...

  • Change isn't the enemy. Complacency is.

    Amy Wobbema|Jul 8, 2024

If you read the above column from Teri Finneman, you're probably wondering why I published it in this newspaper. The answer is simple: while the Foster County Independent is the proving ground for saving local news, the New Rockford Transcript needs a reinvention just as much as the Independent does. Change is not the enemy, complacency is. Something needs to change, and this newspaper’s publisher and staff will not be complacent. As the publisher, I am fully invested in keeping this n...

  • Sermonette: Faith and actions

    Pastor Joe Greiner|Jul 8, 2024

Recently, as part of my study at the New Rockford E-Free Church, I took a look at James 2. For those who aren’t familiar with James, this is the chapter where he talks about faith and actions. James’ basic argument is that if a Christian truly has faith in Jesus, it will be obvious in the way they act. It is impossible for a Christian to have saving faith, and not have it be obvious in the way they act. To show this, James makes three arguments to back this up. First, James points out the obvious fact that if we have faith, but don’t actua...

  • Dakota Gardener: A pleasant surprise

    Joe Zeleznik|Jul 8, 2024

I travel a lot throughout North Dakota. It's part of my job. While it's sometimes hard to be away from home so much, I do get to see a lot of the state, enjoying both its natural beauty and the variety of the many small towns. I'm always on the lookout for rare or unique tree species during my travels. Recently, I was in Hettinger, N.D., and saw a newly-planted "MN Strain" redbud tree. I was glad to see the folks in this town trying something new and different. I was also a little worried, as th...

  • Post 30 takes loss to Rattlers, Babe Ruthers strike Thunder at home

    Nathan Price|Jul 8, 2024

The Post 30 Black Sox suffered another setback on Thursday, June 27, this time against the Linton-Ashley-Wishek (LAW) Rattlers at home. Much of the struggle for Post 30 of late has been their defense. In their previous loss against LaMoure Post 19 on June 24, the Sox committed eight errors and allowed two unearned runs, spoiling what was a good pitching outing for Keaton Cudworth. Their very next game against LAW was a similar story: six defensive errors and five unearned runs allowed. Another...
