I sure could use a vacation about now - but I have no plans to take one this summer. That's the breaks for self-employed people like me who do not enjoy paid-vacation benefits. When I do not work, I do not get paid. However, nearly one in four American workers are not taking a summer vacation, either - in part because we're the only advanced economy in the world that doesn't mandate employer-paid vacations for them. This is the time each year when I envy my friends in vacation-rich countries...
Independence Day is my favorite holiday. Since I was little, I have looked forward to the annual mid-summer celebration. I mean, what’s not to love? The weather is warm, the sun is bright, and there’s plenty to do and many people to see. As a girl, I remember going to get firecrackers, smoke bombs and ground blooms from the local fireworks stand. Family barbecues, and the parades in New Rockford, Carrington and Sheyenne were often on the list for the holiday. My aunt Carrie (Schimelfenig) Krause...
The Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in McCulloch v. The case itself addressed three issues of transcendent importance to the future of the...

The blinking line… | there it is… blink blink | | and here I sit… in front of my screen…trying to think of something to write for this sermonette article… and the blink blinks each time I stop typing…seemingly taunting me… I don’t you have anything to day? My answer to the voice in my head? NO! Apparently not! Summer writer’s block is a curse! Maybe I am over thinking this. Maybe the words don’t need to be profoundly new or revolutionary. And just like a flash, something occurs to me… perhaps the blinking line is not a curse, but rather an...
Dear Savvy Senior, A while back I read an article about some online tools that can help people search for lost or forgotten money left behind by their deceased relatives, but I’ve misplaced it. Can you help me with this? My mom, who passed away in January, was always bad about keeping up with her money, so I’m wondering if there was anything she left behind. Searching Son Dear Searching, Forgotten or lost money is actually very common in the United States. According to the National Ass...
The New Rockford Black Sox Babe Ruth team just keeps winning. After walking away victorious from two more games on June 29 and July 5, the New Rockford Black Sox boasted a 8-2 overall record, enough to secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming district tournament. The tournament is typically hosted by the No. 1 seed, however, this year's No. 1 seed is Thompson, and construction surrounding their field has caused tournaments to be relocated. Therefore, the honor of hosting the first round has been...

Whether it's taking my pick of one out of 10,000 lakes on my Independence Day holiday road trip, or floating down the Missouri River back home, the presence of freshwater is a major part of my summer and presumably that of any other boater or angler enjoying the warmer temperatures of the season. Casting for bass, trolling for walleyes or fly fishing for trout and sunfish all require access to a stream, river, or lake and involve access to that water. On top of abundance, that water must be...
