    Patti Clifton|Jul 15, 2024

Many households in the Sheyenne community welcomed families home for the 4th of July celebration. Last week started out wet. It rained Monday evening, so the community garden volunteers didn't meet. Any time is a good time to pull weeds in the cucumber, corn or onion rows. The potatoes have been hilled up and are shading out the weeds. Tomatoes are mulched. Stop by anytime and pick cherries that are plentiful in the Prairie Dawn Orchard. Steve Loe, his daughter Madison and her friend Joe, all of Lincoln, Neb., arrived in Sheyenne on June 30...

  • We the People: July 15, 2024

    David Adler|Jul 15, 2024

The Supreme Court defies its platform in service of an Imperial Presidency For years to come, constitutional scholars and historians will long note the irony of the Supreme Court’s defiance of its own intellectual platform in rendering a decision in Trump v. United States, on the eve of the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, that creates out of whole cloth the dangerous doctrine of executive immunity in service of an Imperial Presidency. The very concept of clothing the American Presidency with protection that placed the English Ki...

  • Time to punch Ticketmaster's ticket

    Peter Roff|Jul 15, 2024

The most critical nexus in the free market is the transactions that occur when willing sellers and interested buyers meet. One does not usually look to the federal government to resolve concerns that the costs of particular goods or services are too high. Sometimes there are exceptions. There is general agreement, for example, that the government can and should act when a company’s control of all or most of a single market allows it to act in ways adverse to the best interests of consumers. Now...

  • Who "runs the country?" We do!

    Thomas Knapp|Jul 15, 2024

"Who runs the country?" I've been hearing variants of that question a lot over the last few weeks, mainly in forms like "given Joe Biden's age and apparent mental decline, can we trust him to run the country for another four years?" For the last eight or nine years, I've also heard it a lot, in slightly different forms, about Donald Trump. I visited Google Trends to find out if I'm just imagining increased frequency of that annoying question. Turns out my perception is correct: After a brief spike in 2004, the phrase "who runs the country"...

  • Sermonette: July 15, 2024

Joe Greiner, Pastor, Evangelical Free Church|Jul 15, 2024

Sometimes, life is hard. Part I of II Sometimes life is hard. Sometimes, life is really really hard. Somedays it’s hard to get out of bed, hard to have joy, hard to have any confidence that the life you’re living is the life God wants you to live. You wake up in the morning, and if you had one wish, it would be to start clean somewhere different. In these times, there are many passages that can give comfort. Famous passages like Psalms, Jesus in Gethsemane or Job. But this week and next week, I want to look instead at Jeremiah, and God’s respo...

    Tom Kalb, NDSU Extension horticulturist|Jul 15, 2024

What's the biggest threat to gardens today in the Dakotas? It is herbicide misuse. Nothing else comes close. Gardeners send me over 1,000 photos of sick plants every summer. The most common photos are of tomato and potato vines that are mysteriously twisted and curled. In many cases, nearby tree leaves are stretched and cupped. These symptoms are caused by herbicide injury. Today's herbicides are much more powerful and persistent than ever. Lawn clippings may be toxic to garden plants. In the...
