Residents of the communities of New Rockford and Sheyenne woke with a start on Sunday, July 8, around 3:30 a.m., as winds at speeds of up to 100 mph whipped through their neighborhoods. The National Weather Service's Bismarck, N.D. office had issued a warning for this severe weather event just minutes before. Many locals ran for the basement of their homes, while others headed for the room in their home where they felt the most safe. Amazingly, some slept through the storm. The ensuing damage...
"After some considerable thought, travel, and investigation, we decided that it is true: 'There is no place like home.'" "We enjoy our Sheyenne home and the small-town setting where 'Everybody knows your name.'" These two statements supplied by Dawn and Bob Boyd and David and Kay Nilson are the essence of why these two couples decided to return to Sheyenne after living in other places for years. Memories of a simpler time have enticed them to carry on their established roots in this quaint commu...

The New Rockford High School class of 1968 celebrated their 50th year reunion July 3 and 4. It started with a limousine ride to Dakota Sun Garden and Winery for a tour and wine sampling. July 4 started with breakfast at Buck-its, which was then followed by the parade. Later that afternoon Dale and Diane Rosenberg hosted a covered wagon ride at the farm. Folks...
Watch out for the resurgence of a long-standing scam that combines fake checks with secret shopping. Here’s how it works. You get a check in the mail with an offer to be a secret shopper. You deposit the check and see the funds in your account a few days later. The bank may even tell you the check has cleared. Now you’re off to the store you’ve been asked to shop at and report back on, often a Walmart. Your first assignment is to test the in-store money transfer service, like Western Union or MoneyGram, by sending some of the money you depos...

There are just two ways to die, fast and gradual. Gradual death has a process to it. If it were happenstance and just happened, it would be a fast death. Gradual death usually occurs either because of old age or disease. With disease, the process begins months before actual death and in old age the process takes years. Most people have never considered what has been written in the above paragraph. Yet everyone will be faced with the experience of death, someone they care about or their own. Throughout most of American society the idea of dying...

From Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary: 1. Asinine: relating to or resembling an ass; 2. marked by inexcusable failure to exercise intelligence or sound judgment. Yes, that’s the word that should be used to describe the proposed constitutional amendment that would ensure only United States citizens could vote in North Dakota. Of course, the North Dakota constitution already provides that only U.S. Citizens can vote, but the sponsors allege that the language in the constitution is ambiguous and...
Maybe a new Utah law will revive the lost art of parents calling their children home for dinner. Utah recently passed the nation’s first “free-range parenting” law to protect parents from prosecution for allowing their children to play in nearby parks, walk to school, go to the store or rumble through a neighborhood creek - without adult supervision. It’s a shame that it now takes passing laws to allow kids to enjoy childhood activities without adult supervision, but we must. We must because...
First things first: I was taken aback when I saw the first pictures of the damage and downed trees from the recent massive windstorm that hit the communities of New Rockford and Sheyenne. Then I saw more pictures and was more freaked out. And then I saw how many people stepped up to volunteer and organize and plan and work their tails off to get things as much back to normal as possible in a very, very short amount of time. It’s been nothing less than spectacular to witness, if only from a...
To the Editor: I want to give many thanks to all for all the help in town for our troubles due to the storm on Sunday, July 8. An extra big thanks goes to all the Otter Tail Power guys for their long hours and hard work. Thanks to New Rockford Fire Department and Community Ambulance crews that were all out walking all the streets early in the morning checking the damage. Still, it is sad that some people who choose to drive around to look at damage, end up being in the way of working crews, trucks, trailers and tractors. Truly, Shirley...
The October 18, 1901, “Transcript” carried some school news: the student from each room whose name appeared at the top of the honor roll the most times would receive a prize at the end of the year from the other students in the room, provided that the name appeared at least five times. The school library rules had been posted. Among them: any book kept over two weeks would incur a fine of ten cents per week or fraction of a week overdue; damaged books must be made good by the borrower; eve...
Dear Savvy Senior, Can my Social Security benefits be garnished if I have some outstanding debts? I just turned 62 and would like to start collecting my retirement benefits, but want to find this out before I apply. Worried Retiree Dear Worried, Whether your Social Security benefits are garnishable or not depends on whom you owe. July 19, 2018 — North Dakota’s history is filled with stories of brave soldiers and warriors. Throughout the spring and early summer of 1918, state newspapers were reporting stories of yet another—Charlie Rogers. Rogers was a Sioux Indian from the Standing Rock Reservation. He entered into duty and served first in the 1st N.D. Regiment, then in the 18th U.S. Infantry. It did not take long for this soldier to prove his bravery. “Indian chases 20 Germans” reported a headline in the New Rockford Transcript on this day in 1918. “Indian goes over t...
